That Mark V shines like a diamond!
I can identify with your appreciation of the Weatherby. As I probably mentioned before, since being a young child I was obsessed with having a Weatherby. When I finally was able to realize my dream it was a moment that I will always remember.
I’ve been very lucky! I now have four of them in my collection. They all hold a special place in my heart.
I was a young kid who read ballistic tables with a flashlight under the covers at night.
    It’s been a lifelong passion.

The old Weatherby rifles are truly exceptional. My favorite Weatherby caliber is the 257. But I like the 300 as well.

  • @8MM.PRC.HUNTER
    @8MM.PRC.HUNTER 4 месяца назад +4

Weatherby hasn't forgotten how to make a beautiful rifle. That MK V Deluxe looks the same it has for decades - which is to say gorgeous. They've always used the #2 contour bbl for the 340, the same as for the 300, except in the Accumark which has a #3 contour bbl in all calibers. The Trigger Tech should be a huge improvement over the older triggers like my Mark V's had. In the Leupold scope lines the VX5HD is what most people want these days but the VX3HD's are rated for more eye relief, at least at the lower powers. I had a Vari X III 1.75x6-32mm on my 338 RUM and it worked great for hunting but I like more magnification these days. I would want as close to four inches as possible (or more) of eye relief on that 340. But since you have the Accubrake I wouldn't be as concerned about it. The VX5HD 3.5x15-44mm would probably be the best all round scope but any of the Leupolds from VX3HD on the low end to the VX6's on the high end would be great. Maybe my wife will let me build my dream rifle if I GAIN 45 lbs, lol!

It’s only right that a USA made rifle carry a USA scope🙌 I have been using Leupold scopes over 60 years and the only scope I buy new! Nightforce are great too but not for hunting because of the weight! I have owned just about every model of Leupold scope and wouldn’t think twice about putting that brand on my Weatherby rifle!

Is beautiful. That sporter barrel may show it's con's at the range but in the field it's a pro. It is a heavy rifle to slug around the hunting grounds where you have absolutely no concern with the accuracy when the barrel is heating up after a few shots, but only the accuracy you get with that one coldbore shot.

    That rifle is beautiful!
    I have 2 mk5 deluxe's, and they are awesome!
    I bought a used 300 and a new 378 about 12 years ago.
I really need one of the Sheridan ones.
Don't be scared to hunt deer with it either.
I've shot deer and antelope with my 378, and quite a few with my CZ 375H&H, and they work as great as anything.
I think the 340 is probably the most beautiful cartridge in the lineup and one I wish I had.
I wouldn't worry too much about the barrel size at this point.
The first group I shot with my 6.5rpm #1 contour was half an inch with the cheapest hornady interlock ammo. I was shocked.
I didn't realize a 300wby vanguard had to be loaded shorter.
Id say get the cheapest leupold you can so we can start seeing some shooting lol.
You probably should save up for a vx3 that's not too big, and see if the custom shop can make you one with a gloss finish.

Wow, nicely done with the weight and you earned that beautiful rifle. Don't worry about the sporter barrell, just follow WBY break in procedures and you will be fine. I still have my first MK5 looks almost as good as yours and I purchased it around 1975. I put a bore scorpe down the barrel last year and I shoot the gun at least one time a year and believe it or not the lands and throat still look new. However I shoot three shots with all my WBYS and stop and clean the barrel, this cools down the barrel and believe it or not WBYS shoot great cool and clean. Check out Eric Cortina and why he cleans his barrels and Hornady has a few Podcasts on the importance of cleaning your rifles. I know alot of people think they need a dirty gun to shoot straight. IN my experience especially with a WBY that is not true. Call WBY and discuss this with them they are always happy to talk with customers.Get a bore scope and keep the carbon and copper out of that barrel and that gun will shoot straight and last a life time, again WOW what a treasure.

It truly is a gorgeous rifle. I’ve always wanted a 340 Weatherby Magnum in a Mark V as well. I was introduced to the 340 Weatherby in 1996 by a friend that had one in, I believe the Mark V Deluxe as well. It knocked elk on their ass, as I saw firsthand. I was in awe of power and reach. I have two Weatherby Mark V’s. One in an AccuMark 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum that is brand new never fired. The other is brand new as well, in a 257 Weatherby Mark V Kreiger Custom Rifle. I’m looking to sell the 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum Mark V AccuMark. I’d rather have the 300 Weatherby Magnum in a Mark V. If you know of anyone looking to buy one, let me know. As usual, I love your videos and content. I agree that your new rifle will look good topped with a Leupold scope. Congrats on the weight loss as well.

    VX-6 HD 2-12x42
Get the glass it deserves !
That 2x is super handy for closer & wooded shooting... Especially if you were ever thinking of going after a big bear or something...
12x is enough to shoot a whitetail or muley let alone an elk @ 400 yards...
More magnification is great, but losing the low end really takes away from the versatility.
2-12 is the way to go
Plus, generally speaking lower power = lower weight... The mark 5 deluxe is already not the skinniest kid on the block. So it might be a good thing to keep it under 10.5 - 11 pounds
8.25lbs bare unloaded... Say 8.5 loaded
Scope is 1.25lbs say rings are say 0.25lbs
That's 10lbs (which isn't the worst thing considering you got yourself a .33 cal ''super" magnum. 10lbs is warranted (never shot a 340wby, but I did shoot a 338 RUM in a 700 XCR platform... Which is close-ish. It felt like it had more recoil than anything else I've shot, 300 WBY or 375 H&H.
Off note : the model 70 Safari in 375 H&H was a kitten compared to the 338 RUM in that XCR, but the XCR was like 3lbs lighter, both without a brake... Hope the brake works well !
    Good luck !! It's a beautiful rifle

  • @tacticalmattfoley

Congrats man!!! That is awesome and very rewarding on both ends. A mark V Deluxe and the Browning White Gold are arguably the best looking rifles on the market. Out of Leupold I would definitely go with the VX5HD 3-15x44 with the firedot. Arguably my favorite scope I own just to pricey to put on everyday rifles. That’s what’s on my 257 Mark V and it’s a killer setup

Weatherby Mark V 300 German 1:12 twist slim barrel kleingunther muzzle break Talley 20 moa pic rail Leipold Mark VI TMR Seekens rings. Tack driver Nosler 180 Accubond IMR 7828 load. Weatherby Mark V 340 has medium weight factory barrel with Wby muzzle brake. Same base and use Leupold Mark V HD 3-18 CCH reticle. Older Vari-X III that came with the rifle had objective lens housing bent from recoil. Invest in quality mounts and rings in your 340. Blessed are the Muzzle Brakes....Amen

Nice rifle! My only gripe would be the bordered checkering. As a custom rifle maker the bordered checkering is an eyesore, I much prefer borderless checkering because it shows the skill of the craftsman. Your checkering is most likely cut with a machine, good French Walnut needs to be enhanced with borderless checkering. I wouldn’t worry much about the barrel as much as I would about the bedding. The bedding is where stability starts and the barrel must float enough to not vibrate against the stock when it whips as the bullet travels down the barrel. If you are going to go with a Leupold I’d say a 5 or 6HD with a 44mm objective would look great and be the most versatile. Nice rifle all in all.

Congratulations, a older gloss finish Leupold would look great on it. And the mark V is a hunting rifle at it’s core, it’s carried far more then it’s fired, the quality that matter’s is the cold bore shot is the most accurate ( and it helps if any follow up shots hit the same place) 😂. Considering where you live I’m already expecting a bull elk hunt video this coming season.

I'm proud of you man, that's definitely a reward worth the work. I miss my 300 weatherby mkv stainless accumark. I had to sell it and get a win mag because I wasn't reloading at the time. It was just to blasted expensive at the time.
For glass go big or go home, don't put cheap glass on that please 😅
Editing to say that the bolts on these guns are creme de la creme. Once you have owned one everything after it feels cheap and chinsy. Such a smooth and crisp operation 👌🏾
Mine was made in 2008 so I don't know if it was a Japanese or German or American made piece of steel. Either way they are almost like artwork.

@ReloadingWeatherby yeah upon further reading it would have to have been made pre 90's to he german or Japanese made 🤣
Either way I love the mkV platform.

Can’t wait to watch it spank your 7mm prc but your right on the barrel contour I would try a 3 shot group back to back firing to see as a baseline then try waiting 3-5 minutes between shots use factory ammo to see if accuracy increases from waiting if it does I would do my load development the same way if it’s negligible fire away.

Congratulations on your weight loss - imagine, you were carrying around the equivalent weight of a car battery with every step prior to your change in lifestyle.
You will never regret a 340 Weatherby. I know you like the idea of a Leupold, but consider a Steiner Predator 8 with the 3x - 24x BDC.

Absolutely beautiful, congratulations! Like I said in the chat get some kind of a chamber cooler and you'll cool that barrel off quickly. The 340 is such an under rated round and a powerhouse. I'm not sure about Leupold's durability these days but don't know what else to suggest though. Nightforce 3-10x42 SHV on a rail maybe? Getting some durable scope mounts will be a must too. Hopefully it won't be too long until you are able to get out and shoot that beauty!

The camera never picks up all the figure in the wood. I just got one for my birthday but in a 6.5-300. These rifles are sure beautiful. I have always thought the 340 is interesting. Cant wait to see how it shoots.

@@ReloadingWeatherby Yes I have, I just tried some factory 140 grain interlocks and my rifle didnt like them. They were also going 200 FPS slower then advertised, Probably has something to do with the accuracy as most overbore cartridges shoot best near maximum pressures. Ill start loading for it in the next couple weeks
