I spend a week with the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV to find out what it's like to live with the most affordable EV in America. On paper it's impressive, starting at just $28,795 before the federal tax credit while still doing 247 miles of range and being quicker than the average family crossover. So what's the catch? There's only one big drawback to the Bolt EUV, but if you can live with it, you get the best electric vehicle bargain currently available in 2023. What do you think about the 2023 Bolt EUV? Thanks to Chevy for providing this vehicle to review!

The Bolt EUV cargo area is, in fact, not roomier than the regular Bolt. They are the same size. There are 3 inches extra in the back seat and 3 extra inches in the hood. That's it.

This isn't actually right. The numerical cargo volume is the same because of the way the cargo volume is calculated. There is a formula they have to follow to report that number. In reality, the cargo space is roomier.

FYI for anyone buying a bolt in March 2023: there have been a few dozen incidents of "boot lock" in Bolts built between 2020 and 2023. A "boot lock" is when the car's computer systems freeze during initial power-on. When this happens in the Bolt, you can't put the car in gear, you can't disengage the parking brake, roll the windows up or down, or open the rear hatch. Pressing the Power button again won't break the lock-up either. Evidence from many owners suggests that this happens - occasionally, on some Bolts - when the driver is in a hurry and puts the car in Drive or Reverse before the power-on-self-test routine is completed. To break the boot lock if it happens to you, you need to detach one or the other of the terminal clamps (use a 10mm wrench for this), from the 12 volt battery, wait 2 minutes, then re-attach the cable to the battery. This will re-set the clock back to midnight and you'll have to reset it, but it should break the boot lock and let you start the car into normal operation. This is obviously a glitch in the car's operating system software somewhere in the computer, and GM is aware of the problem, but apparently they haven't been able to locate and correct it in the computer code yet.
To prevent a boot lock from happening, all you have to do is allow enough time (15 seconds is usually enough) for the car to complete the power-on self test before letting off the parking brake and selecting a drive or reverse mode. You will know when the POST is completed when all the indicators, digital gauges, and warning lights on the instrument panel stabilize and the "ready" light is on.

I’ve watched 100 videos about Bolts and other EV’s and yours is one of the Best! Love your honest yet positive enthusiasm. I’ve had our 2023 Premier for a month, drive it everywhere, everyday and love every minute of it. Silky smooth, quick and quiet ride. I traded in our 2020 Fit which was a nice runabout but the Chevy sits a little higher, great view of the road and very easy to drive. It also feels bigger and more secure on the highway. 99.9% of our driving is within 30 miles but I kept our hybrid CRV for longer trips for the time being. This gives us a chance to drive both types of vehicles for comparison but I can say after the first thousand miles the all EV will be our future. As battery range and infrastructure improvements continue there will be no reason to fill up with gas, get oil changes etc.etc. Etc.
    Best of luck and Thanks!

I just bought a 2023 Bolt EV with the L2 package. Love this car! We got the $7500 tax credit plus a Chevrolet paid Level 2 48 Amp charger upgrade to my garage wiring (does not include the actual charger). Cost of the car $24,000!!! Just found your channel and really enjoyed your review! Last June I leased for my son (new driver) the Bolt EV 1LT cause of the standard features and safety equipment we got for the price! The level 2 instal by Chevy was the bonus and sealed the deal. We all love this vehicle at home and when he’s not using it, we do… we plan on buying it out at the end of the lease term and my Bolt EUV Premier RedLine is coming late July with a state rebate of 4K and 0 sales tax making this car under 30k for me. Deal of the century with all the EUV offers . Case use for me 92-115 miles per day, rare road-trips over 300 miles (1-2x per year) and home charging available… considered a Tesla but without the need to road trip, Bolt made more sense on many different fronts…

I just bought this car in metallic blue. I just love this car. The price is by far the best in EV value. Gov. incentives knocked 10k off the price, and Chevy pays 1250 for a level 2 charger. The only real caveat IMO is the slower fast charging for trips. But I have a Toyota hybrid for long trips. So for me 99%of my driving will be in this car. I just had solar panels installed, so my garage, w the sun, is my new gas station. ⛽️

Great review. This is what I recommend to pretty much anyone with a lower budget who doesn't road trip a lot looking to get into an EV. I had a 2019 Bolt and the biggest downside was the absolutely awful seats, but they appear to have remedied that. Everything else about it was a great practical daily driver, and the EUV is even better with more room and available Super Cruise (which at the risk of being attacked by Tesla fanboys, is objectively much better than Auto Pilot 😃)

I’m back after driving our Bolt for over 1000 miles and having the 240 charger installed and paid for by Chevy. Bottom line, this is the best car we’ve ever driven. My wife just loves it for its smooth ride, total comfort, safety features and Bose sound system. It feels great on the interstate and that’s a big deal. I see these tiny little smart cars and mini’s and I appreciate the intention to save on the use of gas but WOW this Bolt gives the feeling of a full size car and all I do is plug it in for a few hours a week. It’s funny that you mention the Equinox because I’m looking forward to driving that when it comes out to see if I will trade in our CRV Hybrid. I mean, the CRV Hybrid has been a great car but once you go EV there is no reason to use any gas or oil etc. All Electric only makes sense and I hope and expect that the technologies including increased battery/mileage capacity will continue to improve.

People complain about charging but the Bolt's efficiency makes it perfect for those of us with renewables to charge at home and get the most miles per kWh. When we take a trip we have to charge a little longer, for the few times that happens it's not a problem. We had two Bolt EV's before the EUV and never had any problems with any of our Bolts, just great, dependable cars - perfect for us. We don't want an Equinox - too big, more than we need and it will be a couple of years before their price drops to the point that they come close to the Bolt, hope GM keeps making it!

GM even paid to have a professionally installed Outlet put in the house to charge it. It'll charge up fully in about seven hours with the charger I use it's great.

Even though the electrics might cost a little, you get up to $1,000 in putting in an EV charger plug. this is an amazing benefit. it also comes wih level 1 & 2 chargers in the boot from what I'm told. these are hard to locate with the $7,500 (which hyundai, kia, mini, bmw, benz, any car built in japan like nissan ayria). Government is stupid usually, but giving out the $7500 only to n american manufactured cars is smart. i hope they soon exclude mexico. i had to settle on colour, but got one by monitoring the inventory site.

I didn't expect that the interior still so much borrows from the Opel Corsa electric. Even after GM and Opel went their separate ways. The Instrument cluster housing is basically the same shape; the middle air vents as well are similarly narrow. The way the satnav is integrated is similar. As well as the buttons above the gear buttons (the ones for ESC, etc).

The 55 kW maximum DC charge rate is because the Bolt's battery is made by LG - it's not the Ultium battery that will be in the Equinox and Tahoe EV next year. The LG battery isn't a poor quality unit, it's just that it isn't as tolerant of high-energy charging as Tesla's battery. GM wants to give owners a long warranty on the battery, and with the 55 kW maximum charge rate, the battery should still retain 80% of it's charge capacity at 100,000 miles. People with EV's that can accept charge at 150kW or more, are sacrificing long-term reliability for convenience. If you try to only charge an EV at home on L1 or L2, and only use L3 fast charging when you absolutely have to, the battery will last at least 25% longer before it drops below 80% capacity.

Public charging is more plentiful in some places than others but there's over 130,000 public chargers in America currently with more being added every day.

Could not find one with sun&sound. have redline in black. Two quibbles: the screen dims when pulling in garage at dusk & forward camera can't see (may be setting). Brake/blinker lights are legal, but low.
