I always found it odd that when they did these anniversary shows, they left out the Alternative Era from 93-96. That was an era in Z100 history that shouldnt be ignored. As top 40 music was getting stale in the early 90s, alternative music carried the station for a few yrs. In fact , Z100 in 1995 was Rolling Stone radio station of the year, that consisted of predominantly Alternative music.
I remember this period. In some ways alternative rock became Top 40. That and R&B were the big genres at the time. But I do remember thinking it was strange that they leaned so heavily on the rock. I liked it since that's what I was listening to at the time, but don't recall if it was mixed in with other stuff (Ace of Base, Mariah Carey, etc.)? I think I was also listening to Z100, K-Rock, and WPST in Trenton NJ at the time, which was pure Top 40.
Kid Kelly is the best in the business, and a true radio pioneer! I still miss hearing him on Z100 FM in New York City!
