    You're incredibly talented! I am glad I stumbled onto your videos! The only thing I feel I would do different is add edge banding vaneer to the edging around the piece. It would have pulled it together beautifully and made it absolutely perfect! Not doing so you can see where the vaneer ends and it has a prominate dark line around it.

    I just picked up one, very similar, off the curb yesterday! The top is also the same lighter color. That's how I found this, looking for one similar for ideas. Mine is in almost brand new condition except the edges, bottom of the feet and the top, which you could tell was used as a workbench there are a lot of gouges and burns through the veneer or linoleum, I'm not sure which it is yet. I'm still in the cleaning phase. Love, love the scraping idea versus sanding. That will save a ton of paper and time. This one is 47"x 23 x 29. What are the dimensions with yours? I'm only half way through your video. Can't wait to see the finished product! 😁

      I don't have this one anymore but I know it was a bit smaller than the normal MCM desk. Your dimensions look similar from what I can remember. A local reseller/interior designer purchased it due to the smaller size fitting in a specific space. Finding this on the curb would be amazing!!

  • @mccommas2
    @mccommas2 Месяц назад

    Whenever I have seen anyone else popping on some veneer over laminate they have ALWAYS sanded the surface. I think not doing so was a mistake. It could pop up on your customer years down the road if it hasn't already before you sold it.
    You are right about the fumes of the contact cement -- wow! I never use a respirator for stain, paint or poly, but that stuff is bad. Definitely should be outside if at all possible. The fumes were even deadly the next day with the garage door open after the small boards I put together were supposedly dry.
    There was not laminate on the side? There was wood there? Did you peal it off?
    I got a laminate top and sides just below the top running all the way around. The laminate will have to be covered with the veneer in my case. I never considered removing it.

    Can’t send you a link but look up Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher. Have used this for years. It dissolves the finish rather than generating toxic sludge like the other strippers. Used to be called Formby’s Refinisher. Doesn’t work well with heavy poly finish but does well with shellac and lacquer finishes.

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  3 года назад

      I will need to pick up some to try out. I just read that it works as a wood conditioner in addition to removing varnish, lacquer and shellac which would be better. Thank you for your recommendation!

    So you did 6 coats of the rub on poly PLUS did a spray poly?

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 года назад +1

      If I remember correctly I did one or two coats of wipe on poly and didn't like the finish so switched to the aerosol. On the new raw wood veneers I often add multiple thin layers since there was no existing finish, and it helps to even out the grain. If I'm brushing on a finish I usually don't do as many coats since the layers are a bit thicker. Hope this helps!

    God, I hope you see this... I've been studying Transcend Furniture and she uses polycrylic. Since I'm ready to start (and like to be a master on my very first project) this insecurity about finishes is really messing with my head. General stain and black/navy chalk paint are what I'm going with. So... Polyurethane? Polycrylic? Any advice?

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 года назад

      Water based poly won't yellow the finish. If the color is dark enough you can used an oil based finish and it will just slightly darken the color. Water based is a safer choice. When you start to do more projects don't be afraid to swatch and test things out. Hope this helps! 💙
