  • Hello everyone! Hope you are all doing great. In todays video I went over how to tame your budgie and how to set yourself up for success. I am no means a professional, but this video was requested a lot so here are my tips and tricks. If it helped you out, please let me know and give this video a thumbs up! My budgie Frank is still in the taming process and I keep everyone updated on my instagram so feel free to give me a follow :)
    Instagram: louiandfran...
    Listed below are some main points I went over so you don't have to keep on rewatching the video.
    - 1 budgie is easier to tame than two. If you do have two budgies, keep them in separate cages
    - The best age to get a budgie is between 8-12 weeks. The older the bird, the harder it can be to tame.
    - I would highly advise against wing clipping because birds have a flight or fight response. If you take away their flight, when they feel in danger they will bite.
    - NEVER force a bird up onto you, yell at them, or punish your bird.
    - If a budgie is on a proper diet, they will have high value treats. You can use these treats in training sessions.
    - If you do get bit, never have a reaction or pull your hand away because it encourages this biting behaviour.
    - The step up method is shown. In the video at 4:50
    - Training sessions should be only 2-5 minutes long, a couple times a day.
    - Talking and making weird sounds can make your bird interested in you so they will want to come to you.
    - If you have an aggressive bird, you can use the shake method. Its shown in the video at 7:20
    - Some aggressive budgie body language includes, leaning away from you, striking your hand, a stiff body, and running away from you.
    I hope this video helped at least someone out there. If you want me to post any other specific videos, just let me know. Stay safe everyone.

    ahh! this helped so much! I got 2 budgies at the start, not one, so that explains why I have had them for a year and they still hate me. (Yes, I tried taming multiple times and a gentle way, nothing worked.) I have a spare cage (proper size for 1 bird) so, I'm going to separate them for the training process. But I will be keeping the cages next to each other so they don't miss each other.

    I just got my daughter 2 budgies a week ago. Girl (Paris) boy (Prince) and they just ate out our hands yesterday. Paris is already kind of getting use to getting on our finger and today for the first time she walked up my daughter's arm then set on her shoulder staring at her. Prince sometimes will step up on our finger but soon as he see the cage door open he fly right back in so I let him stay there until he ready to fly back out.

    I just got two budgies and at week two we started to learn them to lick the finger before getting a treat. One of them understood it immediately an got the treat every time. The other observed, and started with biting hard. Then I just removed the treat and not the finger, and after just 4-5 tries he also got it. Fantastic experience.

    I appreciated your tips. I’ve had my parakeet for almost 4 months. He was a gift from PetSmart, so I don’t know is age. He was frightened twice soon after he was purchased and won’t come out of his cage. However, he did accidentally one time, flew around and landed. When I quietly and slowly approach him, he stepped on my finger and we slowly returned to his cage. How do you deal with free flight in your house regarding their excrement?

    Awesome video! Wish I had seen this before we got out 2 babies at the same time. I know you recommended getting a second cage. Would you then put them in different rooms? Or keep the cages side by side? we've had them for almost 3 months now and think they have bonded. Would it be a problem to separate them now? Thanks!

    • @louiandfrank5595
      @louiandfrank5595  3 года назад +2

      If the birds are already bonded, don’t put them in separate rooms or they can become depressed. You can try having two different cages and open the cages during the day so they can play so they only sleep apart. But if they show signs of being depressed, put them back in the same cage. Good luck!

I'd like to have a very friendly bird, but already have one budgie. Once the schools open I won't be home for a few hours, so I'm not sure if it's ideal to buy a very Young budgie. What should I do?

Their all in the same cage, and I have a smaller cage since when I first got them. Do you think I can build a bond with one of them if I separate one of them and work with him for a while. I have three budgies, Two of them were bought together, and one of them was severely traumatized by its last owner since it was led to a fly trap. I got a third one that was around 5 months old and they are all now comfortable with their new cage here at my home. How can I get them to get close enough for me to attempt to tame them?

    • @louiandfrank5595
      @louiandfrank5595  3 года назад +1

      I would start by just sitting outside but near the cage for a good few days. Once they don’t freak out if you go close to them, offer some food through the cage. I’d recommend a millet spray and just stick it through the cage bars or just hold it by the very end. I would feed this like for a week or so, untill they are calm. Then try feeding them out of your hand. Remember patience is key and take it slow :)

    • @jodijohnson1810
      @jodijohnson1810 3 года назад +1

      Keep your budgie in the living room if that is where you and all the humans spend most of their time. You need to be their "flock".

    • @louiandfrank5595
      @louiandfrank5595  3 года назад +1

      I agree with Jodi, keep them in your living room but make sure you never spray any scents or burn candles near them. Also make sure they are no where near the kitchen as the chemicals and smells damage their respiratory system. If you do decide to light a candle, maybe move them into the room, also try installing fly screens on your doors so they can’t get out. If their cage is open, never open the doors and lock them so others can’t. If you know the doors will open and close a lot, move them into the room. Hope this could help :)

    I had 2 budgies for several years who recently died from what appeared to be old age. Now I have a huge (5 feet long) wonderful cage that I turned into a plant place, but I so miss my birds. I'm thinking of getting one budgie now. I am retired & home all the time so can give it plenty of attention. If I let the budgie out of the cage will it stay in one area where there is a good toy & perch set up, such as on top of the cage or do they like to fly all over the house? I've seen parrots that only hang out in their play area outside the cage, but budgies might be different. Do they poop everywhere or like to go in a certain place when outside the cage? Thanks!

    • @louiandfrank5595

    Hi, I have 3 budgies. They all live in a flight cage altogether and when ever I try to go to tame them 1 of them listens. When the 1st one listens his other friends start following him and eating the millet while I try to teach him something. But after a while he gets distracted because his friends call him and he goes with them. I have a smaller cage and do you think I can separate him from the other 2 to tame him for a couple months and put him back with them once I am finished and I’ll do the same with the other 2?

    • @louiandfrank5595
      @louiandfrank5595  3 года назад +1

      You could pull him out the cage into another cage but I would still keep them in the same room. You can take him into another room when doing taming sessions. Only take him out the cage if he’s not super bonded to the other birds :)

    I got 2 bugies around a mo th ago, the first one was abandoned and as he was really lonely and I don't believe into keeping animals such as birds alone I got a 2nd one a week later. Since then I'm trying to tame them as especially the 2nd one is extremely afraid of hands. Sounds weird but I'd be happy if they'd be aggressive because I find aggressive birds to be easier to work with than scared birds..They're both really skittish.

    • @louiandfrank5595
      @louiandfrank5595  3 года назад

      My girl Loui was very skittish. I recommend talking to them everyday all the time. Let them become used to your voice. Place your hand or millet in the cage but don’t move it. You need to let them get used to your presence. When you feel the time is right is when you can get them to step up. But be careful as skittish birds break their trust easy

      If you have millet sprays that could be better. When she is hungry like right in the morning when she wakes up, offer a millet spray but try keep your fingers as far down as you can. Slowly you can build up the trust and put your fingers closer and hopefully she won’t be scared. If she does run away from the millet spray, just stay still and don’t chase her. Let her come to you.
