Great idea to provide updated reviews of locos and rolling stock after some operating experiences on your layout - I'm sure a lot of folk will find this very helpful.
I agree, more should do this as it gives us longer term feedback as well as the manufacturers potentially finding things their own testing could not because there's so many variables to consider. Comparing future batches as well to see if any improvements or regression occur.
The first Midland Mainline HST, for me. I have to admit, that’s based on having collected the full 8 coach set, and obviously the 2 power units. Gives a satisfyingly long train. I have to say though, my favourite livery, was a non livery. The naked Pendolinos I saw coming through Macclesfield totally blew me away. What a beautiful train. Sometimes less is more.
I just Impulse bought a Farish HST with 8 coaches this morning in Great Western livery, can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it. I am sleeping next to the letter box for next 2 days and will be living on bread and water for a month.... ;p.. GNER looks great for me, so does First Great Western. I think that lots of White on the models really makes them look Naff, very plastic and toy like, same with white Pullman roofs. Lots of white on the Great Western I just bought, but I doubt I will brave enough to chance weathering it. Great Vid as always. I will be very pleased if I can get my layout as half as good as yours... It's like living artwork.. Keep up the good work.
Hi Dave, excellent video as usual. I really like the idea of a later follow up video on your new models. It really annoys me when all these online companies ask for feedback 10 minutes after its been delivered. I always try and use any product for a while before I take the time to provide some feedback. Happy modelling!
Good to see you did not melt in the heat. I think the original livery is the best for the 91 and like you did not like the GNER blue but looking back I now think it was good and 2nd best they have carried The new revised LNER livery looks great I saw the first set in real, you will have to get down here to York and see one though, I hear the plan to run them to Newcastle has been scrapped. The bushes do look really good and better than ones I have seen ready made. I have made my own and they turned out OK as well as cheaper. The way prices are going we need more tips like this on how to save money. My model shop owner said his sales have now fallen, £50 for a guards van and he has to buy a pack of 4 and £70 for a seacow he fears he will be struggling to sell them.
I like the reflective aspect of the model review - we’ve all been there with the excitement of a new model “it’s the best” but the reality of running a loco or rolling stock after a few weeks is really useful.
Hi. Thank you. Bizarrely we’ve been nominated in hornby awards 2022. www.keymodelworld.com/article/hornby-magazine-model-railway-awards-2022 It’s just a bit of fun. But I really appreciate you being so kind about my layout. Cheers Dave
Great video again Dave. My lner dvt has that blob on the roof. I'm emailing hornby to see what their response will be otherwise it'll be weathered out somehow. The gner coaches do look very nice but the interior is just plain, I'm afraid it's another painting job if you're fitting lights and passengers, however I do enjoy doing that sort of job during the winter months atb Andy
Don’t accept it. It’s not cheap and it should therefore be spot on. These issues seem to surround the LNER ones, more than the rest. Let hornby have it!! They need to know models they pay the factory for are coming out damaged.

As always, love the layout. As someone who grew up alongside the WMCL (within throwing distance of the Vulcan Locomotive Works (or as my late dad called it-The Deltic Maternity Ward)), I’d love to see any example of the Class 81’s to Class 85’s plying their trade around such an excellent late. Keep up the excellent reviews.
Unfortunately so far unless you want to get really old models or delve into 3d printed bodies or resin bodies class 85 is the only option rtr currently.
A very valid point on reviews, you wonder why no one else had thought of it. The seafoam trees look great, something I'll need to look at. Out of the 3 liveries, I like the GNER.
Very interesting video Dave, its always a pleasure, I like the idea of revisiting some of your reviews, it shows how well the rolling stock and locomotive stand up to use. Your attention to detail is amazing and as I've said before the layout is not only a work of art and a credit to you. Looking forward to seeing the next one already. Eddy xx
Another excellent video covering lots of different topics and interests, your control panel looks so professional, I and others are well impressed. Your scratch building and electronics are well equally impressive, it makes things look so real. It's been noticeable how much more money our hobby costs these days, and my modelling skills are definitely no where near your league, so I'm just satisfied to run my Hornby Dublo layout and buy the odd runnable item here and there. Many thanks for sharing Dave, I like the LNER livery that's being used now best.
Cheers David. Thanks for those very kind and encouraging words. It’s great to know people enjoy watch what I do. I love making my model railway. I’ve been nominated for the hornby magazine awards for 2022 as the best you to be channel. While it’s up to people to vote, I’m am just flattered to be nominated. And I thank anyone who has voted for me. The current LNER is attractive. It really suits the mk4 coaches.
Nice video. Having a few different topics is a great solution to avoiding any particular one 'dragging' at all. The updates on reviews is indeed an excellent idea. Most reviewers 'review and run', so the flaws are never picked up. For a few reviewers, that's specifically what they want anyway...
Cracking running shots. Have you done a video on the stonework in the opening shots of the intro? It’s a cracking paint job. I’m following your tutorial on the “Great Wall of dean park” but I am interested to see how you did the other wall. Thanks 🙏
Hi, that wall is actually a printed wall! From scalescene. I don’t think many people, me inc would be able to recreate that lol. I’ll be turning my hand to stone painting at some point. There is a stone wall and building I’d really like to do, so I’ll be practising it and getting samples at some point…so much to do! 😆 Really glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video Dave - the Hornby Class 91 do seem good models along with MK 4 coaches - apart from the plastic Pantograph - although for some reason I'm not taken with Class 90' 91's in real life - love the HST's , class 47s, 56,s and 81's - 87's.
Whilst Scottish railways and the ecml have typically been outside of my areas of knowledge or interests generally (growing up in South East London kinda means i have preference for 3rd rail for the most part, though I live in the Warwickshire so am used to the wcml too), i always liked the gner livery quite a bit. Should it be orange or red however? Like I say a bit outside my area, but I thought they were orange unless my memory or colour balance is off? In terms of virgin liveries i always rather liked the original one they had, suited the former br stock nicely i felt. The modern avanti livery is a bit... well I'm not quite sure what it is! I really like the returned review, definitely keep this up!
GNER all the way for me. Grew up with it! The hunt couplings are just what I’ll need for the set when I take delivery of the coaches- the gaps with the standard couplers are huge. Hope to see the new LNER or East Coast grey liveries released in time. 225 running session when all your coaches have arrived? 😉
Another great video Dave. Thanks especially for the Hunts Coupling demo. I’m expecting delivery of my LNER DVT & coaches tomorrow to go with my ‘For The Fallen’ 91 so have ordered up a set of the Hunts Couplings. Having a small 8x5 layout anything which minimises the faff of removing rolling stock from the layout has to be worth the investment. Cheers too for testing out suitable decoders for the DVT. I’ve now got a Dapol Imperium all set to install when the DVT arrives. I think your GNER set looks great. If I hadn’t already financially committed to the LNER stock I’d have liked to add it to my collection too. I may have to be ruthless and sell some stock to reinvest.
what really struck me having not paid any attention to it before is the GNER livery, it looks lovely, might have to investigate another raid on the credit card !
Thank you for another really enjoyable and informative video. Yet again it appears Hornby quality control is letting their models down, I wonder when they will finally act and sort things out? Hopefully cooler weather soon so you can spend more time in the loft.
Hi Dave, thanks for taking the time to put your videos together, really interesting and inspirational. Did you make the panel cover yourself, i was wondering if you had a tutorial on that process?
@@DeanParkyou/they did a great job. would you have the details of the firm that did the cutting please? Do you plan on or have you ever had open viewing days?
We seem to see a lot of the same parts of the layout in your videos, it would be nice to see the trains running around the layout over longer distances and therefore seeing the rest of the layout at the same time, not a criticism just a observation.
Loving your videos. Going back to video 255 (DCC Concepts Alpha controls) I'd like to ask you a few questions: i) which socket on the Ecos do you use to plug in the sniffer adapter and what sort of lead is required? ii) Is the RJ12 a "reversed" lead (ie. pins 1-6 go to pins 6-1) as someone has suggested? Thanks...........Steve.
GNER for me. I don’t have overhead wires on my layout so won’t be getting the 91 & Mk4s, but my GNER HST is a favourite. I like the idea of follow-up reviews too.
Really enjoyed this video Dave, those sea foam bushes looked really nice, going to try those myself thanks to your video. Looking forward to your future council estate build as those estates are prominent on most railways at some point especially in large towns and cities. Are we going to see more flats or houses on the estate? Or is it going to be a surprise? 😀👍🏻
I'd consider a GNER rake if hornby would do a 91/0 and the mk4s without the red doors; however, I have a swallow rake and an east coast rake of the older tooling, so I don't really fancy a 3rd 2+9 set. I am however considering a TfW rake with a super detailed 67 to match, since my only 67 is lima and the rake is shorter.
I say the swallow livery was the best on the 225! But, regards the white round the grille on the DVT, initially 82200 had that white, but it was changed.
Great update on the layout overall Dave, a really nice looking control panel, the new mk4s and the DVT look nice, I won’t be getting the new mk4s personally due to already having eight of the original ones released by hornby but I will be on the look out for the new 91 and the DVT in swallow and from what I have heard the colours of the new 91 and the old mk4s look the same so when I do get the loco and DVT when paired up with my old mk4 coaches they should make a decent looking train, nice looking trees, I have had my deltic for some time now and I’m very happy with mine but it hasn’t been without issues, my main issue was the chains which I stated in your review of the model I had actually glued the attachments to the body so they don’t fall off, bachmanns new class 37 shows that chains on OO gauge modes can be done much better but overall I’m happy with my deltic and the chains have been much better since my decision to glue the attachments to the body.
Just a question about something that caught my eye on your videos: Wouldn't the overhead wires on the lower electrified track (if they would exist) be a bit too high to fit through the tunnel at 24:20? Because on the videos it looks like they would. Same with the station roof. This is no critisism by the way, i'm just curious about it.
Hi, cheers for getting in touch. When designing the layout the need for clearance Of the wires was on my mind. I’ve worked it out that the contact wire would clear the roof and tunnel, using the dapol masts as a guide. But there is a bit of artistic licence needed if these were to be fitted. I was governed by the height of the tunnel portals and height of the raised section. Model railways… a continued fight between accuracy and comprises :-( Cheers. Dave
Great video Dave, as always! Quick question which you, or other viewers may be able to help, where do you actually get "Seafoam" shrubbery from. I was actually looking to grow my own, to have a good continuous supply, but the seeds are restricted and cannot be imported into Australia. I went on to eBay, but again I think there may be restrictions regarding its importation. Any Australian viewers to the channel, or yourself, may have some thoughts perhaps. Is there an alternative plant(s) just as effective? Regards Stephen
i use the same method for my trees and bushes and hedgerows ,but in 1/32 scale for my layout ,its a very cheap option compared to ready made stuff ,i find twigs ect for the tree trunks
Is the piano gloss black not difficult to keep clean? Or, once it's set up, do you not have to touch it (in theory) again? I have purchased some seafoam, but still not used it yet as I've been making trees with dead Meadowsweet (and other wildflower) stems and it grows everywhere! I've been having some success with cheap supermarket dried parsley, corriander, etc for leaves and using cheap hairspray for adhesive. You may have gathered I'm a tight arse!!! You're right though, what you've produced is better looking, and no two the same, than many commercially available trees and bushes. Also been making home made ground foam with yellow car sponges, appropriate shades of tester pot greens and an ebay coffee grinder. Great video update Dave
The LNER mk4 looks fantastic but I have reasently got the new transport for Wales in ex LNER mk4 livery but it's a shame that Hornby haven't put lights in the coaches
I don’t know if you own or rent but have you looked into a mini- split AC unit for the loft? It’s basically a small heat pump for small areas like sheds and RV units
Hi Dean, just finished watching your video. I was wondering if you could advise if you have a video of how you made the tunnel entrance on your layout in your video? It's just over 11 mins in. I was wondering if you could advise what materials you used also? I am in the process of deciding in what way to construct the tunnel entrance.
where did you get the signage for the telecomms training centre? i've got something similar on my layout, but can't seem to find any signage for it in network rail
What happened to Richard from Everard Junction? I Haven't seen anything new from his channel in a while, hope he's OK. Maybe you can call and check on him for us please.
No. I have used those same two pieces of music for years. Look back my videos. And anyway. They are free from RUclips so Sam is free to use them as am I.
Great update dave really appreciate you sharing this with us. For me I'm a big fan of the GNER livery class 91 probably my favourite but I did like seeing the 91 in the intercity back in the early 90s at Peterborough. The layout looking brilliant I do like the control panels you have instord and I'm happy you have found a solution for the squeaky wheels from the cavalax tankers. Look forward to the next one kind regards Gary@leicesterstationandtmd.
Cheers. Yeah no more squeaks…hope it continues lol. I HATED the gner livery to start with as it was ending the swallow livery. But it grew on me and I think it’s a classic.
A bit disappointing if a brand new tooled model is inaccurate. A bit like the Bachmann DRS DBSO but of course that involves changes in the lighting while the Swallow DVT is much less complicated

Cheers. Piano black is ok. I just dust it now and again and it’s easy cleaned with a microfiber cloth.
wonderful video
Great video Dave. Can I just ask about the GNER DVT model? What is the white dome on the roof for? Is it some sort of cover ? Cheers, George
I believe it’s a communications dome, for on board wifi etc.
@@DeanPark You are right Dave it is.
Nice. You know you can grow your own seafoam for trees too?
Cheers. Yeah I’ve heard about that. but I dont have enough time to be a gardener and cut my grass as it is, and be a modeller 😆
Hi Dave, which decoder have you used in your Hornby Mk4 DVTs? Thank you Andy
Hi I have gone with a Bachmann 21 pin.
Great video Dave. What decoder did you used on your dvt?
I used a standard bachmann 21 pin, light for cab F5. Dapol imperium 6 function is also a good one.
Best livery i would say GNER gold with intercity very close 2nd than LNER
Hi Dean, just finished watching your video. I was wondering if you could advise if you have a video of how you made the tunnel entrance on your layout in your video? It's just over 11 mins in. I was wondering if you could advise what materials you used also? I am in the process of deciding in what way to construct the tunnel entrance.
Hi the tunnel and walls was covered in a video/s a while ago, the red brick ones are over 3 years old.
where did you get the signage for the telecomms training centre? i've got something similar on my layout, but can't seem to find any signage for it in network rail
Hi, I looked for her logo and made it myself. Colour printer, cut and fixed to a 1mm piece of plastic, with brass legs.
Your Francis Bourgeois’s mentor
Lol! Oh I’m really flattered!!!!
Great update.. Way to many adverts...
What happened to Richard from Everard Junction? I Haven't seen anything new from his channel in a while, hope he's OK. Maybe you can call and check on him for us please.
Richard has a full time job and other interests outside his model rail hobby. He will post when he has something to show.
If I didn't have a problem with Hornby I'd get the GNER livery and the intercity livery sets
You appear to be borrowing lift music from Sams trains?.
No. I have used those same two pieces of music for years. Look back my videos. And anyway. They are free from RUclips so Sam is free to use them as am I.
intercity swallow can't be betten on these models.
That’s hornby go to you! :-(
sad to say but the hobby is now getting to pricey. its getting out of control another great video though dave
Cheers. Oh it’s not ‘getting out of hand’….it IS ALREADY there :-( all my pre orders are coming out at once and it’s costing me an arm and a leg. :-(
