    Q.
If your ball rolls into a penalty area from the general area after taking a penalty drop, are you permitted to play it if it is within two club-lengths of where it landed when you dropped it?
    .
    A.
No, the player must re-drop the ball. The ball must come to rest in the same area of the course within the relief area that it first touched on the drop.

I was kind of feeling like Rory may be at the point of trying to find a new Caddy sometime in the near future..(as he has not been doing very well lately, and often caddy’s take some of the blame) but I think Harry may have saved His job for a little while longer with helping Rory make the right call here.

Rory gave a demonstration (RUclips video) hitting seven iron 195 - normal club/distance for him - with slight breeze behind, of course with a preferred lie. Amazing that he chose an eight iron for this shot - and pulled it off! Kudos to caddie for calming Rory who certainly looked out-of-sorts.

I did similar last week as the ball was settled right down at the bottom of a large clump of grass. I found a spot about a club length away which I knew would make the ball bounce and roll out of the drop area. I took two drops and then got to place it on a nice soft tuft, better than you can tee it up on a par 3! Wind was swirling, but I knew higher up it was strong, but steady right to left, I decided on a hard 7 rather than a gentle 6, to try and get it up through the swirling air. There was a strip of flat grass off the front left of the green, which would feed an approach shot between the front two bunkers and allow it to run down the gentle sloped green towards the hole. Ball slightly below my feet and with that wind, I aimed about 15 feet left of the green stip with a gentle fade so the ball would stop at the hole and not run past, weight slightly on my back foot for the extra ball height, concentrated on my shot shape and swing thought, one last deep breath, a slow smooth back swing and I shanked it 60 yards dead right. There is a difference between me and Rory...

Tough shot for the average golfer (rough and sloped) but not too bad for these guys. The original shot though that was BURIED in high grass (not just rough DEEP/wet rough) - hitting out of that could've been a disaster. Even for pros that's a VERY unpredictable/tough shot. One of the few golfers that was able to pull off shots like that was Tiger because he was so strong and his swing was so hard.... which of course led to all his body breakdown/back issues...

In this case, hindsight is always 20/20. If he pitched out to the fairway, that 3rd shot into the green would have been a heck of a lot easier. Yes, he can flub the pitch out, but he can also fail to hit a worldburner from a ball placed in the rough on a severe sidehill lie. So, since he hit an amazing recovery shot, the decision looks good. But, it could have gone the other way, too, and he could have hit a poor shot that came up short in the hazard, or flared it out way right. But, he hit a great shot out of a much trickier spot than the flat fairway. Either choice had a similar amount of high risk attached to it. The risk was just moved from shot 2 to shot 3. It was a gutsy decision, that's for sure.

The closer you get to those creeks the more rocks are just underneath the surface of the grass.

What you're missing from your analysis is the individual PLAYER.
Two options, (lay up, take drop and rip it) both high risk but different requirements. A simple analysis is "go with the one with the lowest risk". Good players consider both and go with the one that they feel they can EXECUTE with the lowest risk.
I have no doubt every player can answer with confidence "do you feel better pitching out of creek cabbage, or hitting an approach shot from rough below your feet?" - they may answer differently but that doesn't make their answers wrong.

This to me, made his next shot much easier as the second time he placed it, it was in a spot with less rough around the ball than the first placement. Surely once it had been placed the first time the ball was in play and he has to hit it from there. Yes, but three off the Tee isn't a great place to be........ as it turned out he was on the green for three.

He used the rules as written. I agree, but I don't think the rules should allow that much of an improvement from the original lie. That ball was buried in grass and the rules allowed for such an improvement to allow for a great shot. Yes I play golf but a one stroke penalty only and an improved lie seems overly generous..

His ball was in a penalty area, therefore he is allowed to play his next shot outside of that area under a penalty of one stroke. The 'quality' of his lie within the penalty area is irrelevant to the area of his drop.

@@1HappyGolfer Refer to Committee Procedures 8B-2 - "Relief on Opposite Side of Red Penalty Area". A Committee can introduce a Local Rule to allow lateral relief on the opposite side of the red penalty area as an extra relief option under Rule 17.1d. The reference point for the relief area is the estimated point on the opposite edge of the penalty area that is the same distance from the hole as the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.

But it looked to me like he placed the ball once, it settled down too much for his liking, he and the official on the scene exchanged a few words, then Rory picked it up, and RE-placed the ball with a fluffier lie the result... He placed it twice, in other words, looked like to me. How is that legal? (Just asking. Love Rory.)

    • @GolfRulesQuestions

He placed it, but it wasn't at rest. So he needed to replace it so that when he let go of it it was at rest.

To be certain that it crossed the line twice more. Then you have the option to place the ball. This gives you better options and a better lie.
