    But what I love most of all about this clip Is the way Ella makes mincemeat of that stupid interviewer. That horrific woman was looking down on Ella and asking the most patronising questions. But Ella demonstrated pure class and made that woman look like what she is.

    She was always shy, but nevertheless fought for what she believed in. I think it's a wonderful thing that she's held in such high esteem as a musician, because she truly is one of the best, but it's a shame she's not better remembered for the way she impacted society.

    • @thudson99
      @thudson99 4 года назад +2

      I don’t feel she was shy. To me it felt more like she had to stay within the boundaries of that time period. Because she was a woman and she was black. Not much has changed.

      Thank god she was so called shy. Sick of hearing people state when someone is quiet or shy like theres something wrong with them. What about extroverts loud arrogant noisy etc complain about them!!!

    I've read many biographies on Ella Fitzgerald and she strove tirelessly and consistently for civil rights in her capacity as a singer. she always insisted on integrated seating at a time when racism in the US was enshrined in law. Ella had it rough....bigtime. She was an orphan, then she was in a black persons reformatory institution from which she escaped, then she was living on the streets singing on street corners. THEN......she became the greatest singer the world has ever known. And she conducted herself with the most incredible poise and dignity, as we see in this clip; devastatingly effective, yet totally understated and quiet and humble about her achievements.
    Yet, she achieved great things for civil rights and did it with the sound of her voice. There are RUclips clips from the 50s of Ella performing to mixed audiences, not just racially mixed but also she closed the class-divide in her fan base.
    This world so desperately need Ella Fitzgerald to come back and show us the way.

    Imagine being the First Lady of Song, and this happens to you. Despicable. I saw Ella Fitzgerald's exhibit at the Smithsonian. It was only a tiny room, but her dress and shoes and Grammys were there. And how I love her, and to me she is an American icon.

    I love Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, but I do wish they had been more vocal about civil rights and gotten more involved in the movement during the 60's; Nevertheless, they were great entertainers and a positive representation of black people.

    • @RodrickColbert
      @RodrickColbert 6 лет назад +8

      Unfortunately, big-name black artists who spoke out about civil rights were branded a communist and lost their career, no matter their talent...Jospehine Baker and Paul Robeson were cases in point. They were supposed to just shut up and sing.

    Just to give some context, this is a clip from a CBC TV show called Front Page Challenge, much like "What's my Line" in the US. A panel is blindfolded and has to ask questions to determine who is the "mystery guest" who has been in the headlines. They then have a few minutes to ask a question or two, so this was by no means a prepared interview. I am also sure that this was well before 1970, judging by the black and white, and the apparent age of Ella Fitzgerald. The incident in question happened in 1957 I believe, and such incidents were unfortunately not uncommon in the US at that time. So yes, it was awkward and a little bit patronizing sounding, and it probably was very courageous of her to sue, but looking at this by today's standards is just not relevant. Fortunately we have made enormous progress since that time.
