      Exactly. All of Nietzsches best philosophy was a reaction against and overturning of exactly the kind of despair people place on him.

      the irony of that scene (I don't know if it was deliberate) is that his ringtone was Bach's toccata and fugue and it was written to be performed on Sundays on a church organ.

    It is possible to understand that Nietzsche was not just gloomy and still find this hilarious. It is likely that if you're complaining that this doesn't take Nietzsche seriously enough you might need to read more Nietzsche.

  • @JazzGuitar420
    @JazzGuitar420 8 лет назад +44

    Funny, but a little unfair. Nietzsche's tone is in general light-hearted and not heavy and self-serious. This is an unfortunate misconception that Nietzsche actually predicted and went to great lengths to try to dispel.

    Nietzsche was not in despair and did not think that life was meaningless or worthless. He was saying everyone else lives as if life is worthless. There is hope in every sentence that Nietzsche wrote. Nobody has ever given me a better picture of what a good life can be and why I should be strong and courageous to strive and climb this mountain that is life. I don’t understand where people get this image of Nietzsche from. He was the first over-man and I truly believe that humanity at this point is not smart enough to understand Nietzsche. Maybe in the next century they’ll understand the great ubermensch.

  • @rags847
    @rags847 9 лет назад +34

    Oh, brother! Nietzsche was superior, not inferior. He said Yes to life! Amour Fati! He willed himself into a God who raised above life, danced and laughed. Giving style to his character and personality was one of his main four virtues. Nietzsche foresaw that inferior people would misunderstand him. What you just lampooned was Schopenhauer. Nietzsche's avowed opposite.
    A little learning is clearly a bad thing. Read Nietzsche again.

      Um, of course they're out of context? Did Nietzsche have a room mate named Todd? I don't care one way or the other, but this video does make the philosopher out to be a bit of a d-bag. Particularly with the ladies. And maybe he was.

      I think that he might be asking you to tell him something Nietzsche said that was antisemetic, presumably so he can point out the context of what he was saying and why it isn't. For example, the "all jews become mawkish" quote, is referring, I think, to how Christians are an offshoot of Jews.
      Mawkish: sentimental in a feeble or sickly way
      this could describe how Nietzsche saw Christians.

    Unfortunately, the humor in this video comes at the expense of a great philosopher. Although funny, the joke/parody does not really carry any truth. 1:17 shows Nietzsche's disgust for anti-semitism, 1:53 was Nietzsche's paraphrasing of other pessimistic philosophers (who he criticizes), 2:54 is not a Nietzsche quote, but Nietzsche quoting Silenus, to whom Nietzsche responds "We might now say of them, with a reversion of the Silenian wisdom, that 'to die early is worst of all for them, the second worst is some day to die at all.'"
    So while indeed funny, this video is an awful mis-characterization that will lead a lot of people to believe that Nietzsche said stupid shit. And that could not be further from the truth.

      machinations7, Nietzsche did spew a whole ton of shit. That is the truth. In the midst of all that shit were a few nuggets of knowledge, kernels of the truth. Nietzsche said god is dead, what he should have said is; The human conceptualization of a god is only alive between the ears of 'believers', and nowhere else in reality. That would have been the smart (not-shit) thing for Nietzsche to say.

    • @stephenkirby1264
      @stephenkirby1264 7 лет назад

      machinations7,
      That Nietzsche said;
      ‘’What is it: is man only a blunder of god, or god only a blunder of man?’’
      Friedrich Nietzsche, Maxims and Arrows, 7. Twilight of the Idols (1888)
      That was another shit thing that Nietzsche said. All he did by saying this is obfuscate truth, to the detriment of humankind, not for humankind's benefit.
      Nietzsche said stupid shit, and so have quite a few other ''philosophers'' of the period, and since then too.

    ‘’What is it: is man only a blunder of god, or god only a blunder of man?’’
    Friedrich Nietzsche, Maxims and Arrows, 7. Twilight of the Idols (1888)
    What is it? Since there has been no verifiable, repeatable, proof of the existence of a god, it is obvious that a god is only a blunder of man. That is what it is! A human conceptualization of a ‘savior from without’, which is not extant in reality.
    You people who ‘believe’ that there just may be a god need to grow up, reach for some intellectual maturity, and get on with the hard work of formulating a truly civil community of worldwide citizenry. That there is no god, not even the one Nietzsche said was dead, makes this task easier, especially for those who also have given up on the equally ridiculous notion of a ‘savior from without’.
