Johnny Carson was The Greatest in my opinion of All the Late Nites Then & Now. (Definitely now)!! I can’t say I blame him for a single one of this group. A bit surprised by Ole Blue Eyes but I’m sure Dino & the “Gang” smoothed it over. The rest of em-Sandra Bernhardt Sinead (?) & of course Howard Stern are just plain Nasty & in my opinion, taking up good Air I could be breathin. Then the Egos of Sly Stone Chevy Chase & Probably even Bob Hope were likely a bit Large for comfort. Then there’s Miss Joan Rivers who was just a flat out Back Stabber although I did like her what she did to Johnny was unnecessary & it seems it came back to Bite her anyway. Well that’s my 2 cents. Enjoyed the video!!✌️
If I'm not mistaken, Carson banned the Youngbloods (not exactly celebrities), before his show aired. It had something to do with their not being happy with the setup of their equipment. Carson axed them and then excoriated them in his telling the audience why they were not going to appear.
Don't professional musicians know best how their equipment needs to be set up? Why argue with them about it? Was Johnny an expert on the matter? Sounds like his attitude was "My way or the highway." Just because one is the host doesn't mean he knows everything, nor does it give him the right to dictate such matters. The following wasn't Johnny Carson's show -- the following was a rehearsal for a show in which I was going to participate at our county fair, which was to present new talent: I was a victim of a so-called "back-up" band our local songwriters guild had hired to accompany our performances. The all-male band members kept trying to tell me I couldn't play my own guitar, simply because it was acoustic. Ever hear of an acoustic pick-up to plug into an amplifier? Or of miking the sound hole? There are ways to amplify an acoustic guitar, and to be discriminated against simply because my instrument wasn't electric was grossly unfair. I decided to ditch the "back-up" band, whose members were more interested in bullying me and other guild members (nearly all female) than backing us up, and I performed my original song solo. The audience at the fair loved it, so I won in the end.
* Yet some of those bans were indeed not justified. When he kidded Zsa Zsa about her many marriages he banned her after she jokingly replied about Johnny's numerous wives and she was banned. Despite his nice midwestern boy persona Johnny was not a nice guy at times. 😉
Well if Johnny would have hung around with Sinatra and his "entourage", then he would have nothing to fear. Don Rickles was very well protected and had no fear of Frank. It's been said the "Lucky Luciano" watched over Frank and the Sintra family during Sinatra Sr.'s early years in New York City.
The Rule: Who functions as a subject, while whom functions as an object. Use who when the word is performing the action. Use whom when it is receiving the action. Examples: People who ban Johnny Carson [people are performing the action, so use "people who"] --- People whom Johnny Carson banned [people are receiving the action, so use whom].....
You missed Rich Little. Johnny banned him because Rich used to do the same schtick every time he came on the show, and Johnny got tired of it. Little wouldn't change his act, so Johnny banned him.
I heard Rich talk about this on Larry King's radio show, but he said at the time he never could get an answer out of Johnny or Fred De Corveda as to why he was dropped. Rich said he "might've said something [Johnny didn't like], or maybe it's that Johnny likes to do Reagan," so he might not have wanted somebody coming on the show and doing a better impression. But Rich was really hurt by it.
@@gallery7596 I don't understand why these hosts who ban certain guests can't just give them straight answers as to why. What are they trying to hide? Just tell the ex-guest why, and offer him or her a chance to apologize and avoid the same mistake(s). Only an arrogant ass stonewalls legitimate questions.
* Yet Bob Hope was a living legend so NBC wanted Carson to allow him to pop in as a guest but years later when Bob was aging into senility NBC eventually told him to move to another network when his specials were no longer must-see TV!
@@WytZox1 His impression of Carson was great, but it may have also been easy for him. Little's vocal patterns and mannerisms were very close to Carson's.
I have no idea why Hope is on this list. However, there is something I find confusing about his relationship with Carson. Johnny confided to friends that he was always exasperated with Bob, because he says he couldn't get him to engage in a normal conversation. He said he would ask Bob about some place he'd been, or whatever, and Bob would just say "Isn't that wild?", and continue with his prepared text. Yet, I've seen a video where he and Johnny, and the other panel guests, were having a real conversation. So, I don't know....
Dick Shawn. The guy who played the actor who played Hitler in "The Producers." I saw him on the Tonight Show once as a guest. The interview got so out of hand - he was a bit of a nut-job - that by the end, he'd flipped Johnny's desk over, had Johnny and Ed pretending to row it like a boat, and stood in the prow like George Washington crossing the Delaware. The audience went nuts. The show went to commercial. When it returned, he was gone, and I don't think he ever returned.
Yes, having standards in a professional and personal life may seem like a "bad temper" but is it really? And some people you just don't get along with. This list is miniscule compared to the thousands of guests Johnny had. And the thing is he gave every single one a shot - sometimes many as with Rivers. But no one could ever be classified as Carson's enemy.
Carson was unwavering and funny throughout his entire career. Contrast that with Letterman, who burned-out and became an angry old man, or Fallon the town drunkard, or Kimmel a leftist tool who hasn't had an original thought since the Man Show.
The funny part about the bans are , not not surprised by any of them. Most of them you wouldnt wecome to your own house .I always liked Bob Hope but he always made the Grand exit . And if youre going to bate us will Mandel and little , say something about them .
Charlie Callas was banned. During his interview as a gag he pushed Johnny so hard he almost flipped backward out of his chair. Johnny was stunned and offended. Thereafter, Callas was only allowed on when there was a guest host. One night while Johnny was on vacation Joan Rivers had Callas on. He did a funny bit on drums doing his signature sound effects. The following week when Johnny returned from vacation he had his regular drummer, Ed Shaughnessy, do an identical bit making sound effects like Callas. Johnny didn't acknowledge that Callas had done the same thing the week earlier. I saw both shows and for years wondered about those two shows and Callus's performance not being acknowledged by Johnny. I later learned of the incident when Callas pushed Johnny. The snub was clearly meant to disrespect Callas.
SM-bm6jo. When Eddie Murphy was a new comedian, he came on the Tonight Show and was extremely and notably disrespectful toward Carson. I don’t know whether he was ever asked back.
Joan Rivers was more woman then Johnny could handle. And why would she tell Johnny about her new show before it was announced? She was lead to believe she would take over the Tonight Show but a man was given the job. I thought Joan Rivers was a “tell it like it is” opinions.
Chevy Chase was never a direct competitor with Johnny he retired in 1992 the Chevy Chase show did not start until 1993 so there's no way he could have been banned for that reason
Carson dealt with the BIGGEST EGOS ON THE PLANET, and never put his foot in his mouth. Julio Iglesias HAD to be the biggest narcissist of all time, and Johnny got through it!
* Johnny jopked about Wayne's sexuality but never allowed Wayne on as a guest. Yet despite his little boy voice Wayne was quite the stud-muffin with female fans and was not gay so he was angered by Carson's libelous jokes & angrily confronted him. ☺
If Howard Stern and was on Johnny Carson’s show today, he would be kissing Johnny Carson’s ass the entire interview. PS. I know Johnny Carson has passed away.
I've learned it's like my a**ho** mechanic. He does a good job but he can be a real jerk so I separate the two. Sucks to have to do that but that's life for ya. Same with some celebrities.

On the show he had one side that viewer's saw and loved. Off the show was the other side. Jekyll and Hyde!!! I enjoyed his show.
This works in reverse, too. After Johnny did a send-up of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, dressed up in a way that lampooned Maharishi's media image, Maharishi wouldn't appear on "The Tonight Show."
Are you by any chance talkin about the turbon Johnny wore in a skit he did every night where he answered questions “from the great beyond “- it was a comedy thing
Sly Stallone was a surprise. He's a very easy going guy in real life.
Sounds as though Johnny had some "quirks" the media audience knew nothing about...Joan Rivers and he seemed to get along so well, at least thats what was portrayed to us viewers as we watched the show featuring Joan as Johnny's guest. Guess we really never know what's going on in the celebrity world.
The problems between Joan and Johnny did not exist at the time she was still invited to the show as Johnny's guest. Joan was working on getting her own show and never did mention that to Johnny until it became public. This was part of this very video narrative. Perhaps you weren't paying attention to the detail. Therefore, I am banning you for not paying attention and for your lack of comprehension skills; as displayed in your comment. No more show for you. As God is my witness, you'll never work in this industry again. lol
@@bachfan7537 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Elliot Gould was banned because he dominated the show which didn't sit well with Johnny
Well, he really couldn't ban Bob Hope ( Mr. NBC) . If there was a man with more clout than Johnny it was Bob.
You're right. At NBC Bob Hope was the top dog.
Bob Hope was boring and NOT funny at all
@@shadrach6299 Well in the depression even RCA the parent of NBC radio ( no tv then) issued stock to Bob and paid him less. By the 1980's Bob was the richest entertainer in the world. In money magazine he was estimated to have 600,000,000 dollars worth. In 1985 dollars. He had a lot of RCA and Texaco. The latter lost him a chunk.
But he could afford a chunk.
@gartwilliams3347: Right you are. When he was on years ago I didn't notice but recently watching reruns of old shows, during the monologue he would refer to "Last Nights Audience", quite frequently. He usually referenced about how unruly and ill - mannered they were.
Oh well, none of us is perfect.
When I catch this persons vlog, I was sucked in on first couple of his it's all a bait and switch so whatever he puts on there to catch you don't buy into it with all the censorship with RUclips you think they'll be after this fool
Jones Rivers WON on The apprentice with Pres Trump's show, I wouldn't have a chance
Does anyone know the title of a post-humous biography written about Carson by his lawyer?
"Johnny Carson" by Henry Bushkin.
@@user-vg2eg7oo5n Thank you!
If I'm not mistaken, Carson banned the Youngbloods (not exactly celebrities), before his show aired. It had something to do with their not being happy with the setup of their equipment. Carson axed them and then excoriated them in his telling the audience why they were not going to appear.
I remember that, though I didn't catch the name of the band.
Don't professional musicians know best how their equipment needs to be set up? Why argue with them about it? Was Johnny an expert on the matter? Sounds like his attitude was "My way or the highway." Just because one is the host doesn't mean he knows everything, nor does it give him the right to dictate such matters.
The following wasn't Johnny Carson's show -- the following was a rehearsal for a show in which I was going to participate at our county fair, which was to present new talent:
I was a victim of a so-called "back-up" band our local songwriters guild had hired to accompany our performances.
@@jrnfw4060 Very nice outcome, indeed. 👍
Wasn't Charles Grodin banned?
* Yet some of those bans were indeed not justified. When he kidded Zsa Zsa about her many marriages he banned her after she jokingly replied about Johnny's numerous wives and she was banned. Despite his nice midwestern boy persona Johnny was not a nice guy at times. 😉
Kudos to her for calling him out. Perhaps she should've defied the ban and crash the show, risking security.
Isn't he dead and cremated? Why not just list those who were banned and not talk about his issues as if he was still alive. Enough is enough.
He knew his show and market, leading to logical my way or highway dealings with people using his platform for their own success
Stallone calling Johnny “Opra” is what got him banned.
What would johnny have done if the "banned" guests crashed his show?
None of the people are surprising to hear about.
Bob Hope. Of course, as much as I enjoy his routines, Hope was a total d-bag and he would have done the same to Johnny!
* Yet Bob Hope was a living legend so NBC wanted Carson to allow him to pop in as a guest but years later when Bob was aging into senility NBC eventually told him to move to another network when his specials were no longer must-see TV!
You omitted Lola Falana and Wayne Newton.
I remember the night Rich Little went too far. I remember so many of these shows.
* Once as a guest host Rich Little brilliantly did the opening monologue as Johnny! 😃
@@WytZox1 His impression of Carson was great, but it may have also been easy for him. Little's vocal patterns and mannerisms were very close to Carson's.
I don’t remember that episode. Can you tell me a little about it? I would like to see if I can find it.
@@4KindnessGal unfortunately you would need to research the shows that had Rich Little on them. He was a frequent guest for awhile.
@@missjody5803 I kind of figured that much. I was looking for a few details. But thanks for the advice. 🙂
I heard somewhere that Johnny didn't want Rodney Dangerfield on his show then invited him after he heard some of his jokes.
I believe Rodney first apologized to him at a dinner or party. If a rough memory serves, I think he stole one of his jokes.
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info! What other types of video would you like to see?
People loved Johnny, the guy on the show. In reality he was a real mean, vindictive guy
THE SLY BANNING WAS A SURPRISE, AND THE BLUE EYES PROBLEM.
You got it wrong. Joan Rivers DID inform Carson ahead of time. Carson lied about that fact.
I think Johnny and Joan got it on.
Bob Hope is so funny
Johnny was great no question
Carson was unwavering and funny throughout his entire career. Contrast that with Letterman, who burned-out and became an angry old man, or Fallon the town drunkard, or Kimmel a leftist tool who hasn't had an original thought since the Man Show.
Sorry. David Letterman was phenomenal. Johnny Carson was a douchebag.
That is a very accurate assessment, in fact, spot on.
I thought it was interesting about Frank Sinatra and Chevy Chase. F.Y.I., I think Dean Martin was a great and welcome guest on the Tonight Show.
Howard Stern, not a very subtle sort of guy.
I was never a big fan, but I do miss him and the show.
Johnny banned Johnny Carson.
That was the conclusion I reached.
@@JustAboutAnything66: Ha ha!
Pm
Didn't know that. Callas was a HOOT! Loved him, but hey, it's Johnny's show. Have to be careful I guess.
SM-bm6jo. When Eddie Murphy was a new comedian, he came on the Tonight Show and was extremely and notably disrespectful toward Carson. I don’t know whether he was ever asked back.
Also Lynda Carter after 2nd appearance, tried to act out a punch, JC didn't like it
Joan Rivers was more woman then Johnny could handle. And why would she tell Johnny about her new show before it was announced? She was lead to believe she would take over the Tonight Show but a man was given the job. I thought Joan Rivers was a “tell it like it is” opinions.
This was cobbled together without knowing anything about Carson--including clips of Joey Bishop, not Carson.
I believe Lola Falana was banned as well.
It would've been funny to see the banned guests crash his show.
What about Wayne Newton and the lawsuit?
* Johnny jopked about Wayne's sexuality but never allowed Wayne on as a guest. Yet despite his little boy voice Wayne was quite the stud-muffin with female fans and was not gay so he was angered by Carson's libelous jokes & angrily confronted him. ☺
Newton not gay candel lite club Roanoke va my cousin she appeared there with Newton knew him he went on to vegas

You failed to mention his ALCOHOLISM, which contributed to his personal problems. And he was terrified of Frank Sinatra.
Carson also disagreed politically with Bob Hope, a noted reactionary.
If Howard Stern and was on Johnny Carson’s show today, he would be kissing Johnny Carson’s ass the entire interview.
PS. I know Johnny Carson has passed away.
I would have banned then too.
Interesting, thanks for sharing your thoughts. What is your favorite episode of the show?
@@FactsVerse You're welcome...
Hard to say, there were many good Johnny Carson episodes.
He banned Barbra Streisand; too, after she cancelled on him.
