Wyatt Earp's Mescal Spring - Location of the 1882 Shootout with Bill Brocius and the Cowboy Gang

  • In 1881, Wyatt Earp, his two lawman brothers, and John "Doc" Holiday, engaged in a shoot out with four outlaws of the Cowboy gang. When the smoke cleared, three of five Cowboys were dead, and the other two retreated.
Not long after the shootout at the OK Corral, Wyatt's brother, Morgan, was assassinated by an unknown gunman. The death of Wyatt's brother turned into the famous Vendetta Ride.
Seeking vengeance for his family's loss, Wyatt Earp and a band of fellow lawmen took to the trails of Southern Arizona bent on killing the Cowboys. While riding up a wash on the East side of the Whetstone Mountains, the Earp Posse engaged a group of Cowboys.
Whether it was an accident or an ambush led by Curly Bill Brocius, the gunfight ended Brocius' life, as well as another of his gang. While the OK Corral is still famous for the well known gun battle that took place there, the Mescal Spring shootout is definitely a memorable part of Old West history.
This video explores Mescal Spring and the wash where Wyatt Earp's posse and a handful of the Cowboy outlaws fought for the last time. The desert landscape was different as there was more moisture 140 years ago.

The conflict happened at what Wyatt Earp called Iron Springs. Actually Mescal Springs today on maps.

First off, Bill Brocius did NOT survive the gunfight, he wasn't even there. The only one that survived on the cowboy's faction, was Ike Clanton. so right off the bat, I have to question this guy's historical accuracy. Also, most people familiar with the gunfight know it didn't take place at the OK corral. Most historians, as well as others who simply like to stick to the facts, don't call it the gunfight at the OK corral. There is, what I think, is a much more likely video called, "How Wyatt Earp murdered Bill Brocius" that I believe is more likely the actual location.

My apologies, sir. I live in the area and was told that's where the springs were at. It was more of an adventure and it was the gunfight in which Wyatt Earp was nearly hit with a bullet that went through his duster coat. I went to Tombstone. I did some vague research. I read the story and realized this landmark was a quarter mile from my house. It was really about the excitement of being at Iron Springs. I do wish I knew about the marker, as I would have hiked to that point and told the story a bit differently.
Either way, it's still cool to have walked up the trail that Wyatt Earp walked to whatever gun fight it was. This was not the gunfight at the OK Corral. It was one of the gunfights between the Cowboys and the Earps. That's good enough for me.

I’ve seen the OP’s reply, and that’s cool, and this video can be viewed with that filter in place. I would add for accuracy sake, that Earp didn’t save Brocius from a mob. I believe the OP has CBB confused with the incident at Charleston, the Tombstone (in the street in front of Vogan’s Alley and Saloon (where James Earp was a bartender at one time) with Johnny Behind-The-Deuce.

Billy Claiborne also survived the gunfight at the OK Corral (or, rather, Fly's Photography studio). But it could be argued that he didn't qualify as a combatant because he ran away so early in the fight and in the opposite direction. He didn't even verbally engage the Earps and Doc Holliday for a moment as did the unarmed but also cowardly Ike Clanton.

Interesting video. The Kevin Costner version of this event bore no resemblance to reality. The Tombstone version was much closer.
In 1887 there was a major earthquake centered in Sonora, Mexico, and it had some extreme effects on this part of Arizona. Most notably, most of the San Pedro River turned underground, leaving today's San Pedro a shadow of its former self.
I would postulate that the earthquake also cause this spring to dry up.
