Fun fact: showed this movie to a Chinese foreign exchange student that was staying with my cousins. He laughed at the “surgery” scene with RDJs character trying to become black. I asked him why he was laughing so hard. He pointed out there are bottles of a medicine from china subtly scattered throughout the operating room. I do not remember exactly what it’s for but it’s notorious for causing people’s skin to becoming tanner the more they use it. Ben Stiller really did so much research for this movie hahaha

I never understood why people got so up in arms about RDJ's character. The role is literally making fun of method actors, who take their roles too far. Blackface is only an issue because the person doing it is usually making mockery out of Black people. Conversely, RDJ's character is making fun of the insensitivity of Hollywood screenwriters/directors, and the sellout nature of actors.
All the people who took offense to his character, are just simple minded and clearly didn't get the joke. It's almost like the writers are also making fun of those people too, in a way. TBH, the backlash about his character only started in the last couple years, well over a decade after the movie came out. Back when it came out, everybody understood the joke and found it hilarious.

I thought Ben Stiller was Sly & Cuba Gooding Jr( because of the reference to the film Radio(Simple Jack) RDJ was Russell Crowe, himself & a critique of actors who’ve done blackface from Laurence Olivier in Othello & Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart), Jack Black as Chris Farley was pretty spot on, I thought Brandon T. Jackson was a parody of Ludacris or any other rapper trying to get into acting but R. Kelly makes sense too & I never thought Tom Cruise was supposed to be Harvey Weinstein 🤣🤣🤣🤣

There's no way a movie like this gets made today. People are too sensitive and companies are too scared. In fact, there's a movie called "All Star Weekend" where RDJ plays a Mexican and it's finished, but the studio is too scared to release it. It also stars Jamie Foxx.
Glad you enjoyed this movie! Always fun seeing you revist classics and get a kick out of them.

Btw, I don't remember RDJ's role being controversial, in fact he was nominated for an Oscar for it, it only became controversial recently and it didn't last long because no one paid any attention to it.
The movie was the creation of Ben Stiller, Les is Tom Cruise's idea who read the script and told Stiller that the only thing missing was the studio putting pressure on the production, after that part was written in he wanted to play it and he wanted that specific look. Lance is Lance Bass, a member of a boy band called NSYNC who's actually gay.

It wasn't really that controversial. People really only started talking about it years after and even then it wasn't that big a deal. Most people understood the meaning of RDJ's character and it was funny.

While I understand the thought behind the controversy, even today I think RDJ's blackface in this movie is not something that is worth controversy. People say movies like this can't be made anymore and while I agree I think it is a shame, the Simple Jack stuff aside because that is definitely worth questioning, but the blackface definitely not. I feel that as long as you don't glorify and show that it is a fucked up thing to do then things like that are ok. There is 0 attempt to make what RDJ's character did ok or to justify it, and including Alpa Chino as a a black dude to counter his ignorant method acting is perfect. I think it only becomes a problem when you make it seem like it is ok or don't acknowledge it. I feel you can have comedy like this, the problem is people who see in only black and white and fail to see the shades of grey in between. Another good example if comedy like this that is still going on though is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The characters say and do some fucked shit and it is still ok because we don't glorify it and the gang never gets ahead and usually either wind up back where they started or in a worse situation. Basically showing that you won't get ahead in life acting and doing things like that.
