this project, I restore a vintage children school desk that is covered in paint, ink and burn marks with lots of holes. I give it a beautiful walnut veneer and a brass inlay. I call it " Modern Vintage" I did my best to save as much of the original wood as I could.

Great videos, I enjoy watching them. You are very skilled and have an excellent attention to detail.
That’s very kind of you ❤️ thank you for watching and for the super thanks 😊
David es hermoso el diseño de este mueble, es un buen ejemplo de la cultura. Es triste que haya gente que los maltrata a tal grado. Gracias por devolverle bellezas y dignidad.
0:26 “and unfortunately probably some booogers.” 😂. I did not anticipate that bit of stellar commentary!
While I do understand your desire to do everything possible to bring these forgotten pieces back to their original beauty, something like this school desk just needs some character left. The burn marks and perhaps even some writing (I love you) are simple reminders of the the children who used it. Just my opinion.

Lol Thanks DJ ;-) always appreciate your support.
@@Flippingdrawers your work is always amazing 🙂

So many people would have trashed this desk or (maybe worse) painted it. So glad you rescued it!
Although I think I would have preferred to see the old burn mark (a sign of what the desk had gone through in its history) the finished result is absolutely lovely. Amazing job. Thanks.
It’s a beautiful restoration, but I agree. Sometimes those old stains and marks add charm.
I agree. Don't like that walnut veneer or the brass strip at all! I think it spoils the original look of the desk. Tho I have to admit a lot of hard work has brought this wreck of a desk back to life....
Sometimes I really prefer to know that a piece has a bit of evidence of abuse. I call it "history". Aren't we all marked by wear and tear? You do great work!
Ahhhhhhhh Happy days. There was nothing more satisfying than slamming the lid down on this desk when getting your books out for a lesson at school. Great work.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...mixing sawdust with glue is so brilliant!!! I would have NEVER thought of that. I LOVE IT!
Enjoyed your resurrection of the school desk. Personally l loved the original wood with all the hundreds of memories gouged in.
It turned out great. Who would have known there was beautiful wood hidden under all the muck & graffiti!
This could have won any ugly duckling challenge! You do beautiful work. I hope it is a relaxing way to recharge from your work as a nurse. Thank you for both saving lives and letting us enjoy your videos. Two kinds of healing!
Thank you Barbara! that is very kind and that is exactly why I started doing this. It helps me unwind.
Barbara speaks for many of us. 💕
I watched this video again...and this time, I've gotten to know your style a lot more and have to appreciate your different types and colors of wood on the same piece. This turned out REALLY nice.
Yay, thank you!
The brass inlay. Karol. I am floored ❤ Who would have thought a school desk could look so freaking amazing! 😳
Thanks Friend 🥰 I’m definitely doing it again. Love brass🤩
Beautiful work! I love your analogy of aging furniture to aging people.
Thanks ☺️
The basic design of this school desk is so elegant. I can see why you have been wanting one. I kept thinking that you would preserve the history of the children that used it over the years. In the end, your choices and especially the finished top just added to the elegance of the basic design. Your hard work paid off.
Thank you Patricia ;-)
I cannot comment. I end speechless when you finish the work in your furniture.
😱Aaaah! Wow! Hermoso!
You really have a gift!
Thank you so much 😊
Wonderful video and amazing work! I am so in awe of people with the skills and patience to refurbish useful and, often, beautiful things. It's like a person can see, in the mental eye, what the potential is and works towards that. Is it like that for you? Thank you!
Thank you and yes 😉
One of my favourites. Currently binge watching on a chilly afternoon.
I love seeing old items brought back to a useful condition again. Now all you need is a little school desk chair project to go with it.
RUclips audiences are the best. Always surprising channel owners with generous and awesome stuff👍👍🙏🏽 Random acts of kindness🤗
Wow, you certainly took me back to my school days ( in the 1960s) when we had those type of school desks. You really did a fantastic job, of bringing it back, to its natural wood beauty. Thank you very much. Julia Cassidy from Nottingham England 🇬🇧
Thank you Julia 😉
You never know what you're getting yourself into going in, but the final result is beautiful!
That thing looked damnear impossible to rescue, but by Jove he did it!
The walnut veneer and brass inlay surprised me by its beauty! There is a real artistry to this and you certainly have it! Please keep making videos.
Thank you 😊 will do.
I have been watching your channel for what seems like forever but somehow I missed this little gem. It turned out beautiful. It’s amazing how much more comfortable you are on camera just a short year later, your humor definitely shows through much more now!
Wow, this takes me back 65 years!! Back in my day every desk looked like the one at the start! Thank you for reviving lost memories and for a wonderful restoration!
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better- you added the inkwell! Ta da!
Thank you ☺️
I love what you do. You are preserving the older designs, the materials no longer available and the work put into producing these old workhorses long ago. It's respectful. Seeing what works and what doesn't work is so helpful, too. Thank you!
Thank you 😊
Gee, you’re one determined fella! Excellent if not long winded job!
Definitely a whole lot of work, but WOW, this piece turned out amazing. GREAT JOB!!!!!!! 👍
Thank you so much 😀
I love how you keep as much original wood and hardware that you can these beautiful old pieces need to be saved because the stuff now has no character in its designs it’s sad really, there’s no pride in the workmanship any more!! Great job!
Wonderful finished restore. Genius idea about using the brass. As you were going over your options, as I listened, I never would have devised something so brilliant. I admire that you want to keep as much as possible, but this.... amazing. Thank you!
Thank you ☺️
I think you for being such a kind and gentle craftsman. Human beauty once laws can never be replaced only improved with good fortune and skill. You provide both to many wonderful old pieces, you know, revitalized, and admired again.
That’s very kind. Much appreciated
I loved this project! It's a little sentimental because when I was a little girl my family lived in south Wales for a couple of years and I used a desk similar to this one in school. It's really nice to see you give this well-used piece new life.
There's just no substitute for imagination combined with skill.
❤️❤️❤️
Woodworking without a even a shed in the UK.🥶 extra points for hardiness and as usual beautiful project, would love something like that in our hallway.
that's very kind mate. Thank you
The little school certainly looks elegant now. We didn’t have that style in Australia in the mid 1960s when I started school. ❤ some child will love it in their bedroom.
An amazing restoration to that school desk after many years of carelessnes and abuse from its students. Congratulations.
❤️❤️❤️
Seeing where you have started on this piece...no one will ever think that this can be transformed into this beauty. Hands down....your talent and patience is really amazing!
Thank you 🙏
That brass inlay was just perfect!
This looks wonderful. I wasn’t sure about the inlay, but it really looks good.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, you are an amazing artist. Your work is masterful.
I remember using one of these in primary school, the boys had marble runs on the inside of the lids and used to poke marbles down the ink wells which never had ink wells in them so I wasn't surprised this one didn't have one. Lovely restoration, really liked the brass inlay!
Thank you for sharing that. I’m glad you like this video. 🥰
Went to elementary school in the early 50s. Yep, long time ago! We had glass ink-wells and teacher would fill them with a premixed powdered ink. We black wooden pens with brass nibs. It was an art filling the nib with the perfect amount of that watery ink!! The paper was that cheep primary lined type. Too much ink and any pressure would result in a big wet blotch ! More often than not, with that cheep paper, the nib would get clogged with paper fibers. Instant mini paint brush. The result looked like a painters drop cloth. It was hilarious!!
@@johnkissam8312 Yes that takes me back to my Primary school 1950s in London. I remember the pens you spoke of and I remember the transition to BIC ballpoint pens during that time also.
Beautiful! Between the music and your voice, I find your videos so relaxing. I like that you saved the original makers mark.
This little desk is so sweet...now. I wouldn't have given two cents for it before! Some child(or several children) were not kind to this desk.
You have restored it so beautifully. Now, someone can enjoy it once again. Great job! 🙂👍
Thank you Holly . I agree
I love how particular you are with all your detail work on pieces. This was an amazing piece after completion. You are very talented and very lucky to have found your calling in life.
I didn't realize how much work could go into such a small piece. Great job!
Thank you and yes ! A lot
I swear I heard angels sing when you put that inkwell in! 🙃 It was the proverbial cherry on top. Beautiful!
🥰
Another gorgeous job. I love how you add brass accents to your pieces. It really sets them apart from others.
Glad you like them!
Oh the nostalgia here! We had those desks when I was in school in the 60s. I even remember, after watching this, the "ESA" logo. Then, when I was in high school doing Woodwork, we actually made use of old scrapped desks as raw material for our projects.
Beautiful work, the brass inlay was a really nice addition.
That was a wonderful save! Thank you for keeping all the original wood. Beautiful!
You do amazing work…you made the desk look better than it did originally. Looking forward to more transformations
Oh wow! That looks awesome! Such fantastic work you do!
Magnificent! I love these old desks. The ones I grew up using had metal legs & no delightful curves (New Zealand in the 90s, what can I say) but this renovation really raises the bar. Like Wow. That, neighbour, is an Instafollow.
Thank you 🙏
I would not have thought you could get it that clean. Excellent project!
I went to school with one of those when I was really little , in South Georgia, USA 🇺🇸. But the ink well was replaced with a pencil cup and the small hole beside it was for a small flag for when you were done with your work( put the flag up for done). You did a great job.
Oh, that's very interesting, I didn't know that ;-) Thank you for sharing that.
VERY VERY PRETTY!! A desk like this could make kids want to go to school, lol. Thank you for sharing the experience!
Thank you ☺️ my pleasure
Lovely job. I'm old enough to remember using a school desk like this. I kept mine a little better than the one you started off with..definitely no boogers!😁 if ever i moved anywhere big enough to accommodate extra furniture I'd love to have one of these for reasons of sentimentality and nostalgia. X
Much appreciated
How good that little desk looks now. What a good job. Sir.
Stunning restoration & transformation! I really love that brass inlay.
Thank you 😊 I do too. Will do more
This brought back some memories of going to school here in Wales in the 80s and 90s
You continue to amaze us with your restorations! This was such a great piece of work and we really like the inlay that you added! Well done Jay!
Thanks guys ;-) You are doing great yourselves and I love that you are not afraid to explore new things. Definitely more inlay coming from me ;-)
Turned out absolutely beautiful ❤
Wow, just wow! This is just so beautifully done. The brass strip really gave it something extra. Nice work, Jay!
There is something about brass and beautiful grain... Thank you Tarnya ;-)
I sat at desks like this throughout my whole school life.
I can not believe you were able to save that! Seeing that desk brought back a lot of memories LOL, here in New England, though they had a lot more metal - and I remember always whacking my knees! But - seeing that? I am amazed at the amount of work it took, the care put into it. I hope it finds a fantastic home, it deserves a special place after all that work! You did wonderful work on that! Well done :) great video as always
Thank you Annie!!! that is very sweet. I appreciate that and I am glad it brought back some memories.
Holy mackerel, that’s a thing of beauty!! Me at 15:45- 😍😍😍😍
☺️ yes I agree. The walnut and brass just look so beautiful. I need to buy a proper veneer roll rather than the panels but it’s sooooo expensive.
This looks really lovely! I’m so happy that you were able to restore the desk!
Thank you Joyce ! 😊
Love the top with it's bold white line and beautiful wood grain.
Wow… thank you for not painting over it!!! 💜
Beautiful work!!!
You’re welcome
Beautiful restoration. My father who was a B-17 mechanic, 1944 and 1945, spent a lot of time in Bristol during the war.
It looks beautiful. Could the placement of the brass strip interfere with the purpose of the desk top to provide a smooth surface for writing and drawing?
Thank you and no, it is completely flush with the veneer.
Don’t see the subscribe button. Love watching your masterful work
I just can’t fall in love with the brass inlay . No school desk would have had that , and some of the scars would tell the story of its past . Why hide everything !
So great the talent that gives these pieces a second life 😄
If you are planning on similar projects with ink stains, you may want to check on custodial supply stores. I've used several brands of vandalism remover, and it will work wonders on ink and magic marker.
Your dedication to your craft is amazing. It was hard work getting all that writing and stains off that desk. But as we can see it was worth it. As always, thank you for sharing.😊
Thanks!
❤️thanks
All the hard work to remove the differents stain and ink, had paid off in the end. The result is stunning. 👍
Thanks so much 😊
As you know I turned up at the end of the premiere so had to go back to watch it from the start and I'll be watching it again before the night is out (after the great pottery throw down). I don't know what to say. The difference of night and day there. It's far more beautiful now than it was when it started it's life. You did a fabulous job there JK. I absolutely LOVE the brass inlay. Just ingenious. Totally elevated it. Well done and I love how well you improvised and the amount of things you tried to get rid of the stains. Thank you so much for this. A lot learned. Can I ask please, what brush are you using for the feed 'n' wax? I need to get one.
awwww ever you are most welcome and as always very much appreciate your feedback and your kind words. As far as the brush, I can't find the exact one but look for a large round natural bristle brush. Those are the best and if you clean them with white spirit they are as new and will last a long time. Just don't get the cheapest ones as they shed.
@@Flippingdrawers Thanks a million. I appreciate that. Yeah was looking at a few with good ratings on amazon but wasn't sure. Now I know. Thanks again. Edit: Found some, cheers.
This is incredible! Your perseverance shames me. Wow, Karol.
Thank you ☺️
Just over 60 years ago I was appointed "Ink Monitor" as I could be trusted to fill the inkwells without slopping it all over the desks - odd really because I always came home with ink stains on my fingers from dipping the pen too far!
Did you consider simply flipping the desktop upside down as that would have given you a cleaner surfance to work with?
Either way, an impressive job - gold star, go to the top of the class!
I did consider it but there were groves in the sides for the hinges and it was not cut in the middle so that was not an option. Cool story ;-)
Stunning piece brought back so many school memories even writing on the desk lid Stunning Hooe it's a keeper beautiful restoration
That brass inlay is a beautiful detail. I love old school days furniture. Splendid!
Absolutely fantastic just love the finished desk reminds me of the ones at the first school I went to before you renovated the desk.
Watching his videos, the voice the accent, I go into a meditative state. Very talented, with a great attention to detail. Great work, very enjoyable for my train ride/commute..
Thanks Rich😉
Your attention to detail is something to behold! Well done!
Thank you very much!
I really think the choices on this combined to make a great piece... The dark on the inside is my favorite part i love how it brought out all the lovely wood patterns
Thank you 😊
I must be vintage! All the school desks were like that when I started school. They are still around, I see them at auctions and sales.
Another faded beautiful that your hands bring back to life with finesse ❤️
This took me back to early elementary school. In another comment I learned you are a nurse. I'm a newly retired RN (48 years in practice) I thoroughly understand flipping drawers as an outlet for ....
ha ha ha very true ;-) thank you
So beautiful and the brass inlay is just the finishing touch
Thank you ;-)
I remember these desks from primary school!
Wow! Gorgeous! And I am stunned by how very much your workspace has changed over one year! You are very hard working and innovative! And it shows! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!

Beautiful restoration of a old school desk lovely
Poor little desk is loved! 😊
Wonderful work, this deck reminds me of my youth.
