If I recall right, James was actually inspired by a football game to write this. Clearly its about front line soldiers of war. My favorite song of theirs pre-black album.

I have to see them again before they hang it up. Last time I saw them was in 91-92 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on the Black Album. James was in an arm cast and John Marshall from Metal Church played James' guitar parts.

I don't care if you are watching Metallica live from 1983, 1993, 2003, 2013, or probably 2023, they are always playing like it's their first time or their last time.
Can you imagine that song 30 years old and they still play it that fast, parts of song 220bmp
Fun fact: people think this song is about anti war but really James Hetfield (singer) was watching NFL Films documentary and thought nfl players put their bodies through pain etc just for a game.

This is a great song but the worst version live. The best version live is in 1985 in Germany. Even though it is on vhs tape put on you tube it's still way better than this version.
Will check out, cheers for info. This has to be the best live performance of this song in recent years tho, at least the best I can find online. Fire fire with fire at this same gig was pretty damn good too tbf.
