  • The Final Fantasy VII Remake made a number of changes to the original game's story. Because of this, fans have begun to wonder whether or not Aerith is going to live through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. I wanted to discuss that question by discussing whether having Aerith live would make for a better story or not.

      I was in the no changes camp till recently. But after replaying OG and seeing that AC completly changed Zack, Cloud and Aerith, I changed my mind. Since og is a complete story, you can go wild tbh. If Sephiroths build up is gone and Aeriths death won't mean the same than hell yeah do it.
      For me if it's a cool game you can make Aerith live, be with Cloud and Tifa with Zack. Why not. Only make the game good.

      @@wmen48 I'm sure their interest is to make the story good, and the Final Fantasy franchise has ALOT of very good stories to tell. And yeah, i agree. FFVII OG was a complete story and we got to see what a tragic ending looks like. We got our childhoods scarred when we lost characters we loved, and we couldn't explain to our parents why we're crying and hurting on the inside because it sounded stupid. Many felt overwhelming regret at Aerith's fate and nowadays many forget that she's not a martyr or a suic*dal goddess with the greater good of the world in her mind. She has friends she loves, she also struggled to feel included and finds her bond with Cloud and co to be the best time of her life. She is afraid of death too and feels pain. She doesn't NEED to be sacrificed for the story to be amazing. I am all on board for a better ending for everyone, including Sephiroth. Because lets face it, in AC (which is supposed to be several years after OG), nobody wins. Humanity is extinct. Jenova is no more, but neither are humans. Literally everyone lost everything except maybe mother nature in a now abandoned world. Wouldn't really call that a good ending.

      @@MissusFail The way I see it, the remake trilogy seems to hint at the OG game as something that has already happened or will happen as in its either like a reset universe or smt like time travel. Its asking the question, if you had the chance to go back, would you change anything? To me, this is about aerith and Seph. Seph wants to avoid dying like before so that's the change he wants to make. For aerith, its a little less obvious but I have a feeling its to avoid AC as the final end of the story as in the end, humanity does just end up dying and her friends are alive but not as happy as can be. However, I do believe she thinks she must die in order for this to happen which explains all the lines about don't fall in love with me and thanks for trying. In the full version of NPTK, she even talks bout the burden she holds and how she wishes she didn't have to but must bear it to save cloud/her friends.
      I think purist would've always not accepted the remake as something as good as the OG, especially aerith's death because its basically impossible to recreate that gut-wrenching shock of her death. Best they could do was a make them question if it will happen which is what they did. Plus, this being a 1-to-1 remake has already been disproven since the first part came out, might as well go all the way. There's also the fact that the trilogy's tagline was defy fate and I think devs knew that we would think its about aerith's fate. To just subvert that and be like, "actually we're just avoid AC" is kinda mean spirited and does feel like cheap bait to engage older players who have wanted aerith to live since the 1st game. Plus to add all this stuff just to end up at the same conclusion, its kinda wasted.

    As an Aerith fan, my hype for the third game is gone if she dies in Rebirth... I'll just follow the story, but not gonna count down every day till release like I am currently doing for Rebirth. It just feels like it's a bad ending for Cloud, like he seems to not recover from her death. However, if they both die, it'll make the story even tragic, but at least I'm happy as Cloud will join Aerith and potentially Zack, never to be emotionally broken again.

    • @D3ltaFreedom
      @D3ltaFreedom 5 месяцев назад +2

      I'm sort of in the same boat, but I have really been analyzing and dissecting the Rebirth ending. It's very likely she survived in one world, but did not in another world. This is due to Square Enix developers telling the audience that every time the rainbow light is emitted during the story, it creates a new branch of reality, or a new portal to another world is created, or both. I' am just speculating, but I believe the lead developers at SE want to bring Aerith back to life, at least physically speaking, not just spiritually in the life stream. How does SE write future (cannon) FF7 story content, and have Aerith not be alive, but simultaneously, Cloud is happy and content? I suppose SE can do it, but it would contradict some of their other cannon novels. In AC, Cloud was very depressed in at least 70% (give/take) of the movie b/c he felt guilt for not saving Aerith, and that any potential romance with her is not possible. It was also left ambiguous if Cloud truly resolved his issues at the end of AC, he appeared happier, but it was very vague if he moved on.

    This is from someone who has beaten rebirth so:
    It seems like the devs wanted to kind of have their cake and eat it too with Aerith's death. As such the ending of rebirth is kind of....hard to decipher. From what they've given us in said chapters Aerith is both 'alive' and 'dead' with the reasoning being the newly established multiverse.
    She is alive in a separate timeline that seemingly only Cloud can access (the possibility of 'world' rejoining the main timeline permanently is questionable as 'world's collide and part' is a pretty persistent theme in rebirth) but she is still 'dead' in the main timeline due to destiny/fate. Granted this is just my interpretation of the events and I could just be wildly off base.

    • @kagekun1198
      @kagekun1198 5 месяцев назад +2

      Indeed. It's like they took out a huge literary loan and then gave us the fanservice scenes upfront like Zack and Cloud facing Sephiroth together and Cloud blocking that fateful blow but did not have the guts to commit to the brand new story such a scene would lead to. Instead, now they're playing it safe with the plot following the OG beat. But still, they left Part 3 stuck with the bill since in writing, you have to earn the scene. You have to explain how things led to it, and now Part 3 has a lot of explaining to do. I'm not sure the writers are up to the task if they made everything so unnecessarily convoluted and still not answering any questions two games in.

      There are now 2 Aerith's so 2 holy materia, Cloud uses both in his sword. Plus it's been slightly hinted with tiny details that OG Cloud is inside of Cloud like OG Aerith is inside of Remake Aerith.
      Aerith lives and Cloud uses both Holy in the buster sword in a sacrifical planet saving attack and ☠️ instead or the second Aerith ends up saving him before ☠️ by mako poison finishes him and ☠️ so him and Aerith can go home.

    • @itsdantaylor
      @itsdantaylor 6 месяцев назад +1

      Well it's kind of implied that killing her really didn't stop Holy from being summoned at the forgotten capital. I am not 100% sure if in the og game that it implied that the only reason holy was able to help was BECAUSE she was dead/in the life stream to facilitate that.

    • @MissusFail
      @MissusFail 3 месяца назад +3

      @@itsdantaylor Someone made a really good point about this subject a while ago. Aerith doesn't need to die. The only reason Holy doesn't work is because she summons it too late and the party (Cloud Red Barrett Tifa etc.) is also very late in killing Sephiroth. So now she has to convince the life stream to intervene and stop the meteor otherwise Holy wouldn't have stopped it. Now if you take into account the fact that Aerith has knowledge of the future and can potentially summon Holy way ahead of time, she doesn't need to be sacrificed to use the life stream to intervene. The fact that Zack Biggs Wedge all got saved "miraculously" when in reality it was Aerith who saved them, hints that she knows what she has to do or has some of OG memories with her.

    • @FenrirInFlowers
      @FenrirInFlowers Месяц назад +2

      Aerith doesn't need to die. There are Aerith's in some worlds who died, who could work from the lifestream, but if a living Aerith could summon Holy sooner through her prayers that could allow it to actually work correctly this time. Crisis Core also established an entire goddess in the lifestream, so Aerith could learn how to pray to Minerva for help in an emergency.
      Holy didn't even really save humanity. In 500 years, Red still shows up at the overgrown remains of Midgar with no signs of humanity left alive and what sounds like the ghostly echo of children laughing from the lifestream.
      It's not like death has meant diddly squat to Sephiroth. He comes back after Cloud killed him in Nibelheim using the robed men and Jenova. He comes back in Advent Children using the same trick and Cloud's memories. It's heavily implied in the Remake trilogy that there is a Sephiroth who has come back from even after that, influencing events in these games. Why is Aerith the only death that folks hold sacrosanct in the series? Especially when it looks like her death only delayed the end of humanity instead of stopping it.

      @@lightknight172 We got a few outcomes.
      First outcome: OG Cloud takes over Remake Cloud body and saves Aerith and later uses both sets of holy materia to stop Sephiroth in a sacrifical attack possibly being saved by the 2nd Aerith allowing us to get that art from Remake Art book of Cloud in AC get up walking to Aerith's house with Aerith in the house.
      Second outcome: is Zack ☠️ saving the planet with sacrifical attack.
      Third outcome: is one of the Aeriths' ☠️ but it's the 2nd one rather than the OG one who is in the Remake body because Cloud saves that one.
      4th outcome: they try to beat him like they did in AC with OG Cloud using his powers, with the gang backed by Shinra turks, and Cissne but it takes longer and does cost a few causalities and damage to multiple areas of the planet. However humanity and life survies. Hence still not sunshine and rainbows but happy because Cloud and Aerith get to go home.

    *My Perspective and Speculations*
    I was just thinking of it like this: When they created "remake" version it might meant to satisfy 'both worlds'. Those who where fans of Aerith still lost her life and those who want to see a different "canon" version of her able survive. In end i might think of it as Sq.Enix might cleverly make sure Aerith is still alive. Because there wouldnt be a "remake"(not remastered) if the outcome of Aerith tragedy did not change for those many heartfelt fans wanted too. It only be same as it was in FF7. So ofcourse so many fans DOES want to expect something different this time. Maybe Aerith will actually die in Clouds own memory. But when he wakes up(will not reveal when this event in the game or if its clash with Sephiroth and Aerith was successfully protected) she actually might still alive...there together with the party.
    As all incoming scenes of Aerith in Clouds memory even at start of this FF7 remakes was already shown it creates an understanding and build up for Aerith own tragedy in Clouds mind.
    And by the Cetra Ruins it will fall into places into Clouds mind. And thus in just this glimpse of future scenario that might happen Cloud will start to prepare before Cetra ruins and ensure that THAT event will not happen to Aerith again. A statement from Cloud entering Cetra Ruins or before Aerith Escape to go ahead of the party: "Aerith sacrificed her life for us. To save us and to save the planet. NOW it is out turn to SAVE Aerith to protect her from that tragic event itself. And with those statements there are possible outcomes. Aerith might still d** or someone else will d** for Aerith instead or Sephirot, knowing the outcome from his own downfall he wants to diverge from is actually to by going to Cetra ruins and stop the white Materia forming by Aerith and just let it happen and then different outcome of event will come from it that will satisfy Sephirot anyway and keep Sephiroth alive even later at end game. To not make the biggest mistake and achieve his goal he must let Aerith be alive. So even at the end. The ending we see in this FF7remake might not be the same as the old FF7. Spoilers alert and all of this comment is just speculation and guessing game: I think the real ending will be everyone is alive including Aerith in this REMAKE. And that Sephiroth still die in the end. And we see Nakaki above a prosperous city full crowded people after 1000years and at center of the midgard blooming square we see huge monument of statue from Midgard hero in the past who save this planet. We see the avalanche team including Tifa, Cloud, Aerith and other within square park.
    Or another possibilities Sephiroth is defeated but not d*ad yet meaning SqEnix might create a final extra additional disc exclusively only for this special ending that comes with everyone still alive til end(before the 1000year view from Nanaki perspective said above) and this time we see Cloud, Tifa and Aerith family visiting their heroic monument and statue that they lived a great life and made generation of ancestors after. Including Aerith granddaughters who can speak even with the life stream. Something like this...and finally i think with all tragedy thats happening in world specially the RU war on Ukraine just taking an example. With that in mind world could use even if its through entertainment something a more positive, breakthrough and hype of great and clever good ending that will satisfy both worlds. So in the end my bet here is that Aerith will still be alive with everyone. And that in this remake she finally have time to board(something she couldnt do in FF7 tragically passed in Cetra Ruins) the highwind and feel as soar above the sky true happiness.
    Thanks for your time.

    Yes. Aerith deserves an actual shot at life...Not as a magical person with a special fate and powers, but just a normal girl who can laugh, cry and get angry...and die of old age.
    She died like a person struggling with cancer but from a sword through the back. It would've been fine to showcase her voluntary sacrifice for the greater good, but the truth is they already revived her by making the remakes, for the obvious reason of having things happen differently this time around.
    What could be different in a new tomorrow with Aerith involved? There is only one game in the entire compilation that doesn't focus on the past, and that's DoC. Sephiroth's story isn't over; Lucrezia is still frozen and won't come out of her coma until she sees Sephiroth. Cloud's story isn't over; We still don't know why he was so strong in Nibelheim. We don't know who his dad was. Is Aerith's story over? Will she and Zack become supporting NPCs from now on? Is Aerith a glorified query bot? Tbh dead characters shouldn't speak, but she still does and will continue to talk to us after her death. She must have a place in the future to live.

    Her death is pivotal to both the themes of the story but also to her role in it. You could kill another character in her place but it would change both of these, thus breaking the story. And don't get me started on the idea of everyone living because that just misses the point altogether. Honestly, I was pretty shocked Remake revived so many of the characters who were supposed to die for the above reasons. But Aerith is pretty unique in terms of her relationship to the story and its themes.
    I'm baffled by how many people want her to live. It feels like people putting their personal ships and good feelings above the story itself. Taking her death out would be like taking Sephiroth out of the story.

Sakaguchi who lost his own mother really got that right, death comes when you least expect it. Now that scene isnt gonna have any impact on us again- so hopefully the Aeris from Zack timeline kind of arrives at ours - if sephiroth could jump his, why not them? and thus we can have her "death" without making some of the older fans mad (which im part of but isnt bothered by) and still do fanservice by adding her for a third game. I understand why some might want a happier outcome, especially in times when happiness is increasingly harder to find, but no, she shouldn't. Her death is essential to the story and themes of FFVII. It makes you face death and loss, something everyone will have to face in one time or another during their lives. But it also shows how it's OK to have self-doubt, to feel sorrow and the sense of powerlessness. And in the end, it shows how it's possible to get back up, leave the hurt behind and move on, keeping the memories with you. It's not a pleasant lesson, but an important one.
    As for making saving her an option, I think that wouldn't work either. Part of coping with death is the realization that sometimes things happen, and you just don't have control over it.

    The fact is, the remake is already fundamentally different from the original game in a way that isn't simply a cool expansion and fleshing out of what it was... and that sucks. Whispers ruined it, so it's no longer as good as it could have been. Who cares if she lives or dies? It no longer matters.

      @night172 I like the new elements which are natural extensions of the plot, such as Jessie or elaborations on established elements of the original narrative. I can even tolerate the inclusion of ideas and characters salvaged from the Compilation of FF7 games, dreadful in both gameplay and narrative as they all too often tended to be, if they're handled with care. What I really cannot abide is being told I'm getting one thing and instead getting some of the most insipid, wanky, and on-the-nose metafiction garbage I've ever seen jammed into something I was mistakenly holding out hope for.

    They already fucked up her death scene so who cares if she lives or dies anymore. I’m tired of people parroting the argument that the changes in remake are good cos we get a different story and not the same. But the reason FF7 was so good was cos it’s OG story and characters were beloved and timeless. If Lord of the Rings got remade in 20 years time and many major story and character moments were changed due to multiple timelines and time ghosts, would people be happy?

  • @tohur

    No she shouldn't. as heart wrenching it would be to go through that scene in a modern engine.. her death is what made 7 what it was and raised the stakes of the game once you had one of your in game love interest ripped right from you.. but will say if not Aerith someone just as important needs to die to have the same impact as the OG.. so If not Aerith it should be Tifa. And to all the people saying it won't have the same impact as the OG anyway due to the time between releases it will folks it will.. these games are going to be meant to be played in a single playthrough once the third game is released. So I suggest folks to play the games in order once the third game is coming close to release

    YES! They were heavily foreshadowing that saving Aerith 2 is Zack's top priority. Aerith 1 is dead and she has fulfilled her destiny as planet's savior but in world 2 her fate is open. Tifa, Barret and Nanaki are dead in world 2 so it is clear that it won't lead to AC unlike world 1.
    This is a world where the chains of destiny are broken. In world 1 the course of destiny was still fixed and it leads to AC.

    I actually think she should live. Because we've seen that worldline where she dies. My pet idea since getting into ff7 in general is a character swap. Characters who lived in the original die in the rewrite and vice versa. No where more obvious than the 4 characters with inverted fates: Cloud, Zack, Aerith, and Tifa.
    Now, I doubt it will ever go that far as to kill Cloud. We would need a very different game to really pull that off. But I totally could see them kill Tifa. I love Tifa. I do. Dearly. It would be a nail in my heart to kill her, but I think it would work.

    Here's my pitch:
    *Aerith and Sephiroth are the only ones who knows the whole story of the original.
    Throughout part 2, she is hesitant on what to do, but by the time they reach the Temple of the Ancients she has gained the resolve to repeat history and runs off alone to summon Holy to stop Meteor.
    This time at the end of the Temple of the Ancients, the rest of the party see the vision of the alternate timeline and the scene where Aerith dies. They vow to not let history repeat itself and to save her in this timeline.
    They chase her down and again and right as Sephiroth is about to kill her Zack jumps in and deflects the blow saving her.
    This forces Sephiroth to retreat and reconsider Meteor thus trying to find a different way to destroy the planet.*
    This way, the players get relive or view for the first time the beautiful and tragic scene of her death, but everyone also gets to move on in the game with her alive.

    Aeriths death sucked. I was very young when i first played ff7 and when i saw it happen, it definatly hurt in the feelz.
    Being older now I realise it needs to happen again. It was such a fundamental part of the story that propelled the rest of the characters forward. Im going to love playing through Rebirth but i will be very disappointed if she lives, as bad as that sounds.
    They can add to the story, flip whatever they want around and ill be happy with it. But if they change major parts around such as Aerith surviving, then it just wont feel the same.

      I’m completely ok with you downvoting the video. I just wanted to let you know that the image I used came from one of the trailers for the game that came out a few months ago during the game awards. An event that was watched by over 100 million people. So the company responsible for making the game was willing to put that same ‘spoiler’ image that I put in the thumbnail for my video out there for millions of people to watch. So I guess they felt like it wasn’t enough of a spoiler to hold back from putting out to the public to see.
      I suppose the title might be interpreted as a spoiler for the original game. But, I don’t say in the title that Aerith dies in the original game. That’s something you took away from the title because you know Aerith dies in the original game. I do mention Aerith’s death in the video. But I made sure to give a spoiler warning at the very beginning of the video. There are many videos on RUclips that very clearly refer to Aerith’s death in the title. Some from major gaming outlets. I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary or doing anything in bad faith. The point of thumbnail isn’t to spoil the original game. It’s meant to give people an idea of what the video is about. Which does in fact deal heavily with Aerith’s death.
