Firstly many thanks for the trip you took. As someone who lived in Inverness for 2 years this was great. I was in the Army so my unit were all from the likes of Perth, Dundee and the surrounding area.
Also I fully agree about the MK 3s. When GWR had their last days of HSTs out of Paddington a friend and I took a HST and an 800 on the same day. The 800 was no where near as quiet or comfortable.
I don't know if you know this but there is a record for a HST doing the Paddington to Reading run and for years now they have tried to break it with the 800. As far as I know they still haven't done it!.

I'm old enough to remember Railwatch. Mike Smith hosted, Rob Curling was in York control, roving reporters were Malcolm Mckeaig and Penny Bustin, with Paul Coia doing some live reports. John Swaeby was the driver they followed that week. Power car 43108 was named "BBC Television railwatch". The "plates" remained on the car for a few weeks after the show ended, as they weren't plates, but vinyl stickers, that eventually wore off! I believe all five episodes are here on RUclips!

Nice video Dave. Me & the boy had a ride out to Aberdeen & back from Waverley in August 2021. Had a trip to Queensferry to see the forth rail bridge & then a ride across. They’ve done a superb job with the HST’s , a serious step up on the turbostars / 158’s. Always forget what a underrated route Edinburgh - Aberdeen is , the views etc are stunning. Had the pleasure of 43003 on the ride back , while it’s sister is stuffed in the NRM , one half of 253001 out earning its keep. We are up in Edinburgh again this month , me & the boy going for a day out to Mallaig which should be a epic trip. I did Edinburgh to Inverness back in 1991 with a ride north on the 1000 IC225 Flying a Scotsman 10/8/91 caught the Clansman up at Waverley which was heavily delayed as the 47 wasn’t playing ball , we limped to Perth & there they stuck on a Dutch liveried 37 with the 47 rigged up to supply the erg /lighting & the full might of the 37 for driving , absolutist inspired bit of running seeing us claw back some 30 mins of the delay given it was shifting the 47 & a 10 coach EBW set was no mean feat., had about an hour in Inverness & then back out on the Royal Highlander sleeper back to Euston.

    Hi Dave
Great update as usual, & I really enjoyed the HST footage. It’s sad to learn the HST’s are now on borrowed time. Living in Derby, and starting employment at BREL in 1976, the HST coaches were the first project I worked on, as a new build, together with the Mk3’s.
Still the most comfortable ride on the network even today and will be sorely missed by this punter anyway !
I’ve been a regular visitor over the last 20 yrs to the highlands, and have completed all the journeys you showed us, several of them made on the 7 cities HST’s. Together with my wife, we have enjoyed countless visits to Inverness, & taken in Aberdeen, Dundee, Oban, the Highland line to Wick & Thurso to name a few. Great stuff !
The Class 91 is stunning. Sadly, it won’t sit right on my early 2000’s DRS based layout, but I am starting to collect stock nowadays whether it fits or not as you do, the Hornby Dublo Flying Scotsman being an example, Perhaps this 91 may be my next purchase.
Looking forward already to the next update.

You will of passed the small house we used to stay in between Aberdeen and Inverness just after the River Spey girder bridge Sadly I found it on maps now derelict. Brought back happy memories of holidays up there in stunning scenery and wild life. The HST is the best train we have and lucky you got lots of them to ride on. I hope to get a trip on one before they too are gone. You have to laugh at Hornby so good at adding detail but putting the driver on the wrong side they should get out more and see the real railways like you did, there is so much to learn from a day out by train. Good to see both steam locomotives on Dean Park depot Rail tour coming up? The weathering looks good and I like the vans not surprised it took so long to paint them.

Brilliant weathering tutorial. I do enjoy the fact that we seem to have gone off the airbrush everything approach and are now enjoying seeming the older methods come back to the fore.
As an Englishman from Chester but living in Newcastle, I have visited Scotland and indeed the highlands many times a year for the past few. Wild camping from various stations on the Far North, Highland main line and the West Highland line. I strongly recommend a trip on the Jacobite if you haven't already. Droplights are a lovely aspect to be able to take in the views on this trip and I've normally found I can have choice of sides during the journey apart from Glenfinnan viaduct of course. I also love seeing the HSTs enjoying a swansong - the livery is superb as well. I fear they may not last the rest of the decade, much as I want them too and believe they deserve to. It's always a treat to board these rather than a 158 or 170. That being said the far north 158#s have a good configuration with lots of tables aligned to the windows.

When my wife and I toured northern England and the Pennines, she found the hills strange and disturbing, because she comes from Canada, where the "Canadian Shield" - which is the same, geologically as the Cambrian Shield is still mostly forested - whereas in all of England and Scotland, the hills have been laid bare by shipbuilding and the highland clearances. One of my best rail memories was in the 90s taking the train from Manchester to Glasgow and then to Mallaig, to visit the Isle of Skye, then from Kyle of Localsh to Inverness (alongside Loch Ness), and then to Aberdeen, down to Edinburgh, then the ECML down to York, and back to Manchester.

When deweathering, is the flavour of the IPA important? Would you perhaps get quicker results with raspberry? 😂

Excellent, are you going to paint your 'Scoonie van' wheels? The photo of the real van were black, not silver.

They were silver when the van was painted … but we’re never cleaned

Hi Dave thanks for sharing this video especially the section on weathering your Judd wagons, have used sponge technique when applying `rust look` to the outside but not when covering brush strokes to the inner so thanks for this so will be trying that out soon. The Hornby class 91 looks stunning and enjoyed the running section. Take care and stay safe regards Barry..

They are from CR signals, but he never has any in stock anymore! Think he’s selling his business. The other good ones (but are a bit more expansive) at Absolute Aspects. Or train tech do them too.
