Hi Ola !!! Scuba not my thing. Maybe u find a guy named Steve to sribe while hes doing the scuba thing. Great video. Did misha give u the opportunity to be first to demo ?
Considering all your gain was coming from the pedal, I was very impressed with how it sounds; the eq seems to be very pleasant and it's nice that the pedal works well with the Precision Drive. However, I can't deny that your cab was probably having a huge influence on the tone; I was not very impressed with the snippet of the cab sim through the interface. I'd like to hear more examples of the built in cab sim, especially since it has the virtual mic sweep. It'd also be nice to hear the pedal in a few more scenarios, like through a few different cabs, combo amps, and virtual cabs/impulse response. Seems like a very good pedal though.
yeah, that's the take-away i've gotten from watching almost every apex preamp video on youtube: it sounds great, but the cab sim fucking sucks. it also really needs at least a power amp, because on its own it really struggles. it's not quite the "all-in-one" solution for modern metal tones horizon devices claim it to be, but in the right context, it really shines.
Sounds amazing into the fx loop return. They need to shove a version of that in a rack housing, stick a switchable loop in it, add a 2nd channel for cleans. Would make a nice rack rig into a proper poweramp.
Everyone keeps saying that it's a 5150 OD with a cab sim, but I honestly don't hear it. To my ears the 5150 OD has much more highs than the Apex and the mid control sounds like it effects a completely different frequency.
Thank you for what you do, Ola. Your channel is so informative, and hilarious. I find that my biggest issue when recording is proper layering. Even just some octaves over a heavy riff, they just never seem to cut through the right way.
I think the bypassable noise gate is a nice addition. I use my precision drive to add a little bit more clarity to my lead sound but even in its lowest setting the gate tends to cut off long sustained notes. You can play around it but having it bypassable adds a nice touch to what i think is another well thought out tone shaping device by these guys.
I'm not a djent player per se, but this pedal sounds awesome. I dig how the toight mode, when you click it on, is really for rhythm players and different from most OD/pre amp pedals. Well done
Awesome that you demoed the Precision Drive with the Apex Preamp! Even on it's own the Apex sounds so good, but together they sound so tight! Awesome Job, as usual Ola :)
This pedal sounded absolutely great...until 4:36 when Ola went straight into his audio interface. Sounded like a can of bees :( and this was the way I was going to use the Apex Preamp...
Hey Ola . so i just got this apex preamp yesterday and i tried it out last night on my Marshall valve state 2000 combo and it sounds really good im loving it !.
The thing about the Percission Drive I never see anyone address is the fact it takes away sooo much of the bottom end, an outrageous amount of bottom end. I have the Misha Variable Attack overdrive by ProTone and it reacts almost the same way, although you can toggle the Attack Frequency on/off with the Variable Attack OD which imo makes it the better boost ;)
Sounds like an excellent gate, which I desperately need... But can't find where to buy the Apex on the site though, I'm only finding their precision drive!
So Misha did a big sales pitch about the apex just two weeks calling for people to do a survey for features they'd like to see but the pedal's apparently already made?
Got curious after commenting so checked out the horizon devices facebook page and they apparently launched the pedal on July 23 with "early acess" orders as soon as july 28. Would be weird that they sent out a prototype pedal to be demoed by a youtuber if it wasn't the final product. So I still think the only question they cared about was how much people would be willing to pay for a MXR 5150 with cab sim. $299usd apparently.
The survey they sent out was probably more for marketing purposes. If they know what people want from a pedal they’ll know how to market it. This pedal has probably been a year or so in development.
Actually we had a few surveys sent out over the last couple years, this was just the latest one to finalize everything and make sure we were still on track!
Into a clean amp and a real cab -> sounds kinda like something in between a Peavey 6505 and a Revv 100p Into an interface using the cab sim -> sounds like a Line 6 Spider II on Insane mode
i bought the EVH 5150 overdrive pedal and it didn't sound as good as i though it would. From this video this pedal sounds much better. Would you say this is a much better overdrive than the EVH?
I wasn't really loving the sound of this pedal until you plugged it into the FX loop! as soon as you did that it was like night and day to me. sounds damn good .... i really want to try this sucker out now
Horizon Devices pedals are made by MXR so it probably is just a MXR 5150. Just an edit to note, the 5150 pedal has a boost button while the Apex has a CAB sim
Sounds like pretty much the ideal heavy metal pedal if you have a good amp to play it through. The Direct cabinet emulation sound was...as expected usable, but nowhere near as good sounding as a miced cabinet. I definitely may need to get one of these.
I liked the sound better in the loop, but at the same time you had all the mids out until you hooked up the drive. Is that intentional because of too much mids in the pedal?
Can someone tell me why you would have both? Is there a difference in the tone? I've got the Apex and I just put it in front of the amp. What would be the need to get a precision drive as well?
Hey Ola I was wondering the reasoning for pushing the volume on the Precision Drive on max? I was under the impression that 12'o on the volume was the same as full volume on a normal Tubescreamer.
HEY OLA! Cool to see you at the focusrite event in London on Sat. As entertaining as on here, minus the burps! Can you perhaps demo this preamp into an audio interface too please? Cheers
Hi, Can i put the raw output of my satan 50 in my audio interface with a jack cable? and if it's yes, did i put the cable in the Line input or in the instrument input? Thanks, great video as always. By
Hi Ola, could you explain how you plugged it to the back? i cant see the guitar cable at the amp IN. How does this solution works? Thx in advance! Steve
Can someone explain to me the difference between the Preamp and the overdrive pedal? What does the Preamp do which the overdrive doesn't? And why have both? Just to be super metal lol?
Why don't you just use something like a music sheet stand to hold the pedals? Or do what some other channels do by having a 2nd camera above pointed down for the pedal view so it can lay flat.
SCUBASCRIBE FOR MORE CAPS LOCK!
between this and revv g3 what do you will choose?
Hi Ola !!! Scuba not my thing. Maybe u find a guy named Steve to sribe while hes doing the scuba thing.
Great video. Did misha give u the opportunity to be first to demo ?
What is this song called as, 0:08?
ALL CAPS FOR CARLOS GUITARLOS!!!!
Have you tried MXR Full Bore Metal?
I love you.
Misha Mansoor theerrrre it is. 🍆💦👨❤️👨
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Misha ur da best!
Whens the pedal coming out and what is the price going to be please?
$299USD
Well the last pedal, the price was 100 percent worth it. If you nail this one, you'll be 2 and 0!
This sounds awesome
The pedal falling over is like a perfect metaphor for my life once I discovered anime
Sithu Aye I know right. When watching Anime i wonder to myself. Is there nothing I won't masturbate to.
Sithu, are you planning on releasing tab for Senpai II? Some of your lead runs are a massive pain in the ass to work out by ear! Take my money!
Tabs for Senpai II and Set Course for Andromeda are (finally) actually happening as we speak! I want to get those out in the next few months
Yes! Thank you!
HOLY YES ! Was hoping for those so much !

Nick Hetzschold Nope. Dick cam's missing
your amp has different size shoes on

Cab sim is unusable - a disaster.
yeah, that's the take-away i've gotten from watching almost every apex preamp video on youtube: it sounds great, but the cab sim fucking sucks. it also really needs at least a power amp, because on its own it really struggles. it's not quite the "all-in-one" solution for modern metal tones horizon devices claim it to be, but in the right context, it really shines.
Spoiler alert: it sucks
"Its still tight (says it correctly), even without the toight mode engaged"
Woah that sounds killer even through iPhone speakers!
Diego Oliveira No it doesn't. Get better speakers, better headphones
Ingemar Oskar get a less douchey attitude about other peoples stuff
@@wyldeyouth take a toasterbath
I think you guitars always sound awesone regardless of other stuff, man. Love and respect for you!
Why doesn't ever likes me....

The sound is so tight and beautiful, thanks for combine the pedals Ola.
Misha never seems to disappoint...got myself a precision drive 1/2 year ago, this pedal is killer!
"I'm not perfect, you know...I need tape too" just might be my favorite quote of 2019 so far

Waiting for the neighbor to ring the doorbell 😀
Me too!!...LOL To let Ola know he "appreciates" the playing....LOL
This and the Mooer Radar would work great together and make a great flying rig!
I use the Precision Drive in my chain and I love it. Perhaps I will use the Preamp as well. Very cool.
I think the tight mode is a boosted-midrange mode.. Anyway awesome video as always, Ola!
Marsha Manstains is like the Oprah of noise gates.. you get a noise gate, everything gets a noise gate!
Love it!
Love your content! I can always count on you for straight forward reviews before buying new gear. Thanks brother!
I was so pumped to hear you play 99 in here. :)
I'm not a djent player per se, but this pedal sounds awesome. I dig how the toight mode, when you click it on, is really for rhythm players and different from most OD/pre amp pedals. Well done
One of the best sounding preamp pedals I've heard. Another great demo.
Dude your guitar tones are so awesome!!!!!!
I love this pedal. This is probably the 5th time i've watched this demo, best one on this pedal.
Not a fan of Periphery at all but I still like the tone and use of gate. Am definitely looking forward to getting this soon for metal in general
good thing with these djent tones and presets is that they fit instantly in the mix
Killer sound! sounds great!
Holy Shit. This is perfection. I have just watched a bunch of Drive Videos and this one stands out above the rest.
Hey Ola . so i just got this apex preamp yesterday and i tried it out last night on my Marshall valve state 2000 combo and it sounds really good im loving it !.
"I was just gonna say the noise gate works really well, then the pedal fell over like a little bitch..." 😂😂😂
Counting down to Misha Mansoor's appearance and confession of his ultimate love.

the tones from this demo are my all time favorites
When you black and whited the screen at like 4:40 was my fav tone in the whole video.
This material for your new djent album sounds awesome!
Ola love your pick work - quick and accurate -
I was just about to buy the Precision Drive and saw this video. Now I don‘t know which one to get...
Great demo, Ola! I want a tremoverb after seeing all these videos.
I was looking review for this.. You are the only one I found first till now.. Pretty dope buddy 🤘
Ola, run the cables under the amp carry handle, they will help hold the pedal in place!
6:18 Is that what you call a "Tape Delay"? xP
Wow both together sounds sick, wasn’t expecting that
I just can't get enough of them sick brutal palm mutes, man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's more awesome when it put in the effects loop damn that tone 🔥🔥
Sounds like an excellent gate, which I desperately need... But can't find where to buy the Apex on the site though, I'm only finding their precision drive!

Quetzalcoatl I think I prefer the SD Palladium anyway.

Nice review. That sounded really great through the loop
i bought the EVH 5150 overdrive pedal and it didn't sound as good as i though it would. From this video this pedal sounds much better. Would you say this is a much better overdrive than the EVH?
@Ola.... so, at mark 3:29 it sounds as if something else is being kicked on just after you adjust the gain on the pedal.. ?
that super high tec chair has got to be a comfortable hit maker😎
Holy shit I need this pedal in my life! Thanks Ola for the awesome demo!
I noticed there wasn't any humming between riffs. Does this pre-amp eliminate the need for a Noise Suppressor?
I wonder that too
That's what a noise gate is.... the right hand side has a noise gate pedal built in
@@nogoodguitars5497 Sweet, thanks! I watched the video again and yeah, it is totally there. They know quality, the crunch is incredibly clean
I wasn't really loving the sound of this pedal until you plugged it into the FX loop! as soon as you did that it was like night and day to me. sounds damn good .... i really want to try this sucker out now
Great review Ola.🤘🏼
Fear Factory was the first thing that came into my mind. GREAT review!
i have a Diezel VH4 pedal....will this work together with the Apex?
Maybe you could do an episode called "will it stick" and try different brands and types of tape 😂😂😂
How different is this from the MXR 5150? They seem awefully similar, like the Apex is a 5150+ with added features...
Jesper Bøggild-Christensen it is MXR 5150+horizon device 😁
Horizon Devices pedals are made by MXR so it probably is just a MXR 5150. Just an edit to note, the 5150 pedal has a boost button while the Apex has a CAB sim
Jesper Bøggild-Christensen I'm pretty sure its voiced pretty differently
Misha's peavey signature head is basically modified 5150 with ad ons. So this is probably the same thing but in pedal form.
My thoughts exactly
Damn that is a spot on gojira sounding rig
Wow- this sounds as tight as Bon Jovi’s band when they’re warming up! Can’t wait for the tour to start!🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Sounds like pretty much the ideal heavy metal pedal if you have a good amp to play it through. The Direct cabinet emulation sound was...as expected usable, but nowhere near as good sounding as a miced cabinet. I definitely may need to get one of these.
I was wondering if that was tape or a blacklight emitting from the pedal
Apex Preamp sounds AMAZING!!! Kudos to Misha!
I liked the sound better in the loop, but at the same time you had all the mids out until you hooked up the drive. Is that intentional because of too much mids in the pedal?
I'm buying one. Love my Precision Drive, but this has even more tonal options.
Much beard! Looks good, and great video. Almost didn't believe you had one yet!
Could you do a demo of Apex straight into an interface? :)
funny video and really great pedal but not in store already..i checked
My Misha sig guitar is arriving this week, and I had a Precision Drive on on Xmas list, but I think I'll go the Apex instead.
Particularly "toït"! It can really chug. Sounds great into the Effects Return too.
Can someone tell me why you would have both?
Is there a difference in the tone?
I've got the Apex and I just put it in front of the amp. What would be the need to get a precision drive as well?
Have you ever talked to Greg Burgess from Allegaeon. The dude is ridiculously great with 7 and 8 string guitars?
Hey Ola I was wondering the reasoning for pushing the volume on the Precision Drive on max? I was under the impression that 12'o on the volume was the same as full volume on a normal Tubescreamer.
Love the string attack this pedal let's through. Perfect death/rhraah metal chopper. Just what I want.
Unfortunately dont love the price tag though.
3:20 golden tone right there
HEY OLA! Cool to see you at the focusrite event in London on Sat. As entertaining as on here, minus the burps!

my thought is that you should be on the cover of High Times... maybe even try the Cannabis Cup.
Wonder how this would sound on a hi-gain solid state, like my randall rg1503-212.
Is it based of an existing tube amp? Invective maybe? I am curious.
Hey, can you do something like short bonus video where you're showcasing different sounds of the cab sim? Thank you.
was 0:52 meant to quote austin powers goldmember?
How does this compare to precision drive and the revv g3 and revv g4?
So I'm thinking Horizon are going to have to change the name of the Tight switch to "Toight" now.
(Laughed every freaking time!)
Why don't you just use something like a music sheet stand to hold the pedals? Or do what some other channels do by having a 2nd camera above pointed down for the pedal view so it can lay flat.
I'm wandering if there is a shirt for "keep calm and sludge along"?
Awesome pedal and great demo thanks dad!
