18 Bolt Action Battle Report: British vs Germans 1200 points, fight for the village.

- This week we stay in Normandy France for the next Bolt Action battle report from the Ministry of Miniatures.
Rick returns with his 1200 point German force to take on my British Army and battle it out to take command of a small French village.
We will be playing double envelopment where each player has to try to score more points than their opponent… 1 point for each unit dice taken, 2 points per unit in the enemy deployment zone and 3 points per unit that gets off of the opponent’s board edge.
Another great battle, fantastic board and a bit of banter along the way…
…but who will win, watch and see!

My British Army are fairly old now, they are the old models from some time ago, and one of my first armies (it shows 😂)
I keep thinking of getting a new British Army with the newer models… but my backlog is preventing me from doing that.
Rick has been focusing on the Germans, he has a lovely, very well equipped army, so always great fighting them.

Nice table, nice mission, nice armies, but imho a hostile gameplay with a component who is too competitive. Good win though. 👍🏻
Lol, no It’s fine, Rick and I have known each other for years and we have lots of banter about cheesy armies, playing different systems and forces. His army is a very heavy German army, beautifully painted with lots of heavy weapons… he is working on an inexperienced luftwaffe defense force, so that will be interesting to play against.
Was a good game nonetheless, I really had to concentrate on the mission and scoring points.
@@theministryofminiatures its true I brought a very competitive army, so your criticism is fair. However, as you saw it is not what you bring that matters but how good a player you are. Clearly I have to improve.

Indeed it is, it’s just easier to call it the Bren carrier, should try to remember, but I always revert to Bren 🤷🏻♂️😂

I always take the pintle mounted MG for my Panzerwerfer 42 when I run mine. As the ability to split fire is there and also to have a slight bubble protection against bazooka's and PIAT's with the 36" reach of the MG against the 24" bazooka and up close and stare them in the eyes PIAT at 12".
Great idea, German MMG are always a bonus and used as you described is perfect… not that they need anymore MMG’s 😂

Rick had 17th SS that can have Hedge row ambush, so his Fallshirmjager can forward deploy in ambush, the rules I believe are in one of the DDay books. 👍🏻

Great video, where did you get the terrain from?
Thanks, some purchased some made, some upgraded! We have a collection of’stuff’ from all of us in the group, which when pulled together goes really well!
I think when your hit a unit in building with artyllery, you dont use template but a roll or d6 (different for each he , 4inch is i think 3d6 , and on 11+ result building colapse and kill everyone inside) and if you not destroy building you follow number od hits (Down - so halve the result) as usual . But i think you first roll for each floor (and roof) if the Shell actually explode on bottom floor or explode before reaching bottom floor - but this i am not 100% sure how you roll .
Oh and when your hit artyllery Strike , and unit survives you roll d6 pins instead of d3 (its a big boom )
I am in the process of re-reading the rules, I know we got a few things wrong, some silly mistakes others that were just wrong… still a great battle in the spirit of the game, but moving forward we need to make sure we get the rules correct 👍🏻
For the building on the bombardment, I’m pretty sure you roll against the building then D6 hits

Lol, I seem to roll lots of 6’s, so must be lucky… until I have to take a morale test!
Also had to really concentrate on the scenario to win, not just charge across the board otherwise I think the result would have been very different.

@@theministryofminiatures like someone pointed out to me, I still play like it is 40k. In 40k I can roll loads of 6s trouble is I do in BA but for morale.
Like playing BA but it is defo not my strong game lol.
@@bringbattlewargaming8720 Do you know I have tried many different dice over the years, especially when we played a lot of MESBG, I have always found that I throw below average number of 6's. In this game I assaulted two of Justin's British with five of my German. I threw 1, 1, 3, 3, 3 and justin got a 3 and a 6. This is typical for me.
Another example is the British artillery barrage Justin threw five dice and got two 6's. I fired the MRL's many times and got only one 6!

I thought forward deployers were placed after regular units? or is this a special rule for this game?
Yes this was just a scenario we agreed before we set up.
But yes, depending on the scenario forward deployers set up after initial deployment AND before the game starts for turn 1.
16:18 you fired your mortar from your forward observers perspective. That's not legal. It has to be from the perspective of the spotter you purchased with the mortar. 17:05 "There's something I've discovered, multiple rocket launchers can target empty buildings." German player definitely doesn't like the British player. Brings two MRL's and doesn't tell the other player that rule before deployment, lol. Also, he completely did the targeting wrong. You don't use the template until you hit the units. So, he targeted that middle unit. Every unit withing 6" from anywhere near a model in that unit has the potential of being hit. There was another squad, forward observer, mortar spotter and maybe one other. Roll to hit on a 6 for each. Only if you hit do you use the template to calculate number of models hit. Just a bit of advice, you guys might want to read and discuss the rules before filming.

Yes you are correct I used my forward observer as the spotter, which I shouldn’t have done, this was a genuine mistake, if you ever film whilst playing you will understand how difficult it is to keep track of everything and know all the rules at hand, thats why editing takes so long 😂.
For info, we do discuss certain rules and cover etc. and we have read the rules, but mistakes happen… ultimately we just want to have a game, have fun and learn as we go… I believe lots of people get rules wrong, say the wrong thing and make mistakes, for me, that’s being human… we had a great game and had the fortune to share it.
I hope you liked it despite the illegal moves and rule breaches, thanks again.

@@theministryofminiatures hope I didn't come across too harsh. That wasn't my intention. I see you guys enjoying yourselves and the last thing I want to do is kill that positivity.
If you would allow me to explain a bit better. For some reason with Bolt action I see a lot more mistakes on RUclips channel battle reports than I do from even more complex games like 40K. It appears to me that a lot fo BA players want to get into filming before they have had time to really get a firm grasp of the rules. I don't want to sound like I'm telling people what to do, but there are two problems with this. New players watch these reports and may learn how to interpret a rule in the wrong way. And if a mistake is drastic enough, as it often is, it will impact the outcome of the game. Once I see three of four mistakes in the first ten to twenty minutes, I stop watching. Anyway, I hope this helps and again, not trying to be a kill joy. Love the armies and terrain!
No problem, it is right to point them out, otherwise we don’t know if we have made a mistake.
Most of our players are new(ish), i have played for several years, but with filming it is hard to keep a track of everything and remember all the rules… especially when I use my iphone to film.

@@theministryofminiatures just to add in not trying to be a rules lawyer i feel the same way as Jasztin. I was listening while painting and caught something that stood out to me as incorrect but i may be wrong at the 58:28 mark you fired two machine guns at the multi launcher and applied two pins. I believe you only get one pin per unit that is shooting assuming your not a vehicle splitting fire. also with an armor 7 you couldn't apply pins unless it was open topped. could be wrong as I said was only half paying attention either way glad your enjoying the games and will continue to watch.
Interesting that the rules for multiple launchers on page 72 states:
However, every time you fire it, pick the first target unit as normal and then check which other enemy units are within 6" of the original template - these are also targets. If you find that there is a friendly unit within 6" of the original template, you cannot fire and the shot is wasted. Once the target units have been determined, check if any of these units are within the minimum range - these units are missed automatically. Then roll to hit for all remaining target
If vou score and
units, one at a time in any order you prefer, hitting on 6.
This seems to suggest Rick did it correctly even though I haven’t seen it done like that before…
