    I would like to add that the shape of the helmet was designed pretty much 100% for use in the Greek phalanx. Sight, hearing, and communication did not matter much in ancient Greek infantry because, theoretically, the phalanx had you facing only in a single direction, and you would be shoulder-to-shoulder with men throughout the entirity of the formation. The highly enclosed shape of the helmet was to protect all areas of your head from projectiles/spears which could poke over the row of shields. The aggressive sloping and weight of the Corinthian helmet would protect much of head from such a blow.
    The theory behind the Greek Phalanx is that the large shield, called a Hoplon, will guard your entire body (from your shins to your forehead). For this reason, Hoplite armor typically consisted of greaves (shin armor), a Hoplon (the famous shield), the helmet (for your head of course), and nothing more. This is why in most ancient Greek depictions of soldiers, they would have a shield, helmet, some greaves, but no arm/chest/thigh armor. In the movie 300, everybody is shirtless; although this seems ridiculous, the average Greek Hoplite would not have worn much on their cheat aside from a simple tunic (maybe a cuirass if he could afford one).
    Often, you will see an added lip of armor on the top of the helmet. This is to add extra protection to the top of the head, which often protruded slightly above your Greek hoplon (large brass/hide shield).
    For Greek cavalry and archers, the more common helmets would be the Attic, Phrygian, or Boeotian helmet. A quick Google image search will instantly tell you why these helmets would be more suited for horseback or other non-phalanx purposes. This is also where cuirasses and other forms of Greek body armor would be more common.
    Bronze and metalworking was extremely expensive in Ancient Greece, so citizens fought for the best marginal value: a huge shield and big helmet kept you safe, got the job done, and would often be passed down through generations.
    In the battle of Gaugamela... the CONSERVATIVE estimates suggest 40,000 Persians killed/wounded in exchange for 500 Greeks killed (most of whom from the Cavalry). Hoplites were perfect for low-cost, low-manpower, non-standardized citizen armies of Ancient Greece.

    • @rowi3609
      @rowi3609 Год назад

      its not a Hoplon lol. Hoplon refers to the entirety of a hoplites defensive and offensive gear, the proper terminology is an Argive-Aspis. This is supported by J.F Lazenby who attempted to correct this. Also another point to prove that it was an Aspis (Argive referring to grip), is the name that spartans gave to cowards (Ripaspis) which essentially meant the one who thir the shield and ran.

    I will make a correction, the helmet allowed perfect hearing becasue of it's design to not restricte the wearer, they had an open area for the ears so hearing was unaffected and seeing was not restricted, it's design even allows peripheral vision unlike most medivel knight helms(not all medievl helms tho) where you are not seeing though small holesyour eyes would be seeing right though those hole without seeeing much dark/blind areas, with this helm you are seeing almost exactly the same if you were not wearing it, unless your heads wacked up or the helm size dosen't work for ya
    look carefully at the helm and pause at this time here 1:22

    Love this show. I wish they would have a Simple History version of Game of Thrones History or Star Wars History. Man that would be badass. That would be awesome for people who are re-watching shows or movies who missed out on lore behind the stories.
