Frontier Gate agents (3rd party companies who are hired out and not actual employees) make commissions on charges for bags and pets. There are some who have cleared over $1000 extra on their paychecks so this is why they’re so aggressive about it now. Also fun fact during the summer months they’re rewarded for on time departures so they’re pushy on closing the doors early and not waiting for passengers.

I found your videos last week and I’m such a fan, I have started to travel more and had no real idea on what was needed and the differences in airlines so these help a lot. Fun fact: Spirit gives you an extra inch each dimension. There’s a ruler engraved into the bin and you can actually see it. But I think I’m officially done with budget airlines and their rules. With a carry on penalty of $198 round trip if you get pulled (regardless of right, wrong or indifferent), it ends up being cheaper to book with a major airline that allows carry on luggage and way less headaches.
I like spirit because their rules are simple. I hate paying for a carry on, but at least they aren’t making up their own rules like Frontier. I know I can find an 18 x 14 x 8 bag and it will be fine with spirit. Frontier: nooooo
I originally bought a backpack- styled bag with a lot of convenient compartments for my personal item. Since I'm going to grad school almost 5,000 miles away and will be taking all of my electronics on the plane, I bought the Underseat Pro after about one after a week of consideration. I managed to fit both my MacBook Air and an iPad in the front pocket. This review really helped, and it really does fit a lot! The bag rolls smoothly, and the structured sides are perfect to prevent overpacking. I'll be bringing 3 checked suitcases, this personal item bag, and my violin on my flight. I feel a lot better knowing that my back won't be aching when I get to school!

We just got back from an Alaska cruise and flew Alaskan airlines we used the Underseat Pro It worked great 0 problems! While we were at the airport I tried the Underseat Pro at Frontier and Spirit airlines and measured the Underseat Pro It fit just fine. Thanks for all the information!!!!

I'm a big fan of UNDERSEAT PRO! I own their entire line, including the carry-on, the backpack, and the rolling suitcase. You should make a video showing how much you can pack in the bag; it looked half empty with the contents of the other bag! I'm a big guy, and I can easily pack for a week in my UP suitcase!

This will not fit on United
If I had to pick between frontier and spirit, I would choose spirit. Frontier is insane for their baggage nonsense and on top of that, every time my husband has flown frontier, his flight was always late/delayed or cancelled. Not a fan of them at all. I have this bag and used it to fly to Maryland in November (meaning, COLD) and I packed like 3 pairs of sweat pants, tees, toiletries, underwear, and two laptops (work and personal) and it all fit in that bag.

Great review! We recently flew Frontier to Miami. They were picking and choosing which passengers to target. Some were charged for large personal items and some were let through. I saw some huge backpacks that would have never fit in the personal item box. Either charge everybody or nobody!

@@ItsTheKellys My prediction is... Spirit and Frontier will start decreasing checked bag weigh allowance. Currently, my husband and I share one checked bag. It costs $50 one way. Our wheeled duffel weighs 7 lbs, so that only leaves us with 33 lbs between us for packing (we put shoes in our personal item bag). I recently found a large packable duffel at the Columbia store (weighs about 2 lbs). I'm just not sure how well it will hold up in the cargo area.
@@MNP208 it’s so interesting how the checked bags are cheaper than the carry ons though. Like they want you to check instead. (Probably because of the smaller weight limit that people don’t pay attention to)

Air Canada (and other Canadian airlines) seem to just be a backpack friendly one. Although I think the bento bag will work! (Testing it tomorrow for a video next weekend)

I was SO ready to ask you about the black tabs I spotted on either side of the smallest inside mesh pocket, but then you showed that they're Velcro! Great little bonus to have that break down so well. I haven't flown Spirit and it's been a while since I've flown Frontier (back when they were NOT like they are now), but this is a fabulous bag! Might need to get one... I think a lot of people who recommend luggage never even try it out for size. Thanks for being the person who always DOES, Lauren! I'm so curious what you would have to do with the water bottle. Since the bag wouldn't likely fit in the sizer with the water bottle in the pocket, you'd have to leave room in the bag for that? That's the ONLY fault I can find for this bag!

Good question. I’d imagine that an airline would let you hold it as you board/put it in the bin. Maybe not frontier 😂
I use the water bottle pocket all the time! It's handy while walking around the airport or running from one gate to another during transit flights. I have never had issues with any airline; you just have to take the water bottle out of the pocket to measure the bag. Food and drinks DO NOT count as personal items on any airline, including Frontier!

They are two totally different bags, so it’s hard to say which I prefer. It can depend on the trip and the airline and everything. I like take off’s spinner wheels and the hard shell, but this one holds more, and has an outer pocket.

I was thinking of getting another underseat bag that's bigger. Mine that i just used for a Mexico trip is about 13x13x8 and fits under United Airlines seats.

@@anthonylarsen7965 it was great. I had bought others but i could pack more due to its depth and could use the compression straps to hold it all down to get more items in. Wheels rolled well and no issues fitting for spirit airlines. I find this bag a value. I stacked my kids personal bag on this and it handled the weight well. The handle was smooth no issues. The water bottle holder also worked great. Id buy this again in a second. Let me know if you have further questions.

@@ItsTheKellys yes, I honestly think the Take Off Luggage is the best hard sided and the The UnderSeat Pro is the best soft sided. Do you agree with that assessment? The reason why I asked is because I was wanting to make a purchase (one hard case and one soft case personal sized luggage). I currently own the TRPC Luggage that I got off of Amazon but it is quite compact, but still a work horse. :)

To continue your personal item reviews, you should review the Nomad Lane Bento Bag. Supposed to fit under practically every airline seat. I personally have one and love it! Mine came with a TSA liquids bag, tech bag, and USB charging cable to attach to a battery pack. Bag opens up like a clamshell as well.

Interesting bag...it REALLY needs an outside pocket for quick-access to your toiletries (even Pre-TSA requires you pull them out for scanning). I fly Hawaiian Air most often, and seeing these "Personal Item" sizers (I hadn't seen those) I had to check HA's under-seat measurements. Zip...nada! Only a statement "it must fit under the seat". Guess if it doesn't, you'll have to pop it up on the upper bin. You know what niggles me the most? When customers put their carry-on in the upper bin, and ALSO stuff their personal parcel right beside it. UGH...there's no reason for it. Help everybody out on these flights, and put your personal bag UNDER THE SEAT IN FRONT OF YOU!! Okay...I'm done. LOL Nice video!

However, for airlines, like spirit and frontier, they really do truly make you put it in the bin. And if you have a really large front pocket, and stuff it with items, it can budge out, and therefore not fit in the bin. Not every airline is this stingy, of course. They are meanies!

Sorry, I only put it in the bins for airlines that charge for carry ons this time. :) United says their personal item size is 17 x 10 x 9, so it seems like a no. I can always test it on my next airline run. At least with ones it won’t fit on, like United or jet blue, allow carry ons of a normal size for free.
I've flown United with both my UNDERSEAT PRO backpack and the foldable suitcase. They do fit in United's measuring bins; they just stick out a couple of inches at the top. United's gate agents are not as strict compared to Frontier's or Spirit's!
@John Thanks, I get so tired of United gate-checking me half the time because I'm in boarding group 4. I shouldn't have to pay extra just so I can get on the plane earlier while there are still empty spaces up above.

Comparison between this underseat pro and take off please
To be honest, there are so many differences between the two (2 wheels bs 4, soft vs hard, outside pocket vs none) that besides being under the seat bags, they aren’t comparable. I’ll be comparing this bag to a similar competitor and maybe take off to a similar competitor, but probably not those two.
Love the inline wheels too. How does it wheel? Great suitcase but I could see a problem wheeling it down the aisle in plane.
It wheels just fine! They just aren’t spinners, which can be hard for some to get used to.
New subscriber here. I’m a first time traveler really. I’m going on a cruise with carry in only. For my personal item I’m still deciding on what to buy. Can I ask how do you put this under the seat? It looks like it’s too wide to fit?
Depending on where on the plane you are, it either goes long ways or wide. Typically the middle seat has the most width with the seat in front, and the window aisle it has to go long ways. At least that’s how it was with my other one that was the same size, on spirit :) and this bag fits perfectly on top of a carry on, with the trolley sleeve
how easy is it to put on another suitcase trolley handles?

United is a lot smaller than the others, so anything on wheels will be pretty impossible. I don’t know of any that are small enough, I usually end up doing a backpack that can attach to my carry on.

It all depends on your airline! Most airlines allow a personal item and a carry on. You could set this on top of your carry on with the trolley sleeve! Some budget airlines, like spirit and frontier, charge for carry on bags, but you can still do both, just pay for it!
European airlines often weigh your personal item, so if you're traveling to Europe, make sure to familiarize yourself with the size and weight restrictions allowed by the airline you're flying with.

I don’t think so, United is super weird. But the mini weekender won’t fit either. You need just a small backpack for a personal item for United.

I can see if it fits when I get home. But if you just needed to pack a back up bag, I would just pack a foldable duffel because it would only take up a few inches.

He could probably do it with this, but if you wanted hard shell, I’d check out take off luggage. I have several videos on it

Any that have the handle on the outside takes some depth out of the inside usually. So it’s almost better to have the grooves inside and pack with them, then to lose an inch everywhere in deoth
Do you know if this will fit under an aisle seat? I like to fly aisle seat, but sometimes they do not have as much space. I'm also wondering how I will take things out and put them back during the flight. I take my ipad and charger out during flight. I would think it would more of a struggle than a top loading bag. I haven’t taken it on a plane to be honest, but I would put my most needed items in the front pocket before boarding for easy access. As a small carry on for stingy budget international airlines, yes! But their personal items are more like a purse or a briefcase size.
The most common personal item size used by European Airlines is 40 x 30 x 15 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 inches). It’s pretty small compared to the most common personal size here in the US which is 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm.) so make sure your personal item size does not exceed that measurement. What airlines are planning on traveling with?
I have a business trolley I want to replace which had b odd design and which I hated using. I’ll get this one! Thx, because I have never heard of this company! I think the design is ingenious, and it fold down! Omg! And apparently is made from recycled materials! Cool!

Hi Amber! So it really all comes down to preference! If you’re doing personal item only, this one is going to hold the most, and it’s on wheels, which is great! Backpacks can be nice, but don’t hold as much and can get hot/heavy!

question, I need a new underseat bag that protects what is inside. for example, I have a mold of 2 hands and I have a round cement block of my deceased dogs paw. any help? I am also moving overseas so I need something spacious as well
The good thing about an underseat bag is that you always will handle it yourself. I would bubble wrap them, and wrap them in cloth/clothing and only pack them with soft things. This underseater in this video has the most room you will find for an underseater. And then just be super gentle with it :)

Can you do a comparison between the different Underseat bags like this one and the Take Off Luggage. I would think they all should fit the same amount of stuff so is there an advantage of one over the other? It seems the Take Off Bag is more durable but hard to know until you have it in hand. It really sucks spending money trying to find that ONE perfect bag only to find out it's not what you expected.

How does compare size wise to the beis mini weekender?
The beis mini weekender is 16 x 16 x 8 but can barely fit anything because of its doctor bag opening and the bottom only having 4”. I can fit 1 packing cube in the big part, and a few other things, ba everything I fit in this one

I have not. I only use Beis for domestic within the US, as a lot of their stuff is too big for international airlines. I don’t use the mini weekender for air travel, only for car rides/overnights.

First of all, they are so different because of hard vs soft, outer pocket vs none, and 2 wheels vs 4. So it more depends on your preferences. If you need an underseater for that trip, this bag is in stock, and ready to ship. Take off is not.

@@shazk7279 I agree with Lauren; it's two different types of bags: hard shell vs. soft shell, inline wheels vs. spinner wheels. It wouldn't be fair to compare the two. I personally prefer soft-sided bags with inline wheels... they have more capacity! (I'm a big guy!)

Southwest technically says 18.5 x 13.5 x 8.5. So it’s 1/2 inch too big (width wise) but is small enough for the other dimensions. I would do it. They aren’t strict and have sizers at the gate

I have been waiting and waiting to purchase the personal item from Take Off Luggage, but now I am wondering if I should get this instead. Does Take Off hold as much as this? All of the pockets in this one might sway me if they hold close to the same amount.
It depends on what you pack. In this video, I was unpacking the take off and repacking it in here. But tonight I did it again and it fit the same.
To me it comes down to whether you want 4 spinner wheels or 2 wheels and if you want the harder shell or soft, and if you want outer pockets or not.

I’d have to literally book a flight to do that, within the US, and all of my flights for the next 2 years are international. I can’t buy a flight every time I review a bag.

Just flew Frontier, 4 one way legs, and my sister's bag got flagged and had to pay BECAUSE... and I think your bag would get flagged too, the gate agents demanded that the bag sit BELOW the top edge of the sizer. Your bag does not sit BELOW the top edge even though it is sooooo dang close @10:34 you can see the back wheels are ever so slightly above the metal flashing, but the gate agents will flag it if they want to be jerks like they were for my sister's bag, or supposedly fill a quota I didn't know about getting more money by how many customers they got to pay? Well, it looks like a great bag, but I'd want it to be able to sit just below that top edge of the sizer. Thanks for the review! Will continue to hunt for a wheeled personal item.
The wheels and the legs are actually below the metal flashing, they appear to stick out because of the angle. As soon as Lauren puts the camera on the same level, both the wheels and the legs disappear from sight.

Sadly it doesn't open from the top...which is easier if sitting in your seat...You can just dive through the top to get what you need. This has to open up like a suitcase. But it IS nice...
There is a new version with new features. When it is under the seat, it has to go in either long way or wide way, depending on which seat you are in. The laptop is easily accessible while in flight, and the side pocket, as long as you slide it in facing you that way.
As they say, YMMV about “personal items” especially with budget airlines. At the end of the day if the gate agent says “no” then the answer is “no”.
If your bag clearly fits inside the measuring bin, and the gate agents insist you have to pay, you can file a formal complaint with the airline or with the Department of Transportation (for flights within or to/from the United States).
I mean sure, but that does not help you when you’re getting on the plane and you’re either paying for that bag or you’re not getting on the plane with that bag. The gate agent is still key here.

Hi Debra. The bad news is that the United personal item size is very small (barely even a backpack, so your purse would be great!) but the good news is that a carry on is included in your fare. So you could bring this as a “free carry on” and your purse as a “personal item” and check your bag still. The even better news is that this bag has a trolley sleeve, so you can fit it on top of your checked bag when you are headed to and from.

I do love m’y little baggalini travel pouch wallet with a clip on it. I put it in any purse (during potential pickpocket times) and clip it onto an inside zipper! It also has two zippers so i use cards in one and currency in the other.

I would never fly Frontier or Spirit airlines, because not only do they cheap out on bags they also cheap out on fixing their airplanes!
