    Just to let you guys know, being a pagan isn't a bad thing, and not all of us Nordic Pagans are racist or evil. We get a bad rap because of Stephen McNallen and those black metal bands, and people like them, and the Odinists. This is, of course, coming from someone who also likes Black Metal. But, being a Nordic Pagan doesn't make you racist or evil any more than being a Christian makes you part of the KKK.

Those racist pagans are just one of many branches within paganism and most of us want nothing to do with them. I remember reading an arghoslent interview in which a member said in response to allegations of “racism” something to the affect of: “yes our lyrics deal with tragic and negative themes, death metal is negative”
    I found this pretty insightful, very strange to me how desecrating christianity, describing all sorts of horrific mutilations of innocence and hateful violent sentiments are totally acceptable within the genre, but god forbid you touch anything racial? not even to mention that their lyrics are more historical portraits than they are political statements

    The funny thing is there’s metal bands (or any other genre of music) that don’t have any obvious anti Semitic or racist lyrics/themes and they personally feel that way but you’d never know because we just assume they’re good people if their music doesn’t have that direct message.
    The fact is your favorite band probably has members you’d never agree with on a political scale and sometimes it’s best to separate that entirely and just enjoy the music.
    But in that same breathe there have been bands I’ve stopped listening to because it felt weird listening to, such as As I Lay Dying because the singer hired a guy to kill his wife, went through with his jail sentence and is back with the band making music.

      Curious because you mentioned Revenge, is it conclusive that they’re a NS band? From what I could gather they could just be edge lords but any info I have on them is from opinions on Reddit.
      I feel like if they’ve been a band for 20 years and are on Season of Mist records then something would have come out by now and I don’t see them in any NSBM lists online.

      For me, it comes down to whether I can think about the music without thinking of tragic things. I’m lucky enough not to have grown up with bands like As I Lay Dying or Lostprophets, so I won’t start listening now. I stayed away from Falling In Reverse because I’d heard bad things about Ronnie Radke, but I gave them a chance after seeing Finn Mckenty’s more flattering, though honest, video about him. Now I can listen to his stuff guilt-free. Granted, I might stop if he turned out to be a white supremacist. That’s almost as morally repugnant as murder or child molestation, and you can bet that he’d include that sort of thing in his lyrics given how revealing his current ones are.

    • @HeadbangingGlory
      @HeadbangingGlory Год назад +5

      The most I could find is that they once sold a shirt that looked like something you’d see a neo nazi wear (a wolf head and lighting bolt that looked like something the SS wore)
      That might have been at a time where one of the members who was later no longer part of the band designed that shirt and haven’t made anything like that.
      Though honestly the closest I could see people raising eyebrows is from their album art of the skull on Stike.Smother.Dehumanize because the skull is positioned similar to how the skulls on SS officers had it on their uniform.
      But if we’re going to analyze skulls on album art on so many bands it would be silly to suggest they’re all NS.

      from what I've seen as a metal fan since the early 90's a large amount of people who gravitate towards metal are atheists. While its not like that demographic is immune to having bigoted thoughts, its worth noting that a founding point one must confess adherence to in order to become a member of most white supremecist organizations is to claim to be a white protestant. Its from the bible where they get their hate, and a large amount of the metal community do not subscribe to that shit. Certain bands give a metal version of what is basically country music to inner city wannabees instead of inbred hicks with MAGA stickers. Join my white ass at a concert and have fun my friend. You'll be in much safer company than at a country festival for sure.

      That’s why it’s a dumb ass fools paradise and that’s why racism exists in white majority music
      Critical theory and Hegelian dialectic only works if you suspend objectivity and logic and just look for a boogieman “oppressor” to constantly shit-talk. Like white ppl. Nothing good comes from the type of woke that Cultural Marxists have fomented in America. It’s only meant to tear down and destroy.
      Racism/white supremacy is an answer to this kind of society we have been brought up in. It wouldn’t be nearly as much of a problem if critical theory didn’t exist. And there weren’t active saboteurs trying to destroy America from within through bad faith discourse.

Also, none of those "far right" individuals you pictured have anything to do with white supremacy or racist metal bands in the first place, so I don't know why they were included in your video, unless you just want people to visually associate them with that type of evil, which is a pretty pathetic attempt at brainwashing lmao.

For instance, even though the types of people who listen to Pantera are probably more racist than average, I’m willing to take Phil at is word that his Nazi salute was just him trying to be edgy while he was drunk and pissed off. He hasn’t really backed it up with more Nazi shit or a coherent white supremacist ideology, at least as far as I know. Also, I’m willing to bet that a lot of artists fall into a gray area where they don’t even realize how much their adoption of edgy aesthetics is turning them on to hateful ideas. It doesn’t make it all okay, though. People need to read the room, create a fun environment for everyone, and make sure the hidden message in their humor isn’t watered-down Nazism.

      One very obvious difference: shock imagery - very early Sepultura wearing swastikas. Theatricity of 15 years old kids who aimed to appear as dark and evil during the mid 80s while playing raw proto black/death metal on their first LP. They had very fictional, entertaining and horror context, no political aspirations yet. Soon as they were growing and started to get more realistic and political they appeared as very left-wing.
      Pantera - racist dog whistles almost entire career. Drunk 50+ old man acting edgy and sieg heiling and shouting white power on stage is just dog whistling, alt right type racism. And embarrassing scene to see, also.

      The problem with trying to be edgy or shocking by using that kind of imagery and themes is that you end up normalizing the same shit the actual fascists are pushing for, so you are helping them regardless of your intention.

    Nokturnal Mortum is a really unique case that really shows how difficult it can be to truly judge the appropriate course of action with bands like them. Musically speaking, they are one of my favorite bands and I am happy that they have done away with their problematic themes and beliefs in their music. However, there's always the remaining issue with them: they still play NS festivals like Asgardschrei. Now I write this comment as someone who does not have any actual knowledge of the reasoning. But asking, "why would a band who has changed their ways and left their racist and antisemitic ways behind still play at festivals like that?" is a very fair question to ask. Are they insincere? Are these the only festivals they can play? The latter question is the most intriguing to me. It is entirely possible they still play these festivals because it's difficult to get gigs outside of NS festivals like Asgardschrei or non political festivals that do host NS bands like Steelfest. In the US, we had a tour with Taake cancelled in 2018 due to threats of violence from protesters because the singer pulled a Sex Pistols-like provocation stunt on stage in 2007 in Germany. Surely if Nokturnal Mortum, considering their past, would face similar or even worse backlash if they were to try to tour here or play a festival like Maryland Deathfest. Major festivals like Wacken, Hellfest, etc would likely not touch a band like them because of their past so they are likely fairly limited in what festivals they can play and where they can tour. They can play problematic festivals or get protested into oblivion resulting in cancellations. So it raises an interesting question: what is the appropriate way to respond to bands with problematic pasts? I don't know the answer to this. There's a part of me that thinks if they were given a chance to tour and play these major festivals, they likely wouldn't play these NS festivals. Then there's another part of me that doesn't want the floodgates to open where bands like Goatmoon and other unapologetic NS bands could creep into the major festival and touring circuits. These are my thoughts and unfortunately I feel like there's no good answer here.

    • @stoneflower5126
      @stoneflower5126  Год назад +4

      I think as far as festivals are concerned, given the financial necessity for bands to your and play gigs etc, I think if a previously problematic band shows appropriate penance for their past, it should be a case by case basis of slowly reinstating them at those major festivals. In NKs case, you might be right, where else can they play? They might need better options to properly disengage with that fanbase. It's a tough one!

    • @paravan2000
      @paravan2000 Год назад

      Bands with NS past are still followed by nazi fans, so that's why normal metal festivals would never invite them.

    • @sevenfjell118
      @sevenfjell118 Год назад +2

      @@stoneflower5126 For sure. My main concern is the idea of a proper penance is so subjective. I like the idea of it in theory but what is a proper penance? And with that concept being so subjective, would a proper penance that would pass both yours and my standards even make a difference? As a fairly left-leaning person myself, my biggest concern is that bands and venues have faced protests, threats of violence, last-minute event changes, and cancellations for less than Nokturnal Mortum's past. Bands like Taake, Akhlys, Horna, and Mgla come to mind when I say that. Taake has the distasteful (and illegal) provocation stunt in Germany and the other three are primarily association controversies even though the bands themselves are not NS and not political. So for me it's a matter of what we know versus what we hope. We know bands like NM will get protested out of a lot of places before they even arrive and we know this has happened to bands who have never been NSBM bands. What we hope is something can take place that will redeem bands like NM to a point where they can break free from their current self-imposed limitations. I would argue that based on what we know, it likely wouldn't matter what they do and it will always be the case. Unfortunately I think they are too pigeonholed at this point. At best, they continue to evolve as people and at worst their limitations take them back to being what they once were.

      In my opinion, strategically it might only make sense to dissolve and re-form and re-name. It may not immediately solve a publicity problem, but might help the sincerity problem if a band is in fact simply trapped by their past.
      This only applies to bands with members who have genuinely changed after a confirmed/outspoken NS past though and makes no sense for bands that are more adjacently controversial.

I enjoy disma's releases with Craig pillard still even though he's an asshole. People online love to put others in a box in an attempt to portray themselves as a beacon of morality and virtue, but people are complicated and there's plenty of "non racist" artists who are bad people in a completely different aspect of their humanity. Sometimes bad people make good art, and it's ok to enjoy that art to a degree. Probably not in your best interest to give them your money or boost their reach at all, but good riffs are good riffs.
    On another note, Lots of "metal" guys have also said really dumb racist shit as teenagers for shock value and didn't necessarily believe in it, most of us who existed before social media and grew up in less progressive regions did (myself included), so when a grown adult in the metal scene suddenly catches flack for dirt that was dug up on them I hesitate to banish them from the world. Nobody is squeaky clean and most white 12 year Olds have said atleast a few slurs in their online chats.
    Then again I still find the humor in a band like anal cunt so maybe I'm just a dumbass. Regardless of what you do or don't find humorous, I fully believe there is a certain way you should present yourself when in public, it's ok to have a fucked up sense of humor but you probably shouldn't try to be funny unless the person next to you is consenting to it, or you might just provide them with your own character assassination

For example racist punk was unfortunately a larger subset of a subset, but stores that carried them kept them in the back and charged a arm and a leg for them. However if people who are not racist listen to there music and talk about them in a favorable light even if only of their musical skills. This will lead some young kid to get their album cause he has heard good things about them. Though he isn't a racist the worms are in his brain and if he is the right type of kid "at risk" then something happens and he becomes a racist, likely a violent racist.

      There are quite a few issues with that initial presumption.
      Expecting that pretty much derives from the western world taking on American cultural norms/conceptions, as the Americans have the whole southern border thing with Spanish speakers - approx 90% of whom are very apparently nonwhite. It is also worth factoring in that the us, being a foundationally WASP country, inherited many of the national & theological rivalries of England - and from the Cath/Prod wars through the Armada through Imperial rivalries, the Spanish were right up there on Englands S***list. So the US inherits this and then the majority of the spanish speakers they're dealing with are mixed Mesoamericans to boot.
      Under the Spanish and Portuguese Empires, the Casta System was the Law, and this caste system held European born whites at the top of the pile with Whites born in the Americas next up, right the way through the assorted types and mixes.
      This legacy persisted in south America beyond the European Empires.
      Another of the problems with the presumption is that even when taking an overtly antiracist stance, those of wasp countries still tend to retain the specifically wasp view of what constituted white - which, surprise surprise, the wasp was the pinnacle of. It probably sounds strange for them to hear that Spain and Portugal practiced WS also. But they absolutely did- and even in the American South, the French/Spanish Criollo who initially did butt heads with their wasp counterparts of the planter/trading-in-humans class, all joined together and the criollos naturalised, bc of the haitian revolution.
      In some ways there is more insistence on the Spanish being distinct from other Europeans now than then, though oddly it tends to be precisely those looking to wield it to make a point.
      Same goes with the irish and italians, who simply would not have even been permitted to migrate and Naturalize in such large numbers as they did if they weren't considered basicallywhites (just take a look at the laws of the time, and the plenty of cases of other peoples' paths to naturalisation being rejected).
      So yeah, its way more complex than folks from Anglo countries tend to take for granted, and it can seem a bit strange to others when Anglos unwittingly use a standard of protestant-germanism to mean 'the realwhites'

    Interesting video. Here my view:
    In the 50 years I’ve been around, most certainly have things slipped my mouth that I wouldn’t say like that anymore. Importance is to learn from the past.
    I know from Ian’s mouth that B+H was formed because the NF skimmed all the profits from record sales and he had enough off it (that’s just as a little added info)
    Now, politics and racism, is something you find a fair amount of in black metal. 99% of the time you can’t understand the lyrics so it just turns into a bombastic wallof sound. Why exactly these topics are so evil while it’s ok to sing about rape and murder is beyond me and I won’t judge that. Fact is, it’s extremely provocative. Even members of the Sex Pistols have been seen with swastikas to provoke. So there’s that issue as well. Is it simply Provokation?
    Certainly there are quite a lot who hold those beliefs far beyond the music and that’s their choice/problem. To me, there are bands that sound like shit and bands I like. I don’t even favor genres but rather pick out of the mass what sounds good to me. Aside from very few exceptions I don’t even pay attention to lyrics but rather take it in as a whole piece of “artwork”. We also need to look into what is considered racist these days, that wasn’t 20 years ago. I’m also not a believer that racism and anti semitism are the same thing nor should they be used in the same context.
    In the end I go by the adage “you do you”. Music hasn’t made me a rapist, better lover, racist or anything else. To think it does goes against everything that Dee Snyder fought for in court.

I do find however that we swing the racism bat way too much, and much of it is due to the way our media is set up. As a political instrument. That has been developing since the mid 1930.

      I think singing about murder gets a pass because it’s almost always understood to be a dark, edgy fantasy, not reflective of anyone’s actual beliefs. When things get borderline racist or very cartoonishly racist, it’s hard to say whether it’s sincerely promoting racism, accidentally doing so, or not doing so at all. In the case of the bands explored in this video, it’s abundantly clear how racist they are, so you can’t even argue that they’re just being edgy.
      I don’t care as much about financially supporting racists if it’s for something that has nothing to do with their personal beliefs, but these bands all expressed racism in their music, and they were usually involved with white supremacist organizations that their music-earned dollars would be going to. In that case, even if I could overlook their music, I would refuse to buy merchandise and tickets from them, pirate their music whenever possible, and only introduce people to them with a disclaimer that their lyrics were racist. Hell, I wouldn’t introduce that many people to them in general for fear of being judged. That’s what they deserve, at least until they attempt to atone for their words and actions.

      Yeah see the problem with that is that the Sex Pistols are well documented pieces of shit, regardless if they’re actually neoNazis they’re still reactionaries. Also a lot of those bands that sing about rape and murder usually aren’t raping and/or murdering people, while bands that sing about racism are usually actively racist. although I do have a big fucking problem with the misogyny of slamming brutal death and pornogrind etc etc. i will admit that sometimes I listen to some Mayhem albums, but so far I’ve been able to very easily avoid most reactionary and racist works other than like maybe Dying Fetus, and the songs I listen to by them are usually just about beating people up

    I don't really care about all this stuff personally. Like, people will listen to death/black metal, lirics about mass rape, murder, satanism, anti christianity and torture and not bat an eye, but will suddenly get their panties on a twist when the song talks about just killing one specific group of people or insults judaism instead of christianity or supporting fascism/national socialism when there are bands which promote communism or even stalinism, which are ideologies which arguably caused even more death and suffering than nazis and nobody cares. Nobody will care when you announce yourself as a fan of RABM, but say you like NSBM or have a patch of a ""problematic" band and you'll be instantly be harassed or even actually assaulted in a concert. I'm personally a devout catholic and don't really care when like 90% of all black metal bands insult my religion, why is it suddenly bad when songs talk bad against judaism/islam?
    I can sort of understand being against bands when members actually commit crimes, like with Dissection or Burzum, to just name some of the most notable one, but lyrics, album covers and edgy interviews on shitty zines that no one reads just seem like such stupid things to fixate on. Most of the time you can't even make out what the guy is even singing about and you have to actively go and read the lyrics to even realize that the song is "problematic", I guess it would be more understandable if clean vocals were used, but that's not the case.
    I don't really care about people deciding to not support a band financially, everyone does whatever he wants with his money, but going to the trouble of harassing people on shows, rallying up to cancel shows, doing bomb threats, and going on witch hunts online just seems ridiculous to me. If anything I just think it helps the bands and makes their stuff seem cooler as it's now "edgy and prohibited" and maybe even radicalizes people on the middle which may see the lefts attempt at censorship as a bigger problem than the bands ideologies.
