    Some of the things that DT missed but a KDE user loves are:
    1. Plasma wallpaper accent color scheme that was made available in 5.25 makes the default theme breeze look great. If you use light along with it, the desktop looks awesome.
    2. Bismuth is no longer stable in kde 5.27. Instead its better to use 'kwin autotiling' which uses native 5.27 autotiling and is more stable than bismuth.
    3. Konsole actually has a random color scheme option that when enabled, applies new color scheme to a new console window.
    4. Although variety is good wallpaper changer, but the default wallpaper manager of kde is very powerful. One can enable picture of the day or can install third party plugins like wallhaven to change wallpapers periodically.
    5. Activity is a great option for productivity, specially if you do office work on your personal laptop. I agree, it might not be supported in future, but having different desktop settings in different activities is very good. For example, I have set up to display the documents folder of the sftp server of my work desktop , in my desktop of work activity. This is very handy.

      Revisiting this now that Plasma 6 is out. Is there an autotiling script that works with 6?

    Great video. It is really nice that someone finally makes a video that showcases some of what Manjaro and KDE can do. So often you see videos that just install a distro and show all the default functionality and look and feel. I have been using Manjaro and KDE for 2 years and I find it to be the most flexible system for customisation and set-up, it seems there is almost nothing you cannot do.

    4:44 if the keys you're trying to set are already in use, then Plasma will prompt you to replace the old one.
    5:04 you can see at the bottom left there's an "add application" button, you can click on it add konsole and set the keys for "launch new window"
    6:20 are you sure... 7:08 didn't even take a minute
    8:06 if you want to edit a file as root in kate, then you can launch kate normally and then when you go to save the edits it prompts for the password.
    9:19 rip bismuth you will be missed.
    9:31 Manjaro comes with pamac you can open pamac gui go to prefrences and enable the AUR then use "pamac build {package}"

  • @shauryakalia3296
    @shauryakalia3296 Год назад +9

    i know it was intentionally missed, but you should add konsole keybinding from add application button on the first page itself instead of going to custom shortcuts.
    Also kate's approach of prompting only when root action is required is better for noob users and even advance users, unless the latter want to do multiple separate actions

    I've used KDE manjaro for the last 2 years, only just recently moved to bspwm for a change, but KDE served me really well, I still use dolphin, KDE settings and system monitor apps (though annoyingly you have to use qt5ct to get them to render correctly and use themes). As far as battery included DEs go, I think KDE plasma is the best one. Pamac gui is also useful occasionally to quickly navigate dependencies and see what files a package owns/creates. I used to map something like krunner (the overview animation) straight to meta, but I totally see the usefulness of having an extra modifier key now, going from lets say two to three modifier keys actually lets you go from 3 to 7 modifier combinations... Also, kate will just ask for your password at runtime if it needs root for something specific (like writing a change to a root owned file).
    Edit: I did not know about parallel downloads... adding that

    The way you edit root files with kate is open it without sudo, and then make the edit, after you attempt to save, it'll then ask for password to temporarily give sudo privileges

    I like how people advertise changing keybindings and themes to become a power user. So a power user is basically someone who has a rice and not someone who uses their system extensively, and most of the time, doesn't care about these trivial things at all.

    I remember, my first sysadmin position looking over my boss’s shoulder and joking that it was funny that he had such a basic set up. He said, “Kid, ricing is for amateurs. Professionals install vanilla i3 and just get shit done.” Obviously, this doesn’t apply to all of us, but I think there is some truth to the observation that a lot of this theming and ricing comes from people who have the instinct to tinker (our fathers tinkered with their cars, our generation with tech) but don’t actually have any real work that they need to get done on the computer. I know for me, once I started doing sysadmin work, writing code, and later, got into pen testing, I lost all interest in theming or beautifying the desktop. Just give me the most solid, simple base from which to work with. Not knocking anyone BTW, just thinking out loud.

    I have an Nvidia GPU/card in my main rig and for productivity and gaming reasons, I use the proprietary/non-free Nvidia drivers; Manjaro's built-in hardware detection tool makes managing it seamless/painless. Nvidia proprietary drivers can be wonky sometimes and I've had experiences with other distros in which after an update, the desktop environment would fail to launch and I had to use a live USB to chroot and repair.
    Some people may say that KDE's customization is a bit overwhelming, but personally I really enjoy it because it blends very well with my workflow. In the past when I used Gnome, I would have to install about a dozen extensions to make the DE provide the functionalities I wanted and they could easily break during an update; KDE provides all I want out-of-the-box with no breakage during updates in most circumstances.
    Oh BTW, you can use pamac as an AUR helper in CLI, but you have to first goto the graphical software installer then -> hamburger menu -> Preferences -> Third Party Tab -> Enable AUR support.
    Anyways, thx for the very informative video.

    The dark spots under your eye, on temple, and upper cheek might be Blepharitis, "dry eye," possibly from looking at screens all days. Go to eye doctor and get a prescription for Restasis (daily eye drops). FYI: There are three type of tears in our eyes, one of which washes away the dirt. If it does not work properly, the dirt does not rinse away, and that causes the brown spots and grainy feeling eyes. Over the counter drops help, but Restasis is best. That's what happened to me. Blepharitis is serious, I read it can cause blindness.

  •  Год назад +4

    Honestly if someone asked me if they should use manjaro, I'd probably advise them against it. If you'd like to have an arch base, try endeavour os or raw dogging arch simply because of the stability. Stability? Yeah. People assume manjaro is more stable than arch due to them holding back packages but in my experience running them side by side manjaro broke while arch chugged on. Manjaro also has the "tradition" of shipping not yet merged feautes that the project developers didn't find good enough to include. The gnome version also ships a ton of extensions and themes with their OS again more often than not against the wishes of the developer. (Check out don't theme me.) Finally aur packages are meant for arch, so the staggered release of manjaro might break them. If you'd like to use the zen kernel with manjaro that isn't an option AFAIK. Lastly manjaro has many incidents in the past oopsie whoopsie forgetting to renew their SSL certs which lead to their site not being available. These facts are based on my personal journey with manjaro and reading the Linux news

    • @nathancrabtree2148
      @nathancrabtree2148 Год назад

      Ye, Arch is a lot more stable. I hate seeing Manjaro recommended for new users, it's only okay if they know what they could be in for and are prepared. If that's the case though they might as well use Arch or close to Arch.

    My GF inherited a laptop computer with Parrot OS already installed. It would be nice to see DT do a similar video on this Debian distro apparently geared toward penetration testing (pt). Hopefully seeing DT go through the install and settup will give me some ideas on getting this computer in a usable state for the GF; certainly not for pt use. It was reported to her that this computer has a virus on it. I have my doubts on that matter but I don't know how to safely find out for sure and clear out the malware if indeed such is on there.

    Manjaro and Endeavour are different beasts. If you aren't recommending Manjaro, please recommend something with slow-ish update schedule. Not everyone (especially newcomers) wants the frequent update of pure Arch

      Manjaro is almost as frequent. It's just artificially delayed for no reason which causes more problems than it solves. See the endless issues with manjaro installations imploding at seemingly random. If you want something slower, don't use anything arch based.

    Not so keen on Pamac though. Yaourt was better IMHO. Why does it insist on a GUI popup for auth when run in Terminal, except e.g. via SSH?
