Okay - he's not the most technically gifted drummer, nor does he have quite as much stamina as perhaps he once did but watching this clip it's so clear that Lars contributes so much more to Metallica than just drumming. Without him they would really struggle when it comes to writing and particulalry arrangement. All you haters out there seem to forget that.
Lars is a great songwriter, composer, and occasional drummer. I forget how they phrased it but they said that Lars is the heart and James is the soul (or something like that).
Dude, he IS a very fucking good drummer. I don't need ant George Kollias blasts, Thomas Haake time signatures, nor Brann Dailor fills over Metallica. The guy is one of the moste creative artists ever to have sit behind a kit, therefore he is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Technique is only accessory to innovation. Creative contribution to the world is greatness.
You can really tell that James is way more comfortable with Lars making suggestions to help the song writing process. You can also tell that Lars is a bit more sensitive when it comes to suggesting changes. They've both definitely grown from when they wrote St. Anger and constantly argued.
The first time I heard the "Hello darkness, say goodbyeeee" part, my jaw physically dropped and everytime I hear it I get all emotional for some reason. What an excellent song
It's like GNR's "Locomotive". It was years till I discovered that song on my CD. I ignored Halo until the internet kept talking about how great it was, and now it's a favorite... but I wouldn't have discovered it until I relistened to the album years from now (probably) if it weren't for the web. Kept thinking about that while watching this video.
A lot of people underestimate Lars, this video perfectly captures the dynamic between him and James as far as song writing goes, theres a reason both names are on every song since the beginning
These two men know how to write a song. This is one of the best Metallica songs ever recorded. And you guys did it post 50 years of age. How does it fucking feel? Because it feels amazing as a fan!! \m/
i love the last 2 mins of this song so much. such simple licks kirk is doing but harmonically they sound amazing and that extra 2/4 bar every now and again is so perfectly placed.
Not a Metallica fan, but was really pleasantly surprised when I saw Kirk at 10:30 talking about wanting to play "Greeny". So glad that that piece of history is out of collection vaults and back to being heard again by millions of people.
4:23 - 6:30 I LOVE this, it really shows the growth of James and Lars since 'St. Anger.' Lars pointing out a part doesn't sound good dynamically, and instead of to force something like he used to, he shows James the part and says "maybe I can do something better or maybe you do something better." James hears him out, respects his input, but also mentions how he likes what the guitars are doing, Lars agrees and decides that HE needs to change up the part so it sounds good. They met in the middle and made a GREAT part of the song 🤘

To be honest if you look at the songs on this album and just listen to how good they actually are, they will be some of Metallicas historically classic songs like fade to black. Spit Out the Bone is the Master of Puppets of this album in my opinion.
one of the best & most complete songs off the new record. Seems like an awesome live song. Also whether or not you think Lars is a good drummer or not he sure has a knack for making/developing songs.
God tier song and stands up with the best in the rest of their entire catalogue. Amazing seeing it being put together. “Hello Darkness / Say Goodbye” gives me chills every time I hear this song 🤘
FrozenFire757 True. But at least the Kill em all solos were somewhat good. Most of the solos on this album are ass. Few good ones like in Spit and Halo i'll admit.
Nicole S They had a jumper/sweater at Christmas called: The Sweater That Should not Be. So if they did this then I thought that the name I suggested wasn't a bad idea because they had already used a song name as a sort of a joke
I was born in ‘89 and Metallica has been with me the entire time. They feel more like a family rather than just a band, and I sure as shit dread the day they won’t be around.

funny everyone shitting on lars but this video alone proves how good of a songwriter he is. every cool part of halo on fire seems to have come from a suggestion he made to change something that made an otherwise pretty boring song
Can someone compile all these videos into one long one so we can have a "The Making of Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" documentary type thing? I would love to watch that.
This has been my favorite one to watch yet! Love the outro of this song and it is cool to see James talk about some older songs that inspired it. Very very cool!

I love these making of vids so much. The best part is when you can see some of the best known parts of the song being born in the moment through their ideas on the spot. Like when Lars has the idea for the big crescendo crashing open, leading into the melodic clean part. It's sort of the opposite to what they're used to but such an effective idea.
