    Another good video Mike. In the old days we'd drive the signal to tape pretty hard and knew what it could tolerate and it sounded great. I still can't get used to the lack of noise good and bad in digital, or needing to leave so much headroom going in. I've settled on around -6db as well for most things. Even the 'bad' gear today is SO much better on S/N ratio than we had in the 80's and 90's, much less when all those great albums were produced in the 60's and 70's.

    Thanks for another interesting and useful video, Mike.
    My recording problems are many, including the lovely old lady next door who is slightly deaf and insists on playing her keyboard quite loud! :) Bless her! Usually when I'm trying to record acoustic guitar or vocals! lol. Ah well.

    StudioOne? I thought you were a loyal Cakewalk user. Not that it matters tremendously. This information is very helpful! Thanks, Mike!

    Mixing up a Leslie speaker with a Hammond console definitely makes me have to factor in noise floor.
    Setting gain high on inputs and playing at lower volumes is capturing the whir and hum of the speaker. Have to turn down gain and jack up the volume on the console to combat!

    I have an Audio-Technica AT4040 mic which I really love. It is super sensile to even the slightest background noise, however. If I sit about a foot away from it and blink my eyes, I will see slight jumps in the Studio One meters. As long as I don't get it too close to my face, it's good. 😵‍💫

    Hi Mike, great video as always, you explain things in a clear and easily understood manner. Thank you. By the way the baby crying is me trying to get my recordings to sound as good as yours😂

    Ironic that Shure released the phantom powered SM7db to deal with problems driving it with home interfaces, while Focusrite and others are now releasing interfaces with 65-70dB gain to be able to drive mics like the original SM7b.

    Hi Mike, I enjoy your posts. A question. I want to record my band by using my older Mackie board in my Scarlet 212 3rd generation. In Cakewalk do I need to pan Left and Right also or is that not necessary? Thank you.

    Noise increases when using compression - a damn good reason not to compress the dynamic range.

    • @vjmcgovern
      @vjmcgovern 7 месяцев назад

      Yeah. I’d recommend using compression as a solution to a mixing problem rather than a creative tool. Compress only when necessary
