Great video, it made me want to tinker with the Appearance settings again. Also, I didn't know that was the kind of thing KWin scripts could do, I love how KDE has all these possibilities for customization.
I just made the switch from Windows 7 to Kubuntu about a month ago and your video came at just the right time for me. Keep it up 👍
Glad to hear you found it so useful! I also didn’t realize how capable the KWin scripts are and some of the cool stuff that can be done until I started researching for the video.
I'm falling in love with linux. Just to have the possibility to personalize the OS like the way you want without having it just the way it is like Windows is a huge bonus point. And of course the privacy.... I dont like pinging 74 different servers for unknown reasons...
It truly is a liberating feeling, isn’t it? Especially as you can transition more and more of your daily tasks to Linux.
Some can switch overnight and never look back; for others, it can take years to find a good solution for everything they need. But the more time I spent it Linux instead of Windows, the better it made me feel!
Best of luck on your Linux journey!
It's a warm fuzzy feeling that I always get whenever I use my Linux system. 😆
Thanks for the KDE appearance customization tour, I am new to Linux, and i have to say this has been an eye-opener and really helpful, so a great many thanks :))
Glad to hear you found it helpful!
wth!??why is this so good.other video mostly show how to customise like theirs and only change appearance mostly but this one mix qll the functionality and good stuff that i can add to my own customisation.thank you man😉
So glad you found it helpful! 🙂
Hey Elliott find your channel and wanted to say that I like your presentation and your voice is clear and nice to listen too.
Well done 👍 and keep the vids coming
Thank you for the kind words! 😀 Glad you enjoy the content.
@@PlanetLinuxChannel your content is helpful for us Linux newbies.
On a side note I'm sorry for my response in the other comment. I get triggered when people say things like that.
That’s my goal-to explore Linux and help anyone and everyone use it to its fullest.
No worries about the other comment. To be honest, I thought about not getting involved, but I just wanted to prevent any argument.
I realy enjoy your videos. I like your voice and how calm you talk. Keep going. I wish the best for your channel
Thank you! Glad you enjoy them!
Finally someone who doesnt stick to the prevalent Windows/Mac themes !
And man that panel up there it is great !
Great video. Well done. I hope the semantic analysis algorithm blesses this wonderful video with many wonderful recommendations.
Well thank you! I hope so too! 🤞
You are excellent at what you do. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much. I’m glad you liked the video!
Great video! I was wondering why some of my themes did not look like they looked, it had to do with the install for Kvantum.
I'm curious - do you have the wallpaper link for the wallpaper you were using at the end of the video? Looks awesome!
I didn't even know you could DO all that stuff--- more to kde that I have evern realized... :)
Indeed. It was quite the rabbit hole to go down as I researched for the video.
Great video!
Thank you! Honoured to have someone of your calibre tune into my content!
discovered fish a few months ago - seriously INSTALL THIS NOW. Absolutely bonkers quality of life improvements, regardless of your terminal proficiency.
Absolutely! It is so useful!
Great video
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I've tried many themes but decided to stick with Breeze dark from now on, but with Papirus dark icons instead of the Breeze dark one which I don't like.
I just went back to Plasma today and I can't find the theme when searching on the kde get more global themes menu. Is there something I'm missing?
Hello! - thanks for sharing... I tried to install following your steps. But these icons are not the same as yours.. what could I have done wrong.. What are the names of these icons?
I am using kubuntu 23.10 and blur/transluency effect is not working on dolphin folder view with kvantum manager config. Anything to be checked?
Fantastic Video, might check this out instead of solus budgie, might try plasma first 👏
I haven’t looked at Budgie in quite some time. But yes, KDE Plasma is really great in my opinion.
Interesting thanks.
Awesome (Thumb Up)
Happy to hear you’re looking forward to it. Hope you enjoy it!
I have come to settle on KDE- and can't use much else..... I DO have MINT with BUDGIE 10 on my SSD as a backup-- it's DIFFERENT- but much more customizable than the regular version or the budgie by itself. FAST too.. GREAT VIDEO-- thanks. Always enjoy yours because you TALK instead of just confuse me wtih a fast moving mouse and videos that change scenes before my ONE eye that's left can focus!! :) You explain well and simply too!!
I’ve not tried Budgie recently, but it seems like it would be a good combination with Mint!
That’s an interesting similarity-I also can’t see out of one eye! Been that way since birth in my case.
what is that icon pack you are using?
I believe it is Win10 Sur icon scheme.
FISH? I've seen that-- but I use NALA, and not sure if that's the same-- but i LOVE Nala-- nice colors,, and it's not so bland... easy for my ONE eye to work with.. :)
I believe they’re somewhat related, but not the same type of thing. If I recall correctly, Nala is a nice-looking front-end for package management (apt)? Fish on the other hand, modifies the terminal typing experience so that when you press Tab to complete something, it’ll bring up a nice list of your options. It can also list out flag options along with descriptions as you type commands, and has highlighting of commands to show when something is typed wrong.
It’s pretty powerful and definitely deserves a video!
@@PlanetLinuxChannel Good deal- sounds interesting.. MIGHT try that myself- THANKS.
No problem!
Since I started using Linux, had used to use fish shell and personally, I haven't encountered any issues yet from 2021
Very nice! It’s my personal user shell of choice! (I had been working on a video covering it specifically, but I lost all of the footage and haven’t gotten around to redoing it).
I just added CACHY OS as one of my multiboot distros and it has the KDE 6-- and I HATE it-- they've F..d it up big time-- tried to make it Gnome-- and we already HAD gnome... now can't use KDE- it's just a jumbled MESS now.. so I have to learn to use something else-- without my auto -tiling, or use just POP OS- and it's still OLD looking til next month.
I'm using Arch KDE. I wish to see ksmooth dock instead of default panel & make it transparent.
I would like to see konsole profile altered as follows: key binding be Ctrl alt T & the konsole be transparent as wishes.
Hope you will show these. Thanks for this nice explanatory video.
I’d have to see about doing that when I have time. But I’m pretty sure KSmoothDock is available either in the standard Arch repos or the AUR. The increased transparency of the terminal should be easy enough to do-just increasing the slider in the profile’s Appearance settings (under Colours I believe).
@@PlanetLinuxChannel thanks for response. If it's in AUR, then paru -S ksmoothdock will do the job. I'll check it.
I tried the terminal method, pamac method, git etc but everytime it just failed. There were errors in terminal operation but couldn't find what was it actually. So I've got latte dock but i may try cairo or plank. Also the KDE floating panel looks great with reduced size.
That’s interesting that ksmooth is having errors building. I remember using Cairo Dock in the past; it used to be quite noce, though I’m not sure how it holds up these days. I’d say it’s worth a try though.
Plank works well, and has a bit of customization, but not nearly as many choices as something like Cairo.
You could also try Latte Dock, but I don’t think it’s really being maintained lately so there might be issues. Still might be worth a try though as it has quite a lot of features and preset layouts.
@@PlanetLinuxChannel I'm using latte dock currently. Yes, it's not maintained but gets bot updates as informed by a friend. He said cairo & plank are similar. I wrote to author of ksmooth dock and awaiting his response. It's sad that lots of docks are available but not in good shape. If KDE team can enable transparency on panel or introduce their own new dock, it'll be great.
KDE Neon > Manjaro KDE. KDE Neon you get the newest version of KDE and based on Ubuntu (Debian). So, If there any packages that are Debs only it can use it. Good video all around except the terminal that is all meh to me back when I ran Linux.
KDE Neon does get the latest KDE, but Manjaro usually isn’t far behind. But any distro of your choice that uses a fairly recent version of KDE should work great!
These days, the terminal isn’t very necessary on Linux, and many distros won’t need you to use it much at all. But it’s just often referenced in help content because peoples’ graphical interfaces can be so different from one another, so terminal commands are the one commonality. And it can be more efficient for certain tasks once you’re familiar with it.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment as always!
@@PlanetLinuxChannel This may be true but KDE Neon still does get the newest version of KDE since KDE Neon is their KDE playground. I understand what you are saying but if you go on a Ubuntu form then 9/10 your GUi is the same as everyone else especially if they say they are using GEE-NOME. Thank you for your insightful comment
You could use Kubuntu, and the KDE flavour of Ubuntu, to do this. It runs a fairly recent version of KDE (usually released within the past six months) that would work with any customization you’d want to do.
@@PlanetLinuxChannel But it is not a as new as KDE Neon. If I recall what it use to be or is Kubuntu gets you the newest software but oldest version of KDE. KDE Neon gives you the newest KDE but outdated software.
That is largely true. Neon ships the latest KDE release almost immediately. However Kubuntu, which has a new release every six months, ships the latest or near-latest KDE version at that given time. So it may become out-of-date for a few months until the next release of Kubuntu, but it is pretty current, and certainly recent enough for most of these customization features.
Great stuff, really enjo... ah, nevermind.
Haha, I see what you did there. No one wants to hear me ramble about how transparency implies that something is completely clear like glass, while translucency is the proper term for something that you can see through, but only partially, so whatever is behind it is blurry or dim.
See? It gets boring pretty quickly! 😀
Cosmetic, but appealing (💖´艸`💖)
Indeed!
YOU sound exactly like RICK NINEG on the videos about movies etc....
I suppose there’s some similarity there. I don’t know if I’d say EXACTLY the same though. 😀
Why cannot it look decent out of the box ?
This is a really goofy question
It does seem like the default KDE theme could use some refinement. Though the default appearance that I started with in this video was actually a variant specific to Manjaro, the distro that I was using.
@@Sammysapphira Not that goofy as your goofy reply mate :)
You have to admit that default distro's look&feel is a bit clunky for today standards compared to windows or macos.
Other way there would be no such "how to make your linux look decent" videos.
Wasn't this 'just' an Apple-ish layout copy ?
I suppose sort of, but that wasn’t really my goal. The only real similarity is having the application menu bars in the top panel. I didn’t have a dock like Mac (I kept the apps in the top left of the panel) and my window controls stayed on the right as opposed to left on the Mac.
KDE is a good platform if you are trying to customize for a macOS look though. People have even created some pretty impressive global theme parks inspired by it.
Asperger's ?
Sorry? I don’t think so.
Didn't your mother teach you to not judge someone based on their appearance?
That is a very immature and insulting thing to say. Especially when you don't even know the person.
@@decoydave WHAT on Earth causes you to assume that Im judging someone? ........ my comment was ONE word and that word is a medical ailment that not only he has.....but I have also! .............. how about stopping to pretend that you are standing up for human rights when you are CLEARLY "VIRTUE SIGNALLING"
@@jimw7916 read his reply.
Alright, let’s be nice here. After all, all is well that ends well.
And to clarify, no Asperger’s, though there are plenty of factors that surely affect how I present my videos. But that’s a longer story than I’d care to get into now.
Using fish 🤢
Yeah. I like some of its out-of-the-box functionality, but it definitely has its quirks.
KDE Plasma from having Personality (abysmal though it is) to becoming Windows rip off.
Just install Windows ffs.
It certainly has a Windows-y sort of default layout, but it’s so insanely customizable.
Why do you speak like that?
