My favorite is probable a German sallet. I love the smooth lines and how it tapers to a point at the back. I especially like the variations that use a visor, since it adds an extra layer of protection while still giving you the freedom to get it out of the way if necessary. There's a reason they used it as a base for the M1915 Stalhelm.

Makes a lot of sense. Interesting to see the differences between armors based on the regional differences of the weapons and tactics used. Calvary in western Europe doesn't seem to have as much of a history of a developed use of Horse archers on a large scale from what I've seen. While in the Middle east and Asia (especially the Mongols) were terribly effective. The Mongols would form a moving circle and anyone that charged into it would get pelted with arrows as the Mongols simply maneuvered the circle away. Not to mention becoming a nearly impossible target for opposing foot archers to hit them because of their movement. I had a really interesting book on the subject but it was burned in a fire :(

Tımarlı Sipahi ( Tımar is some sort of levy system that government gives people land to farm in exchange of manpower in wartime and sipahi means cavalry) is the basic soldier unit of Ottoman Army. They were heavy cavalry (heavy as in weight of horse, not in armor) and horse archers.
There were also Akıncı, light elite horseman for recon, support, chasing enemy, sudden hit and run tactics, basic espionage and attacking enemy camp in the middle of battles, that is rarely used.
There is Deli (literally means Mad), that is majority of Başıbozuk infantry that is used to flank enemies, attack in loose formation to tire enemies, and scare opposition. They wore weird, over the top "barbarian" clothing and other soldier with visible scars sent to this unit. Unlike Romans, Germanic Europians and Farsians tent to dehumanize their enemies by turning them into boogymen. And Ottoman Turks used this to weaponise it agains Europians.
There is also janissaries, a similar sytem Romans used in Gaul and Spain to romanisize natives by turning them into legio. But Romans did not made Ariminus the most important figure in Imperial Praetorian bodyguard. Ottomans did. You can assume what happened next.

With the Ottoman helmet it's worth to notice the nasal guard. On the picture it's set in an open position. It can be removed and reattached in a closed position with the wide leaf-like piece pointing downward and protecting the face. You'll find the exact same feature in Polish Hussar helmets. So the brim also serves a secondary purpose as an implement of attaching and holding the nasal guard.

Hey Skall just a brief little armor info on the Japanese Helmets and why most of them are decorated so extravagantly. (I have done my research on both European and Asian Armors as I love them both) Basically as I understand it, when the Samurai started to become a higher class of warriors in the early eras of Japan they began decorating their helmets to show their clan, their personality, and to also be relatively intimidating. Not unlike Knights in Europe except clan is replaced by family crest of course. Then later on in the Edo period or the era of peace when there was relatively no fighting, samurai had nothing more to do besides act as guards to merchants, become clerks , and buy really expensive items such as the over-the-top armor sets you're referring to. I would say the Edo period was relatively the "15th century Europe" of Japan (although it was the 16th century) if you will. Most of the said armor sets were not worn into battle. The designs you showed in this video are superb combat versions from earlier centuries. Hope you enjoyed this little tid bit, keep up the good work Skall!

Ottoman helmet: the visor is actually very practical: it covers the eyesight from the sunshine, if its rain it don't let rain to fall in the face of the warrior, it also gives protection in combat against hits. BTW the nose-guard is moveable up and down by a wing-nut, so if its up the wearer don't have take off the helmet to drink or eat in the middle of the battle.
15th. and 17th. century Hungarian cavalry had used a similar helmet which had a neck guard at the back. it was cold crayfish tail because the plates had moved on each other like the shell of the crayfish.

Helmets provide better protection against light weapons and arrows and swing with heavy weapons with limited power behind them. A direct hit with a mace, hammer or heavy sword can bend your metal and destroy the brain beneath it and their are some theoretical designs that i can think up on the spot that could increase the chances of surviving a direct blow on a helmet with force behind it but such a helmet would need another way to protect the head and the force pushing down upon it that could even include the shoulders and the head would still have to be able to turn and the helmet could well end up a decent size and i was not counting modern materials. A impenetrable helmet can still kill if it can be pushed against the head with enough force and could also snap your neck. connecting the helmet to some kind of armor should help with that but considering the metals a certain weight you might have trouble standing, Protections against dying from a bent helmet could become a bigger issue and would become a much bigger weight issue and alternate would to make the weapons slide or glance off the helm. Some kind of chamber system or double helmet maybe even some separations and supports or you could go with a very thick helm. What would i use to take the weight off the shoulders. a good portion of the armor would end up taking the blow.

The spider fit my head perfectly and the aventail actually made it feel better balanced than the more typical nasal helms of the reenactment group that was there. Before trying that I was convinced aventails were dumb and it would be better to wear a coif with the helm. But now I'm definitely sold on the aventail.

11:12 Ooh, I know this one!
The major improvement in the Chalcidian helmet over the Corinthian wasn't about the front, but in fact the ears. This gave the advantage of better hearing for situational awareness and troop coordination.

The Gallic Roman helmet is the most beautiful Ancient Helmet.
The helmet @ 8:41 has a very Sci-Fi look to it similar to those in games such as Destiny or Dead Space.

I too like the Corinthian helms, especially those with the large comb running front to back. I am also a fan of the Roman Galea helm, again preferring the versions with the large plumed comb. Yet, my favorite helm is the Morion helm worn by the Spanish Conquistadors. The curve of the brim is actually quite practical. It keeps the rain and sun out of your face and the curve in back allows one to look up without one's helm falling off. Also, that same curve allows the sides to drop over the ear allowing for ear protection that does not hamper hearing. I would never trust the beaver style face shields like those on several of your examples. Nor would I trust those "nose guard" style helms. One good smack from a war hammer, mace or sword pommel and the metal you entrusted to protect your face is now part of your face. Call me crazy but I prefer parry and move with unhampered vision and audible capabilities to covering my face in potential shrapnel. The large solid metal comb that runs across the top serves to make the helm more rigid and resistant to blunt force and would also wreak havoc to the face of anyone within range of your head butt. IMHO, the Morion was the best helm design predating the modern Kevlar helmet. But, then I'm a fan of the "Viking" goggles helm as well. I just like the look and the mail is quite practical in a CQB setting to prevent cuts to the face and neck.
Great stuff Skall! Thank you :)
PS: From a purely aesthetic stand point, I like all your choices. I just have challenges with the practicality of some of the design features.

The corinthian (with crest!) and that viking helmet with the eye guard are some of my favorites too. From what you did not mention here, I also like the Gothic sallet style helmets, and the medieval great helm which is very iconic for knights when they still wore chainmail.
I always preferred the chainmail with colorful surcoat look over plate armor in aesthetics at least.

The reason the Korean helmet resembles the ottoman helmet design is because they actually basically share a very similar structure, and that is because of the ottoman influenced the central Asians and brought that design, and central Asian were incorporated into the Mongolian empire, and the Mongolian conquered China, which influenced Chinese helmets design greatly, and eventually, the Koreans were highly influenced by China.
