Not the defences of course, those had been manned and reinforced a hundred times over, so that the walls would hold. But the Chaplains and Apothecarion that were consecrating the dead were short on manpower. Verillion looked out over the bodies lined up on their pyres. There were thousands of them. He had been part of several larger wars, but he had never seen this many dead lined up at once. The workload had gotten so large that he and several other Librarians had joined in to help their brothers deal with the bodies. Now he moved amongst the pyres, each adorned by either a human or an Astartes that would never move again. The silence that hung over them as they worked was oppressive, and had spread all over the defensive works. There was no laughter, there were no singing soldiers. Even the Chaplains were silent, choosing to recite the rites of the fallen in their minds, for only the spirits to hear. It had been decreed that every soldier that had fallen and whose body was recovered would undergo a traditional Agrennoni funeral, as a show of respect. It did not matter whether they were Guardsmen or Astartes, they would be treated like one of their brothers. It was a beautiful sentiment, Verillion agreed to that, but it made it notably more painful that several of their own dead were missing, their bodies lost to the Outskirts and the outer walls. As he moved from body to body to apply the markings that would ease their spirits' passing, he counted only a little over two hundred of their own. The reported casualties were somewhere closer to six hundred. Amongst the recovered bodies were a handful of Apothecaries, as they had moved out en masse in order to recover the geneseed of the slain if nothing else. It was still needed after all. Their lives were given so that the chapter had a future, and their sacrifices had seen them marked with some of the highest honours for their funeral. Some of. The highest honours went to the slain of the Wardens of Thu'Akal, as they had at every turn given their lives to safeguard those of their allies. It had seen their own chapter reduced to a little over two hundred Astartes left. They had been called away from the city to ensure their own survival, but the survivors had not quit the city yet. They wanted to see off their fallen brothers. Verillion did not blame them for that. Many of his own brothers that had been recalled from the city had chosen to remain for the service as well. Both the 2nd and 4th companies yet remained in the city. They were prepared to leave at any moment, yet still they had not done so. Verillion knew that both Lord-Captains had good reasons to keep their company around for it. Both companies had lost many of their numbers in the initial assault, and even more in the subsequent battle for the Outskirts. It was only natural that however few of their fallen that had been recovered, they were sent onward by the brothers they had been closest to. That, and Verillion knew that Eckhart had been close to one of the Overseers of the Wardens that had been placed on one of the pyres. He would not leave without making sure his friend had received a proper funeral. It took almost a full day for the pyres to finally be lit, and the flames finally rose, they did not die until deep in the night. During that time, by some miracle the enemy did not attack. Whether this was out of some margin of respect for the defenders, or simply because they themselves had to regroup for their next assault, no one really knew. The next day the defenders manned the walls again, preparing for the next stage of the Siege. As the morning broke and the ashes of the funeral pyres slowly went cold, the rumble of engines could be heard, rising from the Outskirts. The battle would soon continue.
