Wow they turned out beautiful Will, well done. I really also appreciate your times and tricks along the way! Thanks for letting us know what speeds your using, makes a lot of sense with the 60 grit diamond disk to go slow, I've always had it cranked. I love your attention to detail and your video work and setup! Do you think it matters on the type of water used, I sometimes use bottled water, but I sometimes use my hard water which does have more minerals and sediment! Great job Will, gorgeous work man!
Thanks! Really glad to hear that they were helpful. Slower speed will help out a lot on those coarse grits. You'll be using a lot more water at higher rpm's too. You know, it actually does, but that's a whole can of worms I could be opening up here, haha. It would effect it the most in the last few polishing stages, having calcium residue in the water can become an abrasive, causing micro scratches. Bottled water or distilled water is good if you clean between rocks and separate out pads between steps. Unfortunately if you've used hard water already your pads will have soaked that calcium in. I think it only matters if you're aiming for a mirror like finish. It hasn't been an issue for anything I've encountered yet. Hope that helps some! You gave me a good idea for a future video now, haha!
This is a great video Will! Thanks for showing that cutting open part. I always wondered about that. That geode turned out amazing, It looked like you got that troublesome area polished up pretty well too.
This was incredibly helpful! I just joined a local rock club, and they have a workshop I can access. If they have a polisher like this, I have a geode I want to polish up. Thank you for showing all the steps! The geodes turned out beautifully, and I love the tips you gave along the way. 💜 I hope you have an awesome new year!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback! How exciting to hear! I Think you'll have a lot of fun in that rock club and working with all the various machines! Hope you get to polish out that geode of yours! Have fun with that!
Another great video, Will! Have you been able to get down to the Tucson gem & mineral shows at all? Anyone interested in rocks, minerals, lapidary etc would find the shows amazing. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! Sadly I have not been able too, every year I try, but I always wind up busy with work or something. I'm hoping this will be the year to finally get down there. Thanks for the reminder!!
My daughter just won a geode at a convention she loves crystals and all they told her it was rare due to it being solid all the way through. Trying to figure out how to make it more polished.
How neat! And an exciting prize it sounds like! If you don't have a machine, you could always try sand paper grits, if the geodes already been cut. It's a lot of work though. The poor mans polishing method. I started out that way. Make sure you work outdoors (lots of ventilation) with sandpaper though and a mask. You can do 60,80,120,240,600,1000 grit, then get a polishing compound and rub it in. Have fun with that geode!
You could use one to polish it, they sell a good number of grits for that. They make a great low budget polisher. The only problem is dust. You don't want to breath that rock dust in. Be sure to do that outdoors. Hope that helps!
I know this video is over a year old but I'm just getting into polishing my geodes. If by chance you see this message can you tell me what that table/water dripper system is called. I am having a hard time finding a table like that with a large polishing area. Thanks to anyone who can help
Thanks for reaching out! I use a lap grinder from Hi-Tech Diamond, they have a 6" and 8" version for the discs. I use the 8 inch version. It comes with everything you need to get started on polishing rocks, and is nice and compact. Hope that helps, if you have any other questions let me know! Thanks for watching!
I'm using a Diamond Pacific flat lap machine, it comes it two sizes, 6 and 8". I'm using the 8". If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks for watching!
Nice job! But you should REALLY be wearing a respirator to protect your lungs. Silicosis is not a joke. It can cause permanent disability, cancer and even death.

Is it possible to use a low end, electric orbital sander to polish cut geodes?
