- "People will headbang" - Hetfield
- "We made the world a better place" - Ulrich
These boys never lie.
JC/DC Yea..Can't deny,.Truth Right there!!
JC/DC Damn right
Amen 🤘
You’re damn right I headbang
Those boys ? Those MASTERS you should say.
4:39
"Just don't write any ri-"
"MY GOOOD!" *writes a riff*
I love that part so much
V'yell Gohl They’re so friggin adorable 😍😂
V'yell Gohl itca I think James has the power to produce riffs at will
No life till leather gonna kick... oh oops
V'yell Gohl James Hetfield is the riff master
That rig needs a song
Hetfield is a riff factory. The man's brain is made for this...such a creative soul.
Can you imagine if Jeff had a real drummer!
@@PramodSetlur who is Jeff!
James James! Idk why I typed Jeff 🤣
@@PramodSetlurJeff is the new Metallica member
Lars - "Don't write any riffs!"
James - *pulls an e🅱️ic riff out of his ass*
Funny shit.
Good one
It’s kind of like he started playing “Seek and Destroy” but made a different melody out of it haha
Have never fucking played a guitar, dude? How else do you play a riffs, come on....SMH
amjan wut
I love how Kirk just comes in out of nowhere, hears what they've done so far, says "wow", then just hammers out a face melting solo like it's nothing.
Ikr?!
You know he's got solos pre written right? He just adjusts the scale it's in
Matthew Walsh hes Kirk Hammett, hes a god!
I hate most solos of this album. They sound like shit
@_nik_ha_ me too
Is anyone else low-key obsessed with Metallica’s HQ? I feel like they bought a warehouse, built a studio in it and called it there adult-hangout spot. So fucken cool man.
If I remember, its actually an old airplane hangar that they converted into HQ. I cant think of any musician who wouldnt love to be able to do that! Having their entire operation and history contained in that one space definitely would fuel creativity on a massive level.
I recall James talking about wanting to take the garage that they wrote Puppets in and moving the whole thing to HQ, only to find out it had been torn down...but then was stoked to learn they saved some of the lumber, so he had Ken Lawrence turn it into his guitar "Carl". Definite mojo flying around there!
Trivium also has a air plane hanger as of summer 2021
I really love to see all the old memorabilia like the eet fuk guitar from the justice tour
They're a garage band. They made it so they built a bigger garage. So awesome.
I hear it stinks in there. But that's the only downside. Kind of a stale meat smell.
It's amazing how simplistic songwriters they are. They have no real tactics beyond just trial and error and "Finding pieces that connect", you'd think after all these years they'd have a process but its just like getting with your buddies and jamming. Very humbling.
Andromeda That's how most of us do it. You play stuff until you find something that's good, and when you do, you continue until you find something that fits the first part :p
That's rock and roll dude
when you come up with a part.. instead of trying to figure out where to go next, find out first where did it come from..
and then when you do that, you'll find where to go next...
They DO have a process, you described it, dipshit!
@@MrParkerman6 The process has structure, the steps to make a song. Metallica doesn't have one, they figure what's working on the spot. Check out Mick Gordon's talk at GDC 2017, the first part of it is exactly about that.
4:20 rob using a pick
4:44 a riff worthy of to be in kill em all
Sounded like hit the lights
Sounded like sorta like Powerslave by Iron Maiden to me
Like a mix of Horsemen and Lights
Yeah cause God's recording it
Russel Keith Liao at 4:44 he used that guitar on Kill Em All
2:10 Hetfield.exe has stopped working
Windows is currently finding a solution to the problem
Because Lars Urlich VonLichtenstein is a dumbass
needs to be top comment
Lol even Rob was trying to act like he didn't hear that
lol
Lars: "chi militia.."
Lars: "CHI MILITIA!!!" >:(
larsno
I was hoping he'd say Metal Militia
It’s cool that they acknowledge that they’re “ripping off” their own song.
Lars Ulrich: What about Chi Militia?
Sebastian Bach: What about Savage Animal?
LU: Chi Militia!
SB: Savage Animal!
LU: CHI MILITIA!
SB: SAVAGE ANIMAL!
guy behind glass: "got it 😢"
1:04 -"People will headbang"
- If you play it live, for fuck's sake
zulka 123 there probly waiting for the U.S. tour
I hope so! it's a really good song
Austin Marcott I'm gonna see them in Chicago in June so hopefully they'll play it there for the first time!
The Real Eric Mitchell July Atlanta and this is the song I want played the most!
The Real Eric Mitchell most likely they'll play it live for the first time at the first us tour date which is in Philly which I'm going to
11:35 That distorted bass was great.
It reminded me of Cliff's solo performance.
It's ironic that my two favorite bassists end up playing for the same band.
that riff it's in the actual song
Rob did some good work on Jerry Cantrells Degradation trip
That's not what irony is.
"Just don't read the comments" - James Hetfield
He knows lol
cracked me up ^^
*suppresses urge to make some snarky comment*
Mario Castillo El diablo sabe más por viejo que por diablo?
He's Catching On . Everybody Run , Lol .
Holy crap it finally arrived... off to the next best 15 minutes of my day
This Video endet just to fast :(
"Work, work"
lol mine too
2:39 "it doesnt have an identity yet" little did they know at the time, this would be arguably thee best thrash track theyve released since puppets. Unbelievable track, unbelievable album 6 years later still listening to it almost everyday.
Whenever I play this album I always pause and stretch my neck before this track in particular lol it's an amazing song
That is the dumbest opinion I've ever heard, the fact you would rank this higher than any thrash song after puppet is some smooth brained shit
"All nightmare long" was a thrash masterpiece too
Totally. It’s amazing.
Wait, what are we going to complain about now??
metalforever12345 They didn't play it live yet
They didn't play it live yet and I want Lords of Summer live
metalforever12345 Lets go back to Lars and his lack of drumming skills even tho he killed it in Hardwired to self destruct
metalforever12345 😂😂😂
Them not releasing the Master or Justice box sets yet!
It's always nice to see the "Eet Fuk" guitar
13:57 love that part, so glad they kept it in.
Yesss it's been a while since Kirk did some sweeps
5:51 That explains why they didn't know we wanted them to play "Spit" live for over a year
14:43 *CLASSIC PAPA HET RIGHT THERE!*
Exactly the 89-91 James! :')
canyouquack canyouquack 89-93 james holy i came after that
Show this to guys saying that he lost his range and voice 😂
@@makifrable Due to age and touring 24/7 it's pretty clear that James preserves his voice nowadays. He won't go all out with his voice live because there's only so much left in the tank there. Saving his best for when they record is a smart thing to do. He sounded great on HTSD.
@@oldcat7 Exactly!
13:42 does literally no one else see the tiny James on the les Paul?
Logan the Roman James with his 90’s moustache.
That section where Rob is recording the bass just shows how important bass is for songs
Sounded like the bass from the band Mountain.
"People will headbang." Yes, yes they will.
After hearing "spit out the bone" for the 1st time i knew my neck would start to hate me
4:39
"don't write any riffs"
"Mah Gawd"

5:51 "just don't read the comments"

4:57 "God's recording it." I bet that's what Kirk told himself when he threw away his phone.

Isaac Santos Yeaaaahhh !
SPIT OUT THE BONE!!!

Robert is there almost every day and people still call him a session musician. Yet, Kirk just shows up for his solos.
Robert is part of Metallica. The band is better for it
14:44 vintage James, the grain of his voice.
"You guys can play, we just can't record, so..."
"M'kay. Hey, Hetfield. Don't write any riffs ri-"
"WHAT? WRITE RIFFS!?"
"No! DON'T write any riffs!"
"OKAY!" *starts riffing* "I'M GONNA WRITE SOME RIFFS NOW!"

"GOD DAMN IT, JAMES!"
Jakuzure Nonon i love how Lars brings out his phone to record
"I can't hear you, the kids are yelling, I guess you said HIT THE GAAASSS..."
James “Riff Machine” Hetfeild everybody
Telling Hetfield not to write riffs is like telling a chicken not to cluck
Never met these guys and yet they have had more of a bearing on my life than most of the people I HAVE met.
James, Kirk, Lars, Cliff, Jason, Rob - I love you all. Some of the most formative moments in my life had your music set to the background.
And now we wait for the jason fans
2:21 If Spit Out The Bone was in St. Anger (ignore the guitar tuning)
*IT'S HERE!!*

😂😂😂
4:11 lars' smile while james riffing. flathead and the mighty het. after 35 years they can still write so fucking great thrash riffs. i think lars was thinking this right there. he just looked his old friend and smiled.
Lars is a master of song arrangements
Brad Lund Wow!
Waselt Ed That's evil lmao
Master of song arrangements, I'm pulling your strings!
Metallica's greatest asset is their transitions, and Lars is hugely responsible for sorting them out.
Correct. He also has that odd talent of taste arbiter: If Lars says it sounds good and/or is cool, it is good and cool.
I’m so happy to know that the “EET FUK” guitar is still alive, I thought that after all this years that guitar was gone
Not worth the risk of having it stolen or dropped. Piece of music history right there
This is just one of those videos I was hoping would never end. So awesome!!
Chippah tssss my muddah always said spit out the bone after lamar left. fawk yeah
I think these kind of studio peeks really show how Lars Ulrich is far from being useless in terms of songwriting and musicianship
True that, but Lars is still contributing to the session, keeping tempo and generally not being a pissy bitch (like back in the early 2000s). I'm not saying that this Metallica renaissance known as "Spit out the bone" was Lars's idea, but I'm just pointing out that Lars is clearly not some kind of burden to bear for the rest of the band, which is a popular belief online. People seem to forget that many of the Metallica classics have been forged with Lars on the lead, and that he's not just some megalomaniac Danish dude.
EDIT: so in the original comment that I was replying to it was written as "His vision" which I mistook for "Rob's vision", when that was not the implied meaning. My bad for mixing that up
I'm pretty sure Rob said in an interview that the song was Lars' idea, i think that's what the other guy meant.
He is the creator of the soul idea for spit out the bone..haters hate cause it's a hate train, easy to ride it..but should they, FUCK NO..Lars has improved a shit tone !
You joking? Ever wonder why lars in the studio all the time.?
It's just the echo chamber effect. Someone sees a bunch of people saying Lars sucks so they hop on the bandwagon. They can be willfully ignorant because they aren't challenging what is the status quo so the odds of some one calling them out on their bullshit tend towards the low side.
And to think, these guys almost broke up during the recording of St. Anger. It's so awesome to see how far they've come and how compatible they are today. The jokes, the camaraderie, the creativity, and the overall vibe was just awesome.
Some Kind of Monster showed us that St. Anger had basically _none_ of that, and it was so depressing. We were watching a band just tear themselves and each other apart for personal and creative issues between all of them. The biggest obstacle being James' sobriety, trying to recover his life and band from his devastating Addiction. I dont think he laughed or even smiled one time during the whole movie :\
And now look at them. They just enthusiastically bounce off each other's vibe and ideas the whole time, making great music and most importantly, they're having FUN. TOTAL comeback, both musically and personally. Let's all give these guys a round of applause 👏 Thank God they stuck together! I will never stop loving Metallica! 🤘
Lars is a legend end of story. He plays a crucial part in Metallica and has always done that. Arranging songs etc etc. He is not the best drummer in the world but he is far from a bad drummer.
That is so true... Finally someone who understand.
Nowadays, he is a bad drummer. He has very simple fills, can't play double bass and can't stay on time. He does not fit in a thrash metal band.
Taurus yeah it’s sad to admit, he said in an interview that does not practice drums at all anymore
@@kxle3918 I know.. it's a shame :P
@@Taurus1337 Do you have that written somewhere so you can copy-paste it on every metallica video? They are playing 2 and a half hour shows, keep that in mind. Check out the performance of Fade to Black from Vienna.
It took them so long to upload the making of spit out the bone because they were trying to find clips of Kirk😂
Cuz he was still trying to find his Phone He DA
His solo was sick tho
what people think Lars lacks in ability he more than makes up for in his unbelievable ability to put a song together.
He's so lacking in ability he'd be better off being in the band as a composer rather than a musician. He's just hopeless.
@@BrendanDufftronic just wrong end of convo mate
The part where James is explaining to Lars and Rob the concept of "the machine, the greater good...being a part of something but having to give up some individuality for the machine"....that whole quote IS the genius of James Hetfield, and THAT has been what has taken them SO far all these years...true intellectual cerebral genius. I'd love to be inside the labyrinth of that mans brain!! And Lars is exactly the same way as well...that's what makes them such a good band and song writing team...I love it!!!
Gun Slinger 1500% agreed!!!
Thank you, bro. Rock on!!
It simply means to be against the system, but to be sucessfull sometimes got to crawl up his ass. Common, basic philosophy
that's kind of important part of being in successful band too...
Exactly, how well lyrics/meaning connect with music. That is what makes song special for me. Not just pure vibe and good riffs. Hetfield and Lars are geniuses together.
Ol' Hetfield is still a riff machine. I love the way Lars hears the riff right around 8:40 or so and just grabs the sticks. Say what you want about the guys' drumming, but if Lars likes something, it's usually damn good -- and this is damn good.
13:00 “it’s almost 7 o’clock? It’s not even 6” “in an hour it will almost be 7 o’clock” 😂
That's what Lars was trying to say to begin with though.
1:04 "People will headbang"
He's totally right, he knows what the fans really like. Long live Papa Het!
YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HOW LONG I WAITED FOR THIS VIDEO!!!
Considering the song was released in November i'd say About 4 or 5 Months :p
Jacob Speedy true
I can’t believe this was two years ago. How time flies 🤘🏻
At 14:44 exactly the same voice that James had in his early years
Sounds like the Load era to me.
Seems to be partly thanks to the vocalzones in the background..
+RickGrimes41 I watched part 14:14 until the end fifty times!
Sounds like his 2017/16 voice
HOLY SHIT, JAMES HETFIELD 1986 SPECIAL APPEARANCE
6:13 FUCK, I LOVE THE VOCALS HERE, THEY NEED TO RELEASE THE DEMOS OF THE ALBUM
Luis Navarrete yeah sounds better to me than the studio
Definitely, sounds like a combination of groovy and thrash, really cool
Luis Navarrete Sounds like something from Death Magnetic or Beyond Magnetic.
Is it me or that part sounds like early Foo fighters lol
Sounds like all, but definitely sounds really badass
1:10 Slim James
1:40 Not so slim
White shirts can make you look more fit
damn watching them create this song just proves James is the metal riff genius....awesome how they put this together.
"People will headbang"
- James Hetfeild
Metallica always satisfies the whims of their fans. And still, they gonna keep bitchin'
Lol
I read a comment a while ago. "No one hates metallica more than a metallica fan"
5:40 "...we can record it, we can put it on the record, *we can play it live*"
MetalBlade lol
EET FUK EET FUK DID YOU SEE IT 😍😍
3:42 Lars thinks he is a goldfish
Lmfao 😂
I want to be as happy when working my day job as Lars is when playing drums.
Lars seems like the mastermind behind every single song, it's him who is working all the time and is always looking to fix the song in a way and make it better, which is quite demanding. He deserves more recognition and appreciation.
6:32
They got a picture of Charles Mingus on the top left hand corner of the whiteboard with a quote of his that reads, "Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple."
That bass with the distortion! ...so badass
Still watching in May 2020 remembering how we were ALL waiting for this particularly “Making Of” video to be released. 😎
if James wanted he could sing like the black album era, but that would destroy his voice for ever
Max Arambula no not really. Chuck billy, steve zetro souza, Bobby blitz, mille petrozza, etc. still sing how they used to like they did back in the day and are doing just fine with their voices
David Catanus but not everybody has the same endurance over time. Doesn't have to do with talent. Phil Collins, who was a tremendously talented drummer, can't play anymore because of the physical problems he has, probably because of age, but not because of a lack of talent or skill.
CoTeCiOtm you mean can't play as fast as he used to? yeah I suppose as you get older you're not as energetic as you once were but age doesn't determine skill. If you at least practice your instrument, you'll still sound awesome matter how old you are whether or not you can play fast technical stuff. Buddy rich is a perfect example.
David Catanus No, he actually has a spine problem that makes him unable to pick up a drumstick with his left hand, apart from other problems which causes him pain when trying to play drums. He can't play at all.
CoTeCiOtm oh ok, now that I didn't know
I'm so disappointed that Kirk phoned in every solo on this record... But those vocals!!! Keep barking James, that's what we all want to hear. Best song they've put out in probably 20 years.
Damn, just thought about it... Best song they've put out in 26 years!!
Andy Oliphant try 30
Andy Oliphant halo on fire was his best solo in a long time
Andy Oliphant Did you listen to anything off death magnetic?
billizkuel87 Yes, I grudgingly gave it a shot and did not like it. I didn't expect to like HTSD either, and actually didn't even plan on checking it out at all. Liquid Metal started heavy rotation of Hardwired and I thought "huh, that's the least worst thing they've put out in a while." Then they started playing Moth and it grew on me. Then SOTB blew me away, and I bought the record.
Some would say this is the best track since Justice. I say it's the best track overall. This is a masterpiece. So many bands say, "the new song is the best we've ever done". You guys have actually pulled it off. Seriously great stuff.
14:44 “future supreme” sounds like classic Hetfield from the Justice era 🤘🏻
True, I wish it was included in the final mix
Sounds more like Load. The melody, especially.
A banda mais sincera do mundo. Mostram o processo criativo, as tretas, as ideias... Desde sempre são assim. Por isso, sou fã, mais que admirador da música.
Kirk says "I'll be at the beach, I got my phone on if you guys need me"
That's no reassurance since Kirk will probably "accidently" delete his phone again anyways.
OMFG IT'S FINALLY FUCKING HERE YAAAAAS
6:20 still love that version of the verse. Hope they can apply it to another song
I love watching these guys work and make music, makes me want to play and start another band. Down to earth guys, cool that they are still working like this. Brings me back to the St Anger vlogs which is really enjoyed.
"People will headbang."
Right you were, James.
He still has it in him! Hetfields vocals at 14:40! Oh hell yeah! \m/ \m/
Never lost it. The only reason he never pulls that shit live is that if he tried to keep doing that, he would lose it.
I get the feeling Kirk really had very little to do with this album at all.
Bestwick1983 he lost his phone which had a shit ton of recordings and he never backed his phone up.
Bestwick1983 I think he was also in rehab during the recording
Bestwick1983 I have the physical CD and he's not credited for writing on any song so no, he didn't take any part in writing
Lars and James took his phone while Kirk was asleep and threw it in the ocean.
Bestwick1983 well the real alternate name for this song was "Kirk Lost His Phone"
Just imagine whole album like this song. But I still love the album so much
"People will headbang". Understatement of the year
3:44: For the first time ever Lars is counting and James isn’t
Wasn’t Lars missing a beat?
Edit: I mean James wasn’t counting but Lars missed a beat imo..
@@MsEledi No. Lars didn't miss a beat. He added a beat. If he missed a beat he would have come in early but he came in late. Either way, James was on and Lars was off despite his "counting".
Must have never heard lepper messiah
@@pthibault630 James threw Lars off when he came in early that's why Lars added an extra beat before hitting the snare

Hands down my favorite Metallica song ever. & I've been a fan since the beginning & no other song in their catalog hit & moves me like this song. Amazing! 👊
That face at 4:10, Lars knew they hit gold
Not only is this song the best on the album it’s one the best they’ve ever created! I’d put it up with there with all their “classic” hits. It’s genius cause this song combines ALL the great elements of Metallica’s song we love. And James voice!!!! Especially the bridge section “Stop breathing and dedicate to me” Awwww classic and sooo damn good! This song is WAY underrated.
4:27 my gaucho James pouring some water in the mate
11:00 this with Robert is sooooo worth hearing and watching again and again over and over...Awesome just the best of the best.

The classic Hetfield "YEAH!" after that last "Spit out the bone!" still gives me chills every time. \m/
11:12 with his fingers? HOW?!
Kwyjibo2006 just like Cliff play Fight fire with fire
Kwyjibo2006 what.
Jason can't even do that.
I just went to go try it, out of curiosity. Not to say it's easy, but it was certainly within my realm of ability. I've been a bassist for about 10 years, so it's mostly just practice.
Practice makes close.
These guys look like they're having fun again. Great to see.
Kirk doesn't do shit, he just comes in, makes up a solo on the spot and dips out.
could be something to do with him losing 200 riffs that were on his phone...☎
Thank God I no longer have to see DO SPIT OUT THE BONE on every Metallica video I click! Shyt was getting old!
these studio writing session videos are amazing
Probably the greatest metallica song in last 20-25 years
6:15 this version of the verse is SICK! I like the one that ended up on the track tho
