@Frenzied Unicorn Productions I think that's purely due to how updated the mechanics are in World, the moving while using items and more responsive gameplay definitely make a big difference in perceived difficulty. I can't count the amount of times I've died simply to the hero flex taking far longer than I expected, or just janky controls. I die much less simply from those two improvements, the mantles do help, as does the clutch claw, but I definitely don't think the core of the game is mechanically more difficult. If anything I've had way more problems with the same monsters in World/IB than MHGU Rajang, Barioth, Nargacuga, and the majority of shared monsters I honestly found more difficult in World, I played them through at the same time. The only monster I found infinitely more difficult in MHGU was Diablos for some reason, the smaller maps combined with less responsive input made him an absolute pain in the ass. I think G-rank hypers and AT monsters are about the same difficulty in my experience. I found the Deviants/BDs about the same as end game bosses/BDs in World.
The HP pools aren't bloated as well, like in gu and the AI is much less retarded in general along with movement improvements. GU isn't harder, it's more bs. it's artificially harder due to outdated mechanics and questionable design decisions
Hey Gaijin! I just wanted to say thanks for uploading these updated guides. World was a complete blast for me, and offered a very different experience. I was a little disappointed that there was only around 100 hours of content for me personally (Which is a lot, don't get me wrong), because what was there was great. Much like what you touched upon in your other video though, I really miss the massive build projects you can do in generations, and the fact that there's so many different things to fight never once made it boring to me. Sorry for the rambling, thanks for refreshing me on one of my favourite weapons :)
Hey man, thank you so much for making these tutorial videos! I especially enjoyed the LS, CB, and Swaxe ones because of how technical the weapons were.
You aren't. ^^ I was using it in Generations, and now I'm using it in Generations Ultimate. Dependend on the monster, I also switch to Adept here and there or try out Striker, but Aerial is the most fun I have with this weapon.
Thanks for Uploading these tutorials, I've played MHG a LOT but since i played MHW i forgot the most of the stuff from Generations, thats a good refresh befor i start the game on the switch once again :)
Thanks for the new video! I'm a huge fan of monster hunter, and I usually main sword and shield, so I always want to learn new tips and techniques to improve! I'm so excited to get this on switch, and I've been wanting an English release since day one of the switch!
Back when I watched the original version of this video for Gen Vanilla, I certainly couldn't use the back-hop properly. Then I played World. They've rebalanced it since, but Slam Dunking in World is gonna make the SnS all the better for me in Gen Ultimate.
Gotta be honest and say I agree more with Arekzz on Aerial SnS. The bread and butter combo is still just as good as any other style. Add the mounting potental, stamina oil, and a paralysis weapon and thats a lot of time of the monster doing nothing. Stamina oil makes shiygeki absolete and roundforce is not all that great which just leaves the best of the three. Apply oil, mount the monster and when its down go staright for the face and suddenly hammer finds itself without its crown.
Amazing guide as usual. Small note I haven't seen anywhere: after an Adept Back-Step Dodge Counterslash, you can follow up immediately with the Adept Dodge Lunging Slashes (X+A), but not a Jumping Slash.
I simply can't wait to buy this game a second time, just to understand everything. Thanks for these helping vids, so I understand my favourite weapon better! :)
Same here. I played MHXX for about 210 hours and i've pretty much have seen all the game has to offer. I'm looking forward to play it again but in a language i can actually understand and read. The japanese language got onto my nerves after a while, especially when trying to create mixed armor sets and looking for talismans and decorations. I never realized how important it is being able to read and understand text after playing MHXX.
My career as MH begins in september, this year, with MHW, aways heard the Sword and Shield is "for noobs". I ignored the weapon for weeks, but when I tried...was fun as HELL!!!! Is one of my fav weapons, and now, go to GU, I will begin with Kinsect and Sword and Shield!!!
Also noteworthy is the extra synergy in Guild Style. If you enter SP Mode all your items get faster use times, including if you use them with your weapon drawn.
i preffer aerial myself. mostly cause its so fluid, the jump comes out so fast and can be done durring a combo so you can essentially fly around the monster from safe area to safe area and oil up for that sweet ko after a mount. MMmmm soo good...
Aerial style is heaps of fun with a paralysis sword. Mount the monster, spam the X attacks and charged backstep, paralyse it, get the hits in, mount again, rinse and repeat.
I’m sure you probably don’t do requests but it would really help people who are new to the switch (bought it for MHGen Ultimate) if you did a tutorial on how to transfer your save data from MHGen on the 3DS to MHGen Ultimate on the switch. I would really appreciate it because I don’t want to have to start from scratch again if I can avoid it
Artekz gaming has a great tutorial on how to do that, he also does really good MH videos , him and gaijin are my fav when it comes to learning MH tips and tricks. Give it a look and check out his tutorial its pretty simple and easy to understand
Omg Chaos Oil [NUT]! I went back to Generations recently to get ready for GU and man I missed oils.. I don't really enjoy how SnS feels in World and it was just unfortunate.. but the way it plays, the oils, the specials feels so good in Gen/GU even though I haven't played GU yet.
Silver Lyons what?? No oils in World but the move set in World is FAR better for SnS. In World the charge attack goes right into either a mounting attack or a diving shield bash that can KO a monster. This is the highest DPS combo for SnS and it doesn’t exist in MHGU. And the mounting attack makes the SnS even better for mounts than IG in World.
I know what the meta is for SnS in World, and I don't enjoy doing the back hop into the aerial shield smash over and over again. I like doing combos and weaving in and out quickly.. Trying that in World is kinda obsolete and the turn slash and stab moves are kinda cool but overall if you're not willing to bounce all over the monster you're not getting the most you can get in that game so everything feels different. I'll probably end up still playing both but, I stand by my preference of old school SnS over World SnS.. Just because of pure preference. There are some things I prefer in World though, or had an affinity to, like Foresight Slash and stuff but yeah. I'm not saying any is better than the other, and not bashing anyone for liking World's version more: It's interesting to watch other people doing the SnS shenanigans in World.
Silver Lyons I’ve gotta agree with you friend, classic SnS just feels right. Better than world? Debatable, that’s just up to one’s taste really. I’m still playing like it’s 3u half the time anyway lol
Silver Lyons Sorry but just because the downward bash is the meta for speedruns doesn’t mean you HAVE to spam it to enjoy using the SnS in World. The spiral slash in World makes sword combos even better. Also the double shield bash in the older games is now a triple shield bash in World which is much better since you’re only shield bashing if you’re trying to build up exhaust and stun on the monster. The new mounting and jump attacks make the SnS the best weapon in the game for mounting, bar none. And I say this with 900 quests using IG in World. The slinger makes the “use items without sheathing” even more valuable. This also includes wedge beetles and mantles. And you can now put down a shock trap and pitfall trap one after another without destroying the first one. You can now much more easily add Guard and Guard Up skills to a build and tank big attacks like Nerg’s dive bomb with your shield like a Lance if you want. You can have your preference, that’s fine. I main SnS in GenU and the oils are awesome, I wish we had those in World. But that’s honestly my only complaint about SnS in MHW.
SnS is a simple weapon they said, a beginners choice they said...and here i am, trying to wrap my mind arround all the combos this weapon can perform...
Horrible for beginners. I tried it in my first game mh4u and always died to timeouts. It requires a really aggressive playstyle. I think the hammer or the greats word are a lot better for beginners as they reward a more conservative playstyle.
Hey gaijin, i was hunting the valstrax in the demo and i found something strange on his tower. There are some kind of energy veins running through the stones. I think that's his source of his "propulsion mechanism", but that's just my opinion. You should check it out.
Man that Hyper Silos+Gian quest may have given me cancer, but the reward is definitely worth it, 60% Affinity baby, AND quick sharpen. Also didnt know about the extra sharpness modifier and the wind immunity you get with the X+A attack, guess you never stop learning these weapon specific details, like LS giving you hi windproof when attacking
lvl3 chaos oil is a nightmare to get, but lvl2 is still busted. 15% affinity, minds eye, 5-something exhaust/stun for 3 minutes is pretty frickin viable.
Hi, This is my first Monster Hunter game. Is this weapon the best for noob players? I say that because you dont need to put your sword away to use potions and other items. Also how effective is the shield? Can it block all attacks?
Kind of, it’s a “jack of all trades” weapon, so it’s recommended you start with it and then pick a weapon from there, however it’s still viable for late game.
Paranormal Pete I guess it could be considered easiest in terms of complexity and moveset, but honestly choose whatever you think you’d like and experiment with all the different weapons. But yes the sword and shield is usually considered a noob weapon but is a very good weapon nonetheless
The shield is much weaker than the other shields in the game, and is I believe on par with Greatsword. You'll still block most of the damage, it's just that you'll also lose a lot of stamina; and if you don't have enough stamina to "cover the cost" you'll get hit anyway. (I THINK that's how it worked.)
I love the SnS and used that plus the HBG throughout Gen on the 3DS. SnS is beginner friendly but it also is fantastic late game with status SnS builds. If you have not already done it get the demo on the Switch eShop and start playing around so you can get a feel for the different weapons in a controlled environment.
Toasted Tater The ability to use an item anytime is such a lifesaver in G-rank quests, you can save a whole team with lifepowder. However most people don't use this feature and just spam the x button in attacks, which is sad. The sns is quite difficult to master because you have to stay still while doing the most damaging combo (RX -X-X-AAA) and positioning is something that takes time to understand.
Just curious, does chaos oil stack with item duration up (forgot the actual name, the one that extends item durations), since it basically works as a bunch of applied blade oils?
been playing this for like 150h+ and only as ranged doing a 2nd character so I can get used to Melee and I choose S&S to start it. using striker but I cant backjump. am I missing something?
They keep making SnS really great with buffs and such but I still can't bring myself to play it for some dumb reason. Capcom could come back and say "Guys, we've doubled all SnS motion value" essentially making it a great sword with near DB speed and Id still respond with "Neat! Still going to play CB and Funlance"
Honestly the oils give power to a weapon normaly overlooked and stigmatized as the ''beginner'' weapon. It's sad the oils didn't return in World nor are they returning to Rise. Atleast the new moves from World/Iceborne and some of the hunter arts are comming back in Rise so I guess that kinda makes up for it.
@@veritascalivmeir3708 Especially with how easy it is to slot in crit boost and slugger on SnS builds, those skills combined with oils would be too much.
I can't do the backwards evade. Is the control different on the switch? I don't even see it in the manual. Striker Style. Hold on a sec, I think I see it now, it's a Guild Style move. Oh my god you actually mention you lose the back evade in the video I'm a dork.
Gaijin Hunter, first you say the "bread and butter combo" is (R+X), X (THREE times), A (3 times). A little later in the video during the aerial style, you say "... The bread and butter combo of X, X, A, A, A." So which is the best/main/B&B Combo? The difference may make a difference, but I'm not sure which because of motion values (which I don't understand very well either). Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks!
Now I know that SnS's strong suit is abusing elements and status but IF one was to go with a raw SnS, what would be the best way to go about that? I'm talking weapon choice and good skills. Perhaps the silverwind SnS with razorsharp or the bloodbath SnS with negative crit?
Something I’ve always wondered about these vids, how do you get these motion values figured out? MHGU’s interface is a _little bit_ difficult to get around, so apologies if there’s an obvious answer for this
It’s a good question and for games with it guide books we did it with stones. I have a video that covers it look for motion values gaijinhunter and it should pop up ! ^^
Is it weird that I actually enjoy Aerial SnS over Aerial Switch Axe? I know Aerial SA only loses the axe thrust and everything else stays intact, and it does the aerial vaults better but I find Aerial SnS more satisfying, somehow.
I came in here 100% certain the "changes" would be they nerfed the hell out of the oils.

Also didnt know about the extra sharpness modifier and the wind immunity you get with the X+A attack, guess you never stop learning these weapon specific details, like LS giving you hi windproof when attacking
Mh wild demo is just around the corner
Sns mains will rise to POWER!!!
No charge+X infinite combo? MH4U was in baby mode when I did it.
Oh man Chaos Oil is going to be intense. Both getting and using.
Damn guess I can't go 2 bed because a fellow dual blade user is gonna try out that sword and shield thingy
The obvious best weapon.
Little info : Adept SnS is DOPE AF and... i Main it, pretty powerful
lvl3 chaos oil is a nightmare to get, but lvl2 is still busted.
Just got into the game and I’m loving it just wish I had people to play with
Hop online, trust me there are plenty of people playing. Especially since people are coming from world.
You can also heal after a roll or ax attack . Or use and item
Just curious, does chaos oil stack with item duration up (forgot the actual name, the one that extends item durations), since it basically works as a bunch of applied blade oils?
i love your tutorials, i almost put this game down but now i can't stop playing it. thanks broski
I really wasn't interested in alchemy style, but alchemy SnS might change that.
Update: alchemy style changed that. I’m a SnS main now.
Damn, I didn't realize how potent the SnS was!
been playing this for like 150h+ and only as ranged
doing a 2nd character so I can get used to Melee and I choose S&S to start it. using striker but I cant backjump. am I missing something?
Yeah how do I do the backjump charge
I feel like i would get along well with striker sinze it is basically old school mecanics (2gen) with a bunch of flashy super moves to spice up
I think I'll stick to Adept.
I like the jumping in and out aerial attacks too much, and it really jells well with my gf playing aerial SA/HH.
Thanks again for the guides, GaijinHunter 😚
Well shit i came here to learn about alchemy style for sns but learned so much fucking more, thanks gaijin you got yourself a new sub!
About to play MHGU through using sns, guild style, no arts. Old school.
Coming here to brush up lol.
Played generations years ago! Is there zelda DLC that we should expect for this one?
(i don't know if mhXX received it in Japan)
gunslingingmuffin yes
gunslingingmuffin Capcom uploaded a video showing off
The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild DLC Armor
Honestly the oils give power to a weapon normaly overlooked and stigmatized as the ''beginner'' weapon.
It's sad the oils didn't return in World nor are they returning to Rise.
Atleast the new moves from World/Iceborne and some of the hunter arts are comming back in Rise so I guess that kinda makes up for it.
Perfect rush is obscenely powerful as is, oils would just be silly on top of that
@@veritascalivmeir3708 Especially with how easy it is to slot in crit boost and slugger on SnS builds, those skills combined with oils would be too much.
I almost had a heart attack when I saw the quest you need to beat for lv3 chaos oil. Please no...
I can't way to rub oil all over my long, smooth...Sword and Shield! What did you think I was going to say?
Tai Penn I prefer it hard tbh
and also sharp ;)
Tai Penn your wee wee
pee pee
Tai Penn "long"
Yes yes yes Sword and Shield tutorial yes!
I can't do the backwards evade. Is the control different on the switch? I don't even see it in the manual. Striker Style. Hold on a sec, I think I see it now, it's a Guild Style move. Oh my god you actually mention you lose the back evade in the video I'm a dork.
R+X then X 3 times? did you mean 2 times since you then say it avoids the 3rd hit of the X combo?
Yeah. Surely he meant "X+A" instead of "R+X"
well... it's not like i wanted to use chaos oil III anyway...
So now I gotta give SnS another try after watching this video!
8 more days I’m so hype
Gaijin Hunter, first you say the "bread and butter combo" is (R+X), X (THREE times), A (3 times). A little later in the video during the aerial style, you say "... The bread and butter combo of X, X, A, A, A." So which is the best/main/B&B Combo? The difference may make a difference, but I'm not sure which because of motion values (which I don't understand very well either). Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks!
The best combo R+X, X, X, A, A, A. It's so much faster and you'll be tripping monsters left and right.
@@MillenniumEarl014 okay, thanks a lot! :D
A little too late too ask, but what are the motion values for the new Valor attacks for SnS?
Is it weird that I actually enjoy Aerial SnS over Aerial Switch Axe?
I know Aerial SA only loses the axe thrust and everything else stays intact, and it does the aerial vaults better but I find Aerial SnS more satisfying, somehow.
18:20 sns be like: i wanna be DB for one day
I was waiting for this video since yesterday's, and I wasn't disappointed :)
My favorite weapon.
