I purchased an after-market carb on eBay for my Westinghouse WH7000EC because the old carb was leaking gas. The old carb was not surging it ran fine. The new carb is surging, I watched your video and did everything you did, drained old gas, and installed new fresh gas 93 octane. Took the plastic screw and its 2 mating plastic parts out, used a wire carb brush, and flushed the carb with carb cleaner. I reinstalled everything only to find the surging did not get corrected. What do you suggest I do next?

You can turn the idle screw "IN" before you remove it counting the turns it takes to seat it. Then after reinstalling it turn it all the way in till it seats then open it the same amount of turns it took to seat it before you removed it and it should be almost exactly where it was. Thanks for the video.

In my case. Surging Honda GX 390 on a generator was surging only under 1/2 tank of gas. Tried solving it with new or even no gas cap, new fuel hoses, fuel filter, petcock, flushed gas tank, new Genuine Honda carb and even used aviation fuel. Still it would starve out near 1/4 tank and would only run while spraying starting fluid in the carb.
Surging = Fuel Starvation, especially with less than half tank of fuel in my case, even when it was new. A generator runs at high speeds all the time requiring the highest of volume of fuel in the line at all times.
Generators are designed to be low profile and an inherent flaw is that the fuel tank is (TOO LOW) just slightly above the carb fuel inlet for gravity feed through a hose. At high speeds and especially with little fuel in the tank causes a weak flow to the fuel inlet causing starvation/surging.
    MY SOLUTION:
I discovered that by raising the entire fuel tank by 8" gave me MUCH better fuel flow down to the carb and the surging went away even with almost no fuel left in the tank. You can definitely see the difference (before and after) with a see-thru clear fuel filter which should always be at least 1/2 full during operation on a high speed motor/generator.
Another mistake I made was storing Ethanol fuel for more than one season in my shed. The stuff goes bad and causes havoc on small engines. Periodically check the color of the stored fuel in a glass jar. It should be clear. If it is golden/urine colored, DONT USE IT in a small engine.. Car engines don't seem to have a problem with the aged fuel. I had about 20 gallons of yellow colored fuel and added a few gallons at a time to an almost full tank of gas in my car and it burned it with no problem.
I hope this helps somebody as I almost gave up and it cost me $ and lots of time, but I won and learned a valuable lesson that nobody ever suggested to try.

I had the same problem with a lawnmower with bad gas. I got to get one of those pumps since it's a good price. Seems like those jets get clogged up fast even on mowers. I got to do that with my tractor cause it surges a little. Oh that sounds good. Thanks to you and your videos I am confident to take the carb apart. Thank you Andrew.

@repairGang: If your generator does not have the auto idle, sometimes called economy mode, then turning the “idle” screw will have no effect on idle adjustment. It didn’t look like your generator has the auto idle feature, but I may be wrong as I couldn’t see the whole front panel. The screw you were turning, on a non auto idle is to hold the jet (the small black tube you were cleaning) in the carburetor.

Make sure your generator has an in-line fuel filter in the hose between the tank and carb. If not you can probably get one at Lowes or Home Depot. They're usually easy to install. Because the carburetor jets are so small, they clog up easily so having the gas filtered can save a lot of work. Most manufacturers don't include a gasoline filter. Why? Maybe they'll save .25 cents and make more money on service work?

I've often seen the surging due to water in the fuel bowl temporarily shutting off fuel flow into the main jet. Remove the bottom fuel bowl center screw, drop the bowl, clean-out the bowl and reassemble. Lucas Ethanol gasoline treatment works great, green bottle/color, add to regular gas. Nice job on the video, quick and to the point.

For anyone who found theirselves in the situation, if you intend to store it for "next time" be sure to run fuel with Stabil added for a few minutes, then empty the tank, run it untjl it stalls, then drain the float bowl. Lastly after the engine cools remove the spark plug, squirt a tablespoon or so of 2 stroke oil in the cylinder, crank a bit, then replace the plug. Now when you try to get it going next time, it should work.

I've had a backup generator since the hurricanes of 2004 tried to move my FL home to Kansas. I've had to rely on it only twice since, but every year before hurricane season begins, I fill several gas cans, adding some Stabilizer and Marvel Mystery oil to the cans. I use "only" non-ethanol fuel. I'll put about a quart of fuel in the "empty" tank and run it until the engine quits, never leaving fuel in the tank. After nearly 20 years of mostly garage storage, it will start on 1-2 pulls every time. Any fuel not used by the end of hurricane season is emptied into my vehicles. No problems whatsoever.

That screw you took out is your JET SET SCREW. Unless you have an inverter generatot, this screw sets your rpm of your engine. The rpm speed of the engine determines the cycles per second (hertz or frequency) of your generator head. In the US we have 60 hz, Europe is 50 hz. If you do not have a frequency meter you should start by turning this screw in all the way while counting the turns to get back to a ball rpm speed when you reinstall it.

I've got the 7500/9500 with 2900 hrs on it lol, dont know their lifespan, on 2nd set of brushes, "fuel pump" is out so i just gravity feed it, its been little rough lately, i shall do this! Most small carbs do that crap cause cheap gas with ethanol. They wanted me to take it, all 200+lbs of it to idk...been a mechanic 40yrs. One review guy said he got parts under warranty, ill see.

I always use a set of hair bits and drill the main jets out. Especially on Briggs and Stratton engines. They are almost always undersized and surge. Most older generators don't have that pilot jet setup and you have to remove the bowl to properly clean it.

I have the very same issue with My RYOBI 6500 Generator. Surging / Rough operating. I never realized that when I got it 3 years ago (acquired in a scramble at Home Depot after losing power for days from Eiasis Storm in NY 8/2020) that the gas I purchased should be Satbilized [Stab-Il]. I should have read the manual more thorughly. As soon as I got it up and running for about an hour, the pwer came on!! I have test run it only periodically since. When electric went out the other day, the generator started up with difficulty ( a lot of pulls) and ran with a surging. THX for this video. I will clean the carb as described and hope that does it!! BTW, that battery operated pump / Siphon does NOT get all the gas out of the tank. it leaves a remnant as he siphon cannot suck up from about 1/4 " from the bottom.

Just did what was described ... Had to do it 2X, I did have a thin wire brush ,but used a very small metal wire. That seemed to do the Trick. Learned my lesson about using Old Gas. I had no idea. I do now. Bought STAB-IL for the new gas I purchased. Do I add STAB-IL to the Generators gas tank? or just to the gas in the storage conatainer?

Friendly suggestion: stop dropping the pump or gas cap on the ground. It can pick up a few grains of sand or dirt and then get dropped right into the gas can or tank.

I have found that even cleaning carb after removing it and take the float and needle valves out and the main jet too that it still will surge after cleaning all that. I ultimately had to drill out the main jet a 0.001 or .002 because it was running too lean. If anyone is too scared to do that then try ethanol free gas first because that would naturally enrich the mixture with the same volume of fuel used. I found that helped in my case before drilling the jet to be able to use regular unleaded with ethanol mixed in. Oh I forgot that you need to check the float level too ! If it’s too low then it runs lean also. I fixed my uncle’s brand new Pontiac in 1977 with a hesitation problem due to lean flow. His mechanic didn’t want to mess with it and the dealer couldn’t figure it out I believe. I found the float was set too low and that wasn’t enough to stop the hesitation so I was able to adjust the metering rod slightly higher as well. The car accelerated like it should with zero hesitation after that!

Watched another video in that the guy turned the black screw at pilot jet on carb all the way in noting how many turns it took to hit the end. Then after cleaning out , putting back he unscrewed it out again the same amount of turns it usually between 4-6 full turns , Good video 🕵️👍

Fun fact. Generators aren't designed to idle. The idle screw goes in far enough to hold the pilot jet, but it shouldn't be installed far enough to contact the throttle plate cam. Otherwise it will interfere with proper operation

Word to the wise. Don't use ethanol gas in anything that will set for a long time, as it will separate from the gas and foul your carburetor.
Use ethanol free gas instead. Also if you have a tank valve on the machine, turn it off and let the engine run dry of gas to shut it off to drain gas out off carburetor then shut off the off switch. This will help keep the carburetor clean for future use. If you are using 2 stroke engines be sure to drain the 2 stroke fuel after use, as it will gum up carburetor if stored for too long.

@@RepairGang where I live, there's no such thing as "gasohol". It's just the regular Shell v power super unleaded premium or the Total excellium 95 and yep, these 2 brands have a decent shelf life of 6 months to a full year because they already contain additives. I use total excellium 95 for most part and it has a strong old school petrol smell.
