I do most of my driving in town and charge my Bolt in my garage. Whenever I go on a road trip, DC fast charging takes less than an hour which is totally fine - there's always things you can do in the meantime, like go shopping, or replace liquids in your system, or just stretch your legs. So, I have no real reason to bitch about the Bolt's charging rate. For me, this car is a masterpiece through and through.

The nicest thing about the ergonomics of my 2019 Bolt is that it has no foot well at all. The Tesla Model 3 and Model S and Mustang Mach E and the VW ID4 all have foot wells. Foot wells require a little side wall below the doors that you have to lift your foot and leg up and over it to get out of those cars-- for my long thick legs this is prohibitive to deal with the obstructive bottom of the steering wheel when I try to lift my long legs and big feet up and over the foot well side walls to get out of those cars. They have stuck with the original battery pack and it may be that those batteries simply do not allow for a higher rate of charge. To know what the 50 kilowatt peak rate of charge really means you would need the time figure for going from 20% to 80% of charge.

You're exactly correct. they really didn't have a choice except to use the same pack that they had because the next generation of battery is going to be the Ultium battery. and I don't believe that the plant that's going to build those batteries is even finished being constructed yet.
you're also correct that the charging curve is actually relatively good even though the peak charging isn't that fantastic. I've watched a few other RUclipsrs who have compared a bolt to a Kia E Niro which Peak charges at 75 KW.
Their experience was that in real world situations on a real road trip the difference in time spent at chargers was negligible between those two.
I think GM looked at the fact that 99% of the time people are driving only around town. And that's why they increased the AC charging. So the one or two times per year that somebody takes a road trip are they really going to care that they spent a little extra time at a charger? the big win is the price point.
I also think that these are going to make absolutely fantastic rideshare cars for people because they have good backseat room and decent cargo.

I drove one yesterday and it was an okay experience, not particularly exceptional. At 5’6 I’m not tall at all and yet I managed to hit my head coming out of the vehicle in the rear.
The seats seems stiff and a bit cramped, and the cargo space was tight. We all know about the dismal charging speed but if you don’t go hundreds of miles at a time and need to get their fast and on time you’ll be okay. The interior was as boring as could be.
With taxes and all that it came to $38,000. For $8K more I could step into an ID.4 or a Hyundai Ionic 5 and be truly pleased with everything. The EUV struck me as the kind of car you settle for not the kind of car you actually want. If I’m gonna settle for something in the EV market I’ll buy it sub-$20K Bolt. But if I get near the $40,000 mark it had better be a jaw dropping vehicle.
All that said and even despite the slow charging the 2023’s MSRP of $26k is an incredible bargain on an overall excellent car. And currently GM has 0% for 60 months plus a free level 2 charger installed.

Hey Kyle. I've taken my Bolt to the SF Bay Area (from Los Angeles) twice, San Diego 3 times, and the dessert 3 times. I'm going to Phoenix in 3 weeks. It takes about an hour to go from 0 to 80%, and less time to go from 20% to 80%. As you know all of these cars start tapering off around 80% so doing simple math doesn't always work out in real life.
You can take the Bolt on a road trip anywhere you can find DC charging, and lots of people do it. Yes, the charging takes longer, but half the chargers out there are 62kW, and folks with faster charging cars get stuck with chargers that don't output what they are supposed to. And yes, faster charging would be great but I'm not willing to pay almost twice as much for it.
There is a reason that Edmunds just made the Bolt EV of the year for 2023. It does virtually everything the Porsche Tycan, and Tesla Model Y can do, for HALF THE PRICE !!
Again, stick to the facts and talk about them from anyone's perspective. Not all of us can afford the luxury EV' that you have. And the new Ultium platform will be the game changer for GM.

Kyle, you probably have never driven or been in the sub-compact SUV Buick Encore. Only the driver gets a very narrow arm rest attached to the driver's seat, the passenger side gets no arm rest at all. Also the interior is cramped compared to the Bolt EV. So our 2017 Bolt EV felt much more specious than the Buick Encore. The Bolt EUV would and should be classified as a sub-compact SUV.
Also, My partner and I take several long distance trips a year in our 2017 Bolt EV and we got in the habit of combining full to 100% charging sessions with each meal, breakfast and lunch and sometimes dinner (depending on how far we want to go in a day), and then at a destination charger over night at a hotel. It has worked out really well. Slow down, relax, and enjoy the trip with a 55kW maximum charge rate, it's really not inconvenient at all for people only taking long road trips 2 to 3 times a year. I'd love to see you film a road trip in the Bolt EUV and do it they way I described and see what you think using it's navigation system, to see how it is.

These in the top trims compare to a Model 3 SR+ so it's just good for some consumers to keep that in mind. Some people only do city driving, so these would be fine for that, but some people go on quite a few longer trips a year and at this point Tesla is still a ways ahead in that aspect.

The battery chemistry doesn't allow for charging at that rate. GM's new battery tech will take care of it. Long distance is doable with planning and it's very rare for 95% of people to take frequent long trips. For my situation my '17 Bolt is perfect and in my area of local errands. No EV exists yet that will let me take one on a vacation in the places I want to go. There just isn't any infrastructure there yet unless I take my plug-in L2 ClipperCreek and spend half my vacation time scrounging for a way to charge. Fast charge on highways is worthless to me since I don't vacation on highways. What we need is Gov't offering grants for businesses to put in charge stations everywhere.

    • @aardvarkansaw
      @aardvarkansaw 2 года назад +3

A 80 mile round trip is no problem for a Bolt--that commute for me would cost me about $2.65 worth of home charged kilowatts. Charging at home--If you can run an 8 gauge 40 amp 240 volt line from your breaker box to your home charging location and then mount a Level II AC EVSE there you will be all set. If you have cold snowy Winters where you live--then it may or may not be necessary to change the tires to a type that is more friendly to the Winter climate where you live. I pay 0.129 cents per kilowatt to charge at home--and each Kilowatt of charge allows me to drive between 2.8 to 5.2 miles. So easing around town at 25 to 35 MPH the effective range will be about 5.2 miles per kilowatt or about 340 miles of total range. Driving at about 61 MPH without the heat or AC on will give you the EPA range of the car--either 248 or 259 miles of range. Using the heater or AC will usually decrease the range by about 16%--but only for the time the heater or AC is actually on--when your turn the AC or the heater off then that 16% of range is restored. This is all from my experience on my 2019 Bolt Premiere that has had the battery replacement recall done over a month ago. I like my bolt just fine and recommend the car.

I believe it's because in the US, rear brake lights cannot be on a movable surface. On the EUV, the lights flip up with the hatch, and would therefore be illegal.
Basically, they would either need to block off part of the hatch cargo access to fix the lights in place, or redesign the rear lighting entirely. Since it's all-new bodywork, maybe that would have been better.

Hey Kyle, I have a Bolt EUV, some thoughts. I got it for the increased rear seat leg room, and slightly longer wheelbase. Cargo was not important, but rear seat comfort was.
"Sport" mode noticably improves accelerator response off the line. None of you reviewers have tried it to feel the difference, and I suspect make 0>60 times a bit faster.
All of you bag on front wheel drive, but as someone whose life was probably saved with it, going back almost 50 years, I don't give a rats ass about "drifting" or other forms of "fun." Y'all never talk about rear wheel fishtail with RWD cars, or how if one starts hydroplaning, you're screwed. With FWD, no matter what the traction situation is, simply point the wheels in the direction you want to go, and push the accelerator. FWD will 'yank" you back to safety, while RWD leaves you helpless trying to regain steering controll of a car that's rear wheel have decided they want to go a different direction.
GM did the bumper tail/signal lights because having stop lights that come on separate from "tail" lights makes it more likely that the person behind will SEE them, safety. Yes it's "strange" but most safety innovations are at first.
Also, it;s labeled EUV, not SUV. And given that most SUV's soild in the sunbelt are only two wheel drive, and usually the rear wheels, again, FWD is better, much better. My brother lives in one of the most remote parts of the east, on the shoulder of Mt. Mitchell, (highest mountain in the east), 15 miles from any mobile phone signal, and the last two miles to his house is a single lane gravel/dirt road. His Bolt with winter tires gets him in and out, even in snow, with just FWD. So I REALLY wish all of you would stop bagging on FWD. A RWD car in the same situation is a lot more dangerous as it's much more prone to slipping and sliding out of control.
Keep up the great reviews, but try to be a bit more subjective. Thanks, Ed

After 4.5K in rebates from the State of CA 2k and 2.5K(sticker Income reqs) Our OTD cost will be 32K plus free L2 install(up to 1000$) We put a big down due to the value of 2014 Flex (basically drove it almost for free) minus gas and insurance) With Gas being 6$ here in CA gas saving alone will just about cover our Payment. After 5 years its pure profit.

My understanding is the lower price is due to the battery. But I do wish there were option for a battery that charged faster.

In US market alone, we need much more EVs to replace 300 million ICEs. If we only sale one million EVs per year, it would take at least more than 300 years to do so. That's why we need at least sale 10 million EVs per year in US, even in this way, it would probably take at least more than 30 years to replace the current ICEs, maybe longer than 50 years. I strongly suggest our leaders to consider these facts and numbers.

    • @fluffysheap

They're in such short supply right now that the actual answer is "whatever you can find." The expiring tax credit and production backlog during the recall has made them as rare as hen's teeth.
If you need to put passengers in the back seat regularly, or you want super cruise, the EUV is better. Otherwise the EV is better. They both have the mickey mouse unsafe brake lights. If you're willing to modify your brand new car so it's actually safe, it's the best value in EVs.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of fast charging. But if you lease it and find that's just a huge deal breaker, you can just switch to the new bolt when your lease is up. I'm really thinking hard about doing this because I just mill around town and that's it.

I would like all the tail lights lit, but there's more contrast the way it is. I'd rather have the lower price than the faster charging. Funny that lane keep warns if you're no looking. I know he knows 0-100% is no a legit fast charger spec.

they are milking this LG platform for all its worth, and if you are okay with the fast charging speed it's one of the best values out there. Kyle seems pretty unimpressed but he doesn't seem to give enough credit to GM, as usual. They make a small affordable EV, it's too small and "doesn't have the latest tech". They make a Hummer EV with the latest tech and its "too big" and "too expensive". Kyle is going to have an aneurysm when the electric Equinox comes out. Hey Kyle? If the electric Equinox ends up being awesome, will you actually admit it?
