Change the timing belt and water pump ASAP!! That leaking coolant might be the water pump, which could be a sign of imminent catastrophe!!
I've posted on the previous Prowler video on how the water pump (which tends to leak around 80k miles or after a certain age) was THE reason for the notorious 2.7L sludge issue.. it's the same water pump for the 3.2L and 3.5L which leaks coolant and could eventually seize, which would snap the timing belt (this is an interference engine, you can understand the urgency). Change it every 80k or seven years, and it's a 300k+ mile engine easy. Per the theme, it's a cheap and easy solution to an otherwise very long-lasting engine. Transmission, since it has a cooler, should be pretty stout, too. Neat vehicles.
new phone..who dis??
The water pump from the 2.7 is not the same as the 3.5. The 3.5 pump was driven by the timing belt, and if it started to leak it would run down the block and drip on the ground. The 2.7 was driven by a chain, in oil, and it leaked right into the pan..
@@dangermartin69 The pump itself is identical as I recall, but you're right about belt vs chain, which was the point I was trying to drive home. Leaking with a belt, NBD; leaking into oil? Catastrophic.
If the water pump goes out the timing belt goes and engine locks up and destroys itself. Timing belt idler can also seize up and destroy timing belt.
Keep posting Prowler content would love to see more on these cool cars. I loved how Chrysler was willing to take chances and try things other companies were unwilling to do. The Prowler and Viper were ahead of their time. I guess in some ways the Hellcat and Dodge Demon carry on that tradition in some ways.

14:20 - A little advice (Seems like I've given allot on this car so far, huh? Well I do work on Chryslers for a living), do both the idler pulley for the serpentine belt that was bad, and the one for the A/C belt. Well worth the extra expense, and you might as well do both belts at the same time, they have to come off anyway to replace the idler pulleys. Also check the repair history if you have it, see if the timing belt and water pump have been done. If not, do them both! It will be tighter to do in a Prowler, but what would rather spend, the parts and labor on a timing belt and water pump, or the parts and labor for an engine when the timing belt breaks and the engine bends the valves?
I love how Tyler pulls up in the garage and then looks round on the ramps........

The V6 was an insult to heritage when this car came out now it doesn’t seem as odd.
Ahead of it's time lol
Lol "an insult to heritage" catch a grip. There was no heritage of anyone mass producing hotrods, and if a powerful V6 existed in the 50s you can bet a lot of people would have used them. Hotrods are about speed and the lighter the engine the better for handling.
Those 3.5/3.6 V6 Chrysler engines were underpowered, so they worked well in base level passenger cars, but they absolutely sucked in heavier beasts like the Durango. The newer 3.6L Pentastar V6 would be a great swap in and have a lot more power.
@@cmdr_talikarni 253hp and 255lb-ft isn't underpowered from a 3.5L from 1999. I used to own a 2004 300M (same engine as the Prowler, miss my 300) and while it wasn't the fastest car around, it was still swift despite its 3800lb weight. And it would still get around 30 mpg on the highway. Provided I kept around 100km/h (60mph). Had a cracked vacuum line that disabled the cruise control for a while and without the cruise control that car would settle into a 120km/h (75mph) cruise down the highway.
That Prowler hauls ass.

The car Chrysler really should have built was the "Howler", the V8 version, that was not made.
Nothing an engine swap can't fix
Except for the hideous boat deck rear end 🤢
Eh. The 4.7L V8 they would've put in the Howler actually made less power than the 3.5, and was heavier. They should've just supercharged the 3.5 and given it a better transmission. Folks who've done that have gotten significant gains.
@@bradmurchison2770 Ah, but it wouldn't have had that "V8" sound, though!

Cruiser like cruising a rest stop off the highway. Sorry. I've never liked these cars. Don't take it personally.
Yes, I'd have to agree that there are some similar styling cues on both cars. Chrysler at this time were making some interesting cars; the Prowler being the most interesting. Retro mid 1930's design for the PT Cruiser and late '20's on the Prowler and they made it work. It would have been really cool if it had a rumble seat in the back. Too bad it did not come with a stick or a Magnum V8. Not a Cryco fan by any means but this is a cool car.

Coming from a 300M background, many would suggest the replacement of the timing belt and possibly the tensioner. Then while there, go ahead and replace the water pump. Chrysler suggested the timing belt be replaced every 100K miles or 7 years, whichever came first.
Had a Chrysler Concord with that same belt idler pully issue from brand new. Dealer never could find it even after I described the sound as "like a worn out, old metal roller skate wheel spinning. The bearing finally seized (out of warranty) and blew the power steering belt. I was amazed at how quiet the car ran as I muscled it back to the dealer without power steering. Dealer replaced the idler and the service writer told me "The idler bearing was bad. They sound like an old metal roller skate wheel when they start to go." I had him look up the history and the "Customer states engine is very noisy and sounds like old roller skate wheel when running." notation. They made the repair under warranty.

I had a guy around me who had a prowler exactly like this. Same color and all but I never realized how cool they were when I was younger.
All jokes about the "dumbest automotive channel" and about bad decisions aside, this channel really is a gem. Quite entertaining in unexpected ways, there's not that many people out there who experiment and explore cars in the flesh like you guys do. It's interesting to watch a video about the Prowler and its history, but it's much more interesting to see one of those lifted up in the shop, with two enthusiasts who care about the car.
I worked as a Chrysler service advisor at the time time these came out. I could tell you it was the idler tensioner before David looked at it.They all fail right after the warranty is up. Chrysler cars of the era were crap. I take that back: all the Chrysler products since forever are junk.Stay away or face peril.
Even the rebranded Mitsubishi imports were not good. A real pity because I loved my '85 Conquest. But it was a money pit.
My father sold Chrysler in the 80s and said the same thing...they were famous for fuel pumps and they were all junk.
Well, my experience with the big 3.5 in my 300m has been mixed. If not for the time the valve seals failed and caused massive misfiring, requiring a total top-end rebuild, I'd say it was actually great! Not trouble-free but stuff I could handle.
You've gotta admit timing belt is dead-easy in LH. Even my dumb ass could do it.
I've had nothing but good things to say about the Jeeps of this era. Besides chasing electrical issues (thanks to chrysler) the Jeep XJ and ZJ are both decent. Everything else fits your description just like most other "American" offerings at the time.
@@MrJamesonStyles I know of a guy who had well over 500k miles on his 300M. They're good cars. As you know, the LHs are, to this day, a weird breed as one of the only FWD vehicles with a longitudinally-mounted engine. Not sure why Chrysler did that, but it definitely made the timing service easier, and is a cool little "woah, wait a minute!" moment the first time you see one. IMO, the 3.5L HO was the most underrated V6 of the late '90s/early '00s.
I looked up growler on urban dictionary, i wasn’t actually expecting that.
Well that means you didn't watch top gear.... If you had then Mr Clarkson would have already provided you that hairy info

One thing you'll definitely need to check is the lower ball joints. If there is any cracks or tears in the boots replace immediately. The lower ball joints are sealed, so if any dirt gets in or any weather elements get in them (moisture), it can cause a catastrophic failure which can result in a wheel to pop off. It's not uncommon to replace them every 30,000 miles. If you do have that problem, don't ever go to a Mopar dealership. They will not sell you the lower ball joint (part is about $150.00 on ebay) but want to sell you the whole lower control arm which has the lower ball joint in it (part is about $1,250.00). If you do decide to have the dealership order the parts and have them work on your car expect to pay about $4,500.00. They will tell you it's a safety issue to just replace one lower control arm. They will tell you they will replace both sides and do an alignment. For me, I bought the ball joint off ebay. Bought some tools from Harbour Freight to press out lower ball joint from lower control arm. Cost me about $500.00 to do the work myself. If it happens again, just $150.00 since I've got all the tools to do the job. Another issue is the timing belt if it is old. If the belt breaks, engine is toast. Engine is an interference engine except for the first year Prowlers.
I'd bet that Hoovie has paid for this man's house, shop and daughters college tuition.
i remeber when the car wizards shop was a whole lot smaller.
