Great drummer! I don't compare drummers like Gadd, Cobham, Peart, Chambers, Weckle, etc. They all have their own sound, style, personality, perspective, and techniques. I just enjoy these guys and draw what I can from them. There is no best, but there are the top players.
When I hear so often, Neil Peart is the best drummer in the world, or John Bonham, I'm like SHUT UP ! So many people obviously never seen Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Caliauto ( or however the f*ck it's spelled ), Mike Mangini, Marco Minimann, and many others I can't think of at the moment.( don't get me wrong, I love Neil Peart ) I first saw Dave at a drum clinic in Montreal back in the 80's and was blown away, I'd never seen drumming at that level before then, also saw him at the jazzfest with Chick Corea, he's just amazing !
like i always say, it has nothing to do with "good" or "better", its just what all this cats play in THEIR music, how they get their voice and their touch set into the music and the mix. Probably Dave would not sound so "godlike" when he would have played with Rush (happened to Danny Carrey) or with Led Zeppelin. Im sure, there is no "BEST" drummer who would sound the best with ANY band on this planet......
He really is a true king and innovator of the drum set. I had the pleasure of meeting him last summer in California and received his top-notch instruction not only is he one of the most incredible and legendary drummers of the day, but also very kind, hilarious and just an all-around incredible person as a whole.
Dave you don't have to play the drums so fast, or use so many back handed flamadiddles, because Dave... you're good enough, you're smart enough and dog gonnit, people like you.

Amazing how much he sounds like Gadd here, and then has evolved into very much his own thing over the years. Weckl is a true Master.

I saw his clinic and show with chick corea in boulder in about 1990. Influenced me big. Never got very good though
