Joy's vocal control is absolutely friggin astounding. Her mic technique is flawless. Such passion and energy put into every performance. They never left anything on the stage when they performed. Miss these guys.
If you don't like their version, go away and listen to Smashing Pumpkins, don't trash their brilliant interpretation of the song. Because either way they have to be super creative to change the style of the song so much, and perfectly make it their own.
***** You didn't make a mistake, decrescendo is just an alternative term for a diminuendo... just as an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th is synonymous with a tritone. They're the same thing.
Honestly I think the smashing pumpkins would love seeing one of their songs interpreted and covered like this any true musician loves to see there music connect with people in other genres
7th time in a row just listening to this..... I can't stop. And I absolutely love the Smashing Pumpkins. I usually hate covers, but this one is by far the best I have ever heard.
No matter how good a song is every once in awhile you get tired of it. So its great to have this covers that takes the song to places you don't imagine...keeps the song fresh and alive. Keep that in mind..
They now have new solo albums out and life is going very well for the disbanded Civil Wars ! I am so happy they found new and awesome creativity on their own !
I'm pretty certain they will perform together one day again. If what they created is unforgettable and exceptional (and it is.) to us, the public, then it sure as hell won't be something they can put behind just like that. Regardless of what happens from now on, all of their covers along with barton hollow are exactly the perfect-edged pieces of the puzzle called 'great music'. So inspiring. And for that, thank you CW.
I think there is no doubt that both of these people are incredibly talented in there own right. But I do feel JP gave Joy the avenue to perfect what she can do. Together they are unstoppable, Two voices made for each other. Period!
I'm speechless! For 2 reasons; the undeniable magic that occurs when hearing these 2 sing together, but even more b/c they're no longer singing together? So very unfortunate!
Great cover in the way that you made it your own, which always should be the case when a band does a cover. Really well done. You have to forgive me though that having experienced the original in my early 20's when it was first released, the original still holds greater weight with me.
They have completely achieved rendering their "own" version of this song... No need to argue which one is best or not.. Two different styles which may appeal to either fans... In my case. I just love both.
Let me clarify My comment about JP giving Joy an avenue before the trolls start in on me.....lol JPW puts out a solo album it would do very well on it's own, Joy has put out solo albums to not a super cozy reception. But together these two equal Perfection. Civil Wars would not have been as good if either JP or Joy had never been there It just would not have worked this well.
This is the better version of the two. Sometimes a cover brings a song full circle. Pumpkins version brought a lot of questions. This version answers those questions.
Who's to say that they can't do their own interpretation of it? It's nice to hear something played in a different style than just a note for note cover.
I like the original, love this cover, practically two completely different songs though. I am tres glad it was on their new CD. Because yes, I still buy CDs. Hopefully it won't be their last. :(
yeah! the smashing pumpkins did a cover of landslide by fleetwood mac and the solo is completely different. and fyi to whoever wrote the comment above you, i like it. its different, and a happy medium between me (the smashing pumpkins freak) and my sister (the Civil Wars freak)
I love their rendition of this song so much I consider it theirs alone. (Sorry) it's so heartbreaking yet strengthening at the same time. They could probably sing it acapela and it would still be fantabulous 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
What are you talking about? The media really ran away with the whole tour cancelling thing... To me, the whole statement they made about why they cancelled sounded like Joy underestimated how things would go after having the baby. I thought it sounded like a calculated way of saying "oops, I love my baby more than my singing career right now"... Again, that's how I took it- not like I know for certain... But they ARE writing new music together still and we should have a new album soon...;)
It doesn't mean they will continue. They might have been contractually obligated to release something from their label. HOPEFULLY, they will continue...
You're one clear example of why people is unique. Because my opinion is the total opposite of yours. I feel like the original lacks emotion (and I love them!).
Don't compare it to the original. Perfectly written songs can be produced in any style. They allow interpratation and still have the structure to be magnifique. Just enjoy.
Wow, so happy that chick felt it appropriate to yell during a very meaningful song about the struggles with depression...congrats for the rude behaviour, very classy!
See, I completely disagree. I think the softer melody and more acoustic harmonies enhance the poignancy of the lyrics. The song literally is "disarming" you with its deceptive sweetness, while you can hear the clear longing in their voices. But then again, I'm not a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, so... grain of salt.
I so agree with you......Why God why? all the real musician always get caught up in the money or some shit! and not why they where making music in the first place :( I hate what the industry does to music these days! and I knew the "music" chemistry between them would get to if not 1 both of their other halves now we have to leave with loss because his wife has issues!!! I just want my @thecivilwars back....
the girl that screamed in the beginning was a little annoying at first but after listening to this version 100000000 times, I realized that I probably would've done the same thing.
Joy's vocal control is absolutely friggin astounding. Her mic technique is flawless.

Every few months or so, I end up back here and lament what might have been.
Utterly, gorgeously, haunting cover, and this is coming from a long-time, die hard Pumpkins fan.
Wow.
Man, I miss these guys and their beautiful voices. This cover is a highlight of this album. Gets me every time.
That crowd is annoying as hell. Why can't you just shut up and listen to these amazing musicians do their thing?
Breaks my heart knowing that they broke up. Such beautiful music they made.
So sad. I suspect relationship drama. No one can sing like that together and not have chemistry (and shes's married).
I can listen to this song forever. Love it sooooooo much!
1:17 "I must get attention, nobody has given me any attention for several minutes, they just look at this band all the time"
pridden76 I love the audience reaction. I feel it.
I really enjoyed the subtle crescendos and decrescendos around 1:49. They really show mastery of the voice as an instrument.
fyi it's called a diminuendo not a decrescendo
My mistake.
***** You didn't make a mistake, decrescendo is just an alternative term for a diminuendo... just as an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th is synonymous with a tritone. They're the same thing.

What a loss, what a loss !!!
No matter how good a song is every once in awhile you get tired of it. So its great to have this covers that takes the song to places you don't imagine...keeps the song fresh and alive. Keep that in mind..
I found myself wandering here again. I just can't resist. The acoustics of the room are INCREDIBLE with better headphones.
Hard not to fall in love with Joy singing like that.... 💘
3:20 right there in the feels....
Stunning. No words
It touches me in all the right places 😇😇😇
Gorgeous song, so fun to play and sing. The Civil Wars are truly one of the greatest duo I have ever seen.
They now have new solo
albums out and life is going very well for the disbanded Civil Wars ! I am so happy they found new and awesome creativity on their own !
They're both talented; Together, they are magical.
We all carry stories inside of us, waiting to be read.
whoa what a great rendition
I think there is no doubt that both of these people are incredibly talented in there own right. But I do feel JP gave Joy the avenue to perfect what she can do. Together they are unstoppable, Two voices made for each other. Period!
My favorite performance!!
Chills.. I got chills. Extraordinary.
So beautiful
THE STUDIO VERSION IS SO AMAZING IT MAKES ME WANNA CRY
absolutely stunning. haunting. beautiful. wow...
i almost cry every time i hear something new by them
I don't think they're underrated. They're my favorite band!
Beautiful take on an amazing song. Awesome job
this gave me goosebumps!
Same! Ugh they are just unbelievably flawless...
Blown away with the version!
I am shaken by the power of these voices.
Love from René, from beautiful Leiden, in Holland.
Quite,quite stunning.
Frequency (Netflix) I thank you so very much.
Beautiful rendition
amazing, I'm speechless. There's so much feeling in their song
I'm so glad they recording this for the new ablum, the studio version is beautiful.
I'm speechless! For 2 reasons; the undeniable magic that occurs when hearing these 2 sing together, but even more b/c they're no longer singing together? So very unfortunate!
I never liked the original version, but their version gives me chills.
Beautiful.
Breath taking
They are awesome.Nuff said!
Wonderful...
I love it!!! The Civil Wars are amazing ♥
Stunning.......
gah. goosebumps.
You are correct. This is the only Pumpkin cover I ever heard that gave me the same feeling as the original.
This song always makes me feel like I should be crying
incredible
Great cover in the way that you made it your own, which always should be the case when a band does a cover. Really well done.
You have to forgive me though that having experienced the original in my early 20's when it was first released, the original still holds greater weight with me.
Amazing.
Purest voices in the business!
I love it so.....Fantastic Artist's and Fabulous Song....Peace, Love & Kindness for all....Wado, Redbird ~~ : ^ )
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
What a tragedy it will be if they stop making music together :(
They have completely achieved rendering their "own" version of this song... No need to argue which one is best or not.. Two different styles which may appeal to either fans... In my case. I just love both.
That was amazing
Amazing!
Love it!!
I love this song so much it hurts u_u
Just LOVELY...

Great guitar tone also.
Most underrated band of the 90s.
Their voices are so fucking clean :)
These guys are great. I reeeaaaally like the girls voice.
They're both great. Why can't people just listen and enjoy without fighting?!
omg her voice
Her voice destroys me, especially at around 1:28. So gifted. RIP the civil wars.
Parting is such sweet sorrow.....
3:20 gives me the chills everytime
This is the better version of the two. Sometimes a cover brings a song full circle. Pumpkins version brought a lot of questions. This version answers those questions.
I've played this song on my guitar the past week because of the Civil Wars and how they just stick on you.
Who's to say that they can't do their own interpretation of it? It's nice to hear something played in a different style than just a note for note cover.

yes
I love their rendition of this song so much I consider it theirs alone. (Sorry) it's so heartbreaking yet strengthening at the same time. They could probably sing it acapela and it would still be fantabulous 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Works for me.

Very unique approach for a SmashingPumpkinsVEVO #classic #welldone TheCivilWars TheCivilWarsVEVO thecivilwarsmusic
I know it's becoming a bit of a cliche saying such a thing but MY GOD the GENUINE goosebumps I experienced at 3:19 .
That scream in the beginning
Everyone grew up listening to this song...
It doesn't mean they will continue. They might have been contractually obligated to release something from their label. HOPEFULLY, they will continue...
There needs to be a tab for this song. I want to learn it!
Cool band...
Ahhhhuuuuuuuu!!!

Me too
