Driven- 2019 Honda Insight Touring Car Review

  • In 1999 the Honda Insight was an odd looking machine while the Toyota Prius was indistinguishable from an ordinary Japanese budget sedan. Now the roles have reversed. Tom Voelk reviews the third generation Insight and finds Honda has built a refined efficient hybrid with lots to like, and a quirk or two left in.

    Selectable regen makes sense. Not everyone wants that much braking when they lift off. It's weird until you get used to it. But why oh WHY would it reset at every stoplight?
    And Sport Mode locks in maximum regen? WTF?
    I sense opportunity for aftermarket tuners here.

    I am not really a hybrid fan, but the newest Insight is far better looking than the newest Accord. The seem very similar in size. Honda was STUPID to downsize its engines in all Accord versions. Even if V6 interest was very low for the Accord, Honda should have just left the 2.4 liter 4 as it was.

    Three thoughts:
    1) Why Honda went with a fastback profile, without adding the utility of a fastback hatch, is beyond me
    2) The regen paddle quibble is annoying just to hear you talk about
    3) This is still a very nice small car and proof that automakers can hit aggressive MPG requirements without sacrificing much at all

    • @marcob1729
      @marcob1729 6 лет назад

      did you listen to how the paddles react? They reset when you come to a stop. Also regen paddles do not equal transmission paddles. Consumers expect differently. It's not a good implementation

    • @marcob1729
      @marcob1729 6 лет назад +2

      Because on almost all hybrids, the paddles initiate regen braking. Tom mentioned the oddity for a reason. Have you driven many hybrids or electrics? It's practically universal.
      Resetting when you stop is even sillier under your logic, because the paddles just increase or decrease the aggressiveness of regen when your foot is off the gas. Why would you want that to reset? It's as if, whenever you turn the radio off and back on again, the volume is not where you left it.

    • @stevewise1656
      @stevewise1656 6 лет назад +1

    Does anybody know how to effectively provide Honda with feedback over this car? I love it, but there are flaws that make me want to steer clear. Like missing features that the competition provides.. and bad decisions that some software could fix..
    It seems like an average buyer cannot communicate with Honda and get feedback.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  6 лет назад +1

      You can start here. I'm curious what your issues are.

    • @captmarko
      @captmarko 6 лет назад

      So for the software, Honda chose to dump fake engine noise (CVT engine noise) in sport mode, and sport mode is the only way to keep your chosen regenerative braking from resetting each time you stop. I would like to change these, software upgrade; no fake engine noise setting, regen level that sticks constantly even after braking, still chosen by the shifters if they have to include those.
      Features missing, the ventilated seats that Honda put in the concept pictures of the Insight's interior, they removed the feature during development, but Kia offers them in their hybrid model. I have noticed that the seats do not offer a lumbar adjustment (the lowly Civic apparently has this). Heated steering wheel is missing for Canada (Hyundai and Kia offer this feature on many of their cars whether they are premium or not). Wireless charging pad is missing, totally dropped the ball on this feature as it will be in many more cars in the future. Spare tires are missing in more and more cars, yet I applaud that they didn't modify the car platform and remove the spare wheel well, but I cannot add the spare as an option from Honda, must be aftermarket. For some reason Honda doesn't make their car stereos with a sound system company (I have not heard any official review over this compared to other competitors, its just odd. Anything more that is missing, seems to be something other makers offer in their mid sized sedans, so I understand missing rear passenger console vents, etc.
      I think it is important that features be offered that match competitors, even if you have "the good brand name." Thanks.

    • @captmarko
      @captmarko 6 лет назад

      I should mention that Canada gets 4 of the 7 colors offered in the USA, and yet they didn't allow me to buy the brighter of the two blues, the one I fell in love with on the Civic. It is disappointing the lack of colors offered here. Usually Honda avoids offering anything but black and white in the lower trims, whereas the USA gets most or all the colors on any trim. (much larger scale in the states, so it's understandable..)

    I like this car, but it is yet another of Honda's big misreads of the market. As you said Tom, no one wants sedans and those who do are generally conservative buyers who are less willing to spend money on a hybrid. This should have been a Honda Nero. You can put this in the same category as all of the other Insight models, the CR-Z, the Crosstour, the Element, and the 1st gen Ridgeline as a likeable but ultimately pretty significant misread of what the market wants.

    You state you do not know why honda did not make this a suv.....the better question is why it is a sedan and not a hatchback as HBs have as much room inside as most suvs, are more fun to drive and get better mileage.

      Well, crossovers are selling far better than hatchbacks and the whole point is to sell a lot of vehicles.

    Why do all Honda Insight reviews sound like a Honda commercial and why are all the reviews with a few exceptions done with the Touring model? I drive the 2019 EX and it's better featured than the LX and the LX and EX get better gas mileage. There are two things all reviews should mention, the lack of rear a/c vents and the lack of usb outlets.

    Toyota was the first auto manufacturer who invented the hybrid car in 1997. They have more knowledge in the hybrid systems. Honda is just trying to play copycat.

      Nope, Honda released the Insight a year before the Prius. As for Honda playing "copycat," please elaborate.

      Emin Marookian Do your research lol. Toyota made the first Hybrid car in the late 1990s. Key word is “first.” Honda failed at hybrid vehicles in the past while Toyota has been the number one automaker for hybrid vehicles. Next time I suggest you research before looking dumb.

      A. The Prius is not the first hybrid ever invented. One of the first production hybrids was a car called the Owen Magnetic which came out in 1915. The only reason why Toyota gets credit for inventing the first mass market hybrid was because the Owen Magnetic was an expensive luxury car that very few people bought.
      B. It is true that Toyota did introduce the Prius before the Insight.
      C. Honda however was the first to introduce a hybrid to the US market. The Prius first came out in Japan in 1997. The US didn’t get the Prius until 2000. The Honda Insight came out a few months before the Prius.
      D. If you want to get real technical Ferdinand Porsche, inventor the VW Beetle, was the inventor of the first hybrid vehicle in 1900. His car however never went into production.
      So in this case everyone is technically correct.

    Just another cookie-cutter boring looking vehicle. Prius has it beat with looks. I want a car that looks interesting and different, not one that is identical to every other sedan out there that screams "old man driving".

    So, Insight Touring is more than $10k less than Accord Hybrid Touring? Seems like great value. Yes?

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  6 лет назад +2

      In the same trim Insight is about $7,000 less. But it's worth a look if you don't have tall friends riding in the back.

      Driven Car Reviews making sure my “tall friends” are comfortable is hardly worth a 7k difference not to mention by all accounts the Ex version is the superior trim package considering what is included and it’s better mpg. Which would put the price at a 10k difference.
