Strings have always been my favorite part of the orchestra. Each instrument does somthing different in order to bring music to life, but there's always been somthing special about strings to me. Maybe it's the way that they bring out the passion of the music itself. And when it's backed with counter instruments like piano, percussion, or chior, it makes for some of the most majestic sounds in to be heard in an orchestra.
Strings have such a beautiful, unique ability to be able to build and convey emotion. They can be soft, delicate, mournful, sorrowful or quiet. Yet they can build to a shattering, devastating, emotional climax within the same song. The emotions that the strings can elicit from you, from sadness, grief, anger, passion and more, is truly astounding.

Strings and flutes sure elevate the sound
Strings are very similar in sound to the human voice. This makes sense since strings are played by making strings vibrate, and speech is made by making the tissues in our throat vibrate. In other words, they both require something soft and elastic to vibrate (compared to brass or a wooden reed, which are stiff).
I wonder if this might play a part as to why strings seem to have a soulful quality to them. Often times, if you play a cello around a baby or a pet, they will react to it because they think that it is a man's voice.
The vibration of the stings go through us , we all vibrate, it speaks to us in ways we can't imagine

Intermission: End of an Age (part 1/2 since the comment was too long. Both parts are in this comment section, and I love to get feedback on them)
200 years before the Fall of Stormguard, the place that would after be known as Uriel's rest
So far the plan had worked, of course it had. Darius was no fool, he had seen to that.
Uriel had personally prepared him to be his successor, and now that things were out of the old Angel's hands, everyone could see that the Lord-Captain fulfilled his role perfectly.
Uriel's reign was ending. He'd known that for a while now. When his Angels of Sanctity fell on this planet, it had been all too obvious to him. But someone like him did not just retire. He could not just step back and waste away, his pride and his blood did not allow for that. He would go out in a blaze of glory, a sacrifice that would inspire others for generations to come.
That was why he was here, with only few of his brothers, each of them from the older generations. These were tired men, who had seen too much. They each wore different colours from their brothers. Black, lined with silver. It signified mourning. Each of these men had served for centuries in the Mortis Squads, the keepers of the dead, responsible for retrieving their fallen brothers from the battlefield. Any who took up the Shroud of Mourning had suffered a personal tragedy, great enough to motivate them to dedicate their lives to the honoured dead.
So it was that even before the battle started, Uriel could almost see the Spectre of Death hanging over the battlefield. It was not an ominous presence, nor even a hindrance. It hung over them like the presence of an old friend, welcoming them, spurring them onwards, telling them that it was alright, after this their duty was over and they could rest. It was a welcome thought, as it motivated them.
Before that day, Uriel had often found himself lost in thought and memories. It had at times been said that he was a dead man walking, and Uriel could not exactly deny that claim. It was ironic how the prospect of a good death made him come alive again, almost as if he had given up on that notion before. Now he stood tall, as impressive a figure as he had ever been. He moved his wings around to make sure the bronze contraptions still worked, and found that they moved as smoothly as always, moreso even, as if they were also looking forward to the battle to come.
He stood alone, away from his brothers, a king clad in silver and bronze. His axe glimmered in the light of several fires that were being lit all across the lines. The golden laurels around his helmet shone with a hungry glow. To those that glanced his way, it was almost as if the Lord of Last Light had reverted back to his younger self, when he had won victory after victory on the front lines, at times on his own even.
They had dug in when the enemy made their move. Even just a glance showed that the Rotstruck Host had overcommitted their forces. Darius had not oversold Vaxor's anger. If anything, they had underestimated how badly the Master of the Host wanted him dead. The forces the Host had lost had not just angered him, it had made him hungry for a trophy, something to lord over the Blades until the end of their days. Not only his Iron Fist and Nobles were spotted, but at least several hundreds of Astartes that did not wear the Terminator armour of the Hosts elite. They had tried to advance under the cover of darkness, after night had fallen over what had once been the center of the Imperial defence of this world. It hadn't worked of course. When it came to stealth, the Blades of the Last Light were far more adept than the Rotstruck Host. The very fact that they had shown up here was evidence of that fact.
Uriel smiled. Such a toll to reap. They'd have to sell it though, had to lure the enemy in. That was the only way for the trap to work.
Uriel did not even have to give the order. Fire was opened all across the lines. Every member of their sacrificial force had been given weaponry to match their foes. Bolters were replaced with plasma and meltaguns, and bolt pistols had been exchanged for inferno pistols. What was more important was that every one of them had been given a power weapon, usually a sword, for when the enemy closed into melee range.
Melee was a prospect they all very much looked forward to, but until that moment they unloaded the lethal heath into the enemy lines. Several of the Hosts soldiers fell in those opening volleys, burning. The members of the Iron Fist did not scream in pain however. Even as they did, they did so in absolute silence, only making way for the soldiers behind them. And even through the wall of incoming fire, the advance of the Host could not be halted. They reached the Blades before the guns ran out of ammunition.
When the melee started, Uriel joined the lines laughing as he did so. He spread his wings and engaged his jump pack, diving down onto the first enemy he could find. His axe dug deep into the foe's flesh, leaving the two halves of the body to each fall to a different direction.
His next blow met resistance as a sword was raised to block it, but the blow wasn't stopped. Instead it shattered the raised sword and took the head off the man who had wielded it. Uriel used the Angelus Boltgun mounted on his left arm to place three shots into his next foe. Each round detonated when they dug into the flesh behind weak spots in the target's armour. All the while, Uriel did not stop laughing.
It was not a malicious laugh, not filled with the bloodlust that ran through the blood of all of his brothers. It was the sound of genuine joy, echoing across the battlefield. Even the otherwise dour brothers of the Mortis Squads could not ignore it. They soon took after their Lord, laughing as they fought. They had never realised it before, but this was the exact moment they had always been waiting for. They would die here, not one of them doubted that, but they would make a difference in the process. That was all they could have asked for.
Swords flashed in the dark, as power fields seared through armour and flesh. The Host had made a big mistake in conducting this battle. Not only had they overcommitted their forces, but they had seen the small number of enemies gathered here and deemed it an easy battle. But these men were old and an Astartes only grew old for one reason: he was good. In order for one of their brothers to grow old, they had to survive warzone after warzone, and these men had done just that. Not by sitting back, of course. Many thought the Mortis Squads came in after the battle to collect the dead, but they would also collect the dead from battlefields that had seen their brothers defeated. It was a testament to the skills of these warriors that they had done so and survived for hundreds of years.
And those skills were put to good use, as they brought down foe after foe, selling their lives dearly. Every inch of ground the Host won was won through blood, but they did gain ground. Kept gaining ground until the moment Uriel had been waiting for. He'd started out with fifty of his brothers. Looking around now, he saw only fourteen left, including himself. Yet he did not stop laughing. One of his brothers fell beside him and he still kept laughing. Because he knew what came next.
As the horde of enemies prepared to overrun the Lord of Last Light, he took off his helmet and dropped it on the ground, raising his axe in a challenge to the monsters. It was not just to let his gray hair fly in the wind one last time, but also to show the enemy a last taunt.
The Lord of Last Light was still smiling. And he continued to do so as the ground started to shake under his feet. He continued to fight and laugh as the earth opened up to reveal a sudden burst of light. He even struck down another foe as the fire of thousands of explosives being detonated at once engulfed him. The last thing many of the Host's warriors heard was not the explosion that took their lives. It was the mocking laugh of the old Lord of Last Light, as his age came to an end.

A day after Uriel's Last Stand, the place now known as Uriel's rest
Darius stood atop the rocks overlooking the torn apart landscape "And the Host is in full retreat?"
The newly promoted Lord-Captain Eckhart nodded, not yet accustomed to the weight of his new armour "Yes, the losses they took seem to have crippled their force to an extent where they are no longer confident in fighting us."
Darius nodded. Several other Lord-Captains were gathered around him, waiting for his orders. Their stares seemed to burn right through him, as if they all knew the same thing he did. He was not Uriel, nor would he ever be Uriel.
But he did know what Uriel would have them do at a time like this "Have the fleet pursue and shoot down as many enemy vessels as they can. I also want the remaining Mortis Squads here. And have the Chaplains prepare for a funeral that would be fit for the Emperor himself."
The others simply bowed and left without a word. It was when he was alone that Darius saw a glimmer among the rubble. It was a hungry glow, that seemed to reflect a fire that wasn't truly there. As Darius came closer to the object, he saw it was Uriel's helmet. The golden laurels still seemed hungry for battle, even after their master had died.
After the funerals, during the same night another, far smaller ceremony was held. Only the Chief Librarian, the High Priest and the High Chaplain were there to see the supplicant give his oath. Sektekh simply smiled upon hearing the words that their chapter had held as sacred for so long, before placing the brand on the supplicant's face.
Darius did not even flinch as the hot metal burned the flesh of his left temple and forever adorned his skin with the winged blood drop that would signify him as the Lord of Last Light, until the day he died.
After the mark was set, he simply placed Uriel's old helmet over his head, finishing the ceremony as he stood up. He was a new man now, adorned in a newly crafted armour. His new weapon had to wait for now, however. While Uriel's axe had been retrieved, it had been broken beyond repair.
Given their new Lord's preference for swords, Techmarines had decided to use the metal to forge a new relic, a truly unique weapon. This took time though, so Darius would have to wait. Luckily, Darius was a patient man. Or rather, he had decided to be a patient man from now on.
As the Lord of Last Light, he would have to play his part perfectly from now on, to guide his brothers.
After all, their glory days were over now, and with the death of Uriel, they would never return.
He would have to lead the Blades through the nightmare to come.
He thought back on the oath he had taken but moments ago, and nodded to himself. It was time to give this world back to its people.
The Blades left the grove where Darius had ascended to his new rank, but a legend was born there that day amongst the Adraxians.
It was said that on a warm summer night, a whispered oath could be heard in the rustling of the leaves.
"I am the Light in the Dark.
I am the Blade against Chaos and the Death of the Xenos.
I am the Instrument of the Emperor's will, and I shall guide my brothers in His name.
I am the Lord of Last Light and in the Emperor's name, let none survive my Wrath."

The bleak fields of death lay before her. Deaths Handmaidens went to and fro, carrying the souls of the fallen with them. The sky was dark, swelling grey clouds threatened to burst and leak tears for the brave who would be remembered not. Yet the loss was not for nothing. Behind her stood the one thing she had vowed to protect, the one thing her darkened heart bled for.

It has always been my experience that when I click on a new mix, I find at least one of the tracks to be a disappointment...... well, that was just blown out of the water. This is the finest blend of spectacular mood enhancers, seamlessly transitioning from one piece to the other, all the way thru the end of track 15. The only disappointment here, is that it didn't have more to enjoy. Well done!!!
