  • In this interview from 1974, Ella Fitzgerald talks about her songs, scat singing, making movies such as the 1958 film St. Louis Blues and the 1960 film Let No Man Write My Epitaph, band leader Chick Webb, Duke Ellington as a secret playwright, her first experience singing on stage, writing a song for Martin Luther King Jr and collecting cookbooks and shoes.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
With 20,000 hours of music footage spanning 90 years and thousands of hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion and Sports, Reelin’ In The Years Productions is now the World’s Premier Source For Footage Of Musical Artists, Entertainers & History Makers.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

You gotta understand Ella was a very very private person and rarely gave interviews. Her whole body language looked a little uncomfertable to me, and I thought he was realy respectful and tried his best to break the ice. She came across so adorable though, (like always).

@@edmund114 I think what it is, is that he is a real jazz fan (meaning) he knew alot about her and other jazz musicians. I found it interesting that he knew about Duke Ellington's secret passion for writing plays, (not alot of people knew that), which ses to me that he valued these musicians very much and took a real interest in their lives. He was a fan basically, which is very rare for a person in a position of being an interviewer for TV. Just my thoughts on it.

Ella is such a private person the interviewer definitely was extremely knowledgeable and a fan of Ella and knew exactly when to back off from asking to many personal question and I was so surprised how open she was involved in the interview. You can see in Ella body language that she is nervous. Thank You very much who ever downloaded this remarkable interview of a musical ICON.

I always thought this interviewer was awkward. He sometimes asks strange questions and his interviews feel like they are being done in a library where everyone's careful not to bother the people reading nearby. Ultimately, they always have great content, the people he talks to reveal interesting things about themselves, but I'd be sleeping within 5 minutes if it weren't for them.
