One year before Ed McMahon died my wife and I were walking through Ceasar's Palace Las Vegas near the Forum Shops. Right in the middle of the floor there was a man sitting alone at a table with some hard back books for sale. I walked up to him and saw that it was Ed McMahon. I was blown away but my wife didn't know who he was. No one else seemed interested in his presence. This gave me a chance to speak with him about his career. Honestly, he was very friendly and seemed somewhat melancholy. I ended up buying one of his books, a self written biography. He had his fair share of personal tragedy. Did you mention that he was a Marine pilot during WWII and flew the famous F4U Corsair in combat in the Pacific?

Near the end of Ed's life --- he went on tv to ask for financial help to keep his house. Somehow he and his wife were broke!!!! Ed was a great talent --- and Johnny was lucky that Ed stayed with him all those years on The Tonight Show. Johnny was a cold fish - no wonder his wives left him.

I believe Carson was an INFJ personality type-they tend to be loners or square pegs. They’re natural introverts who can revert to social extroversion when the need arises.
I miss Carson. Like Steve Allen (and Letterman, Conan and Craig Ferguson), he was a genuine talent. The current late night TV landscape is a wasteland of hacks, political shills and semi-talented phonies who couldn’t hold a candle to him in his prime.

Some saw Ed as just a second banana, but he was the host of Star Search, the co-host of TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes with friend Dick Clark, and the sidekick to Jerry Lewis on the MDA telethon. I always loved Johnny and Ed's joking around together on the tonight show and know they could get my Dad and Granddad both laughing their sides sore.
I also, enjoyed Ed's time on TV Bloopers.
It was good that Ed and Johnny got to spend time together before Johnny passed away. It probably was meant to be that way. The same as it was for my Mom and I to spend time together before she passed. There was things being revealed to me the whole week that Mom would be leaving us, that my Dad never saw or wasn't revealed to him. And, it may have been that way with Ed and Johnny things happened for them to spend time together before Johnny left this world.

I believe Carson to have been the best Late Night host bar none. No excusing his aloof and nasty attitude , but I think there are some reasons for some of that . Again no one should be mean just because they can. For one he was blazing a trail; there were no books on how to do what he did , in fact I don’t know if he ever took a coarse in speech . Many talk show hosts today use the methods and antics he innovated . Some things that contributed to his disagreeable nature were : his mother was as cold as ice to him, he bought her a home gave her free vacations and she just gripped about it. Never seemed to love or respect him, I think he had zero love from her and his dad was merely a robot that mindlessly did everything Carson’s mother told him to do. Carson also desperately wanted to quit the Tonight Show years ( 1980 I believe) before he did but was highly pressured into staying another 12 years or so . From the book I read by his former lawyer it was tremendously stressful for him to get out there every night and deliver. Sometimes in the monologues I used to watch him twitch and do edgy , nervous body language . The failure with his wives , and in friendships must have ate at him. I think his extremely cold disfuctional ice cold upbringing did effect him. But others were raised that way and overcame it , I think leaning on God is the only real way to overcome such a loveless childhood in your formative years. , It ever nags and burns at you on the inside. The rejection is chiseled into your heart . I think it very sad that in the end he died almost completely alone

Well - that sure clears up a lot of questions.
I’ve watched the Carson show throughout the years- and I was so frustrated bc I honestly couldn’t see why Ed Mc Mahon was on the panel, once the guests came in.
I also noticed how people had to stay seated on the panel - even after their interview was over, but not talk- that had to be awkward..
I liked the Carson show, but I sensed Carson was tense.

It's always kind of astonishing that you can have someone who exudes such ease and supreme confidence broadcasting to millions each night yet feels insecure and awkward in actual social situations. Also, apparently, as the years wore on and Carson became hugely influential and a veritable 'kingmaker', he liked public gatherings even less because dealings with people became more and more 'transactional', an attitude which he really detested. If I had people constantly clamouring for a piece of me, I'd be aloof and distant too. @@erichaynes7502 yeah, that's what I thought. I'm pretty sure Johnny avoided Ed towards the end.

Carson _was_ a vicious, horrific & violent mean-drunk.
Jonathan / “Johnny” was also a selfish & self-seeking loner who was prone to rampant paranoia & blacked-out bouts of creepy “Peeping Tom”-related activities. A ‘comedic tv genius’ or not, this man was dangerous & sick as all get out.

He should've been in a pscyhiatric ward for the trouble he caused.
