Hey Doug, here are a few things you should consider when reviewing evs:
-Does it have a heat pump? This can really make the difference in cold weather range and performance
-Level 3 charge ability/speed. Most new evs will have level 3 ability but the speed at which they charge can vary greatly. For example, the Bolts can do about 50kwh max while the Kona can do around 70kwh, and the rates seem to be increasing with newer models all the time. This can have a big impact on how long you need to charge on a road trip.
-Battery cooling. Regulating battery temperature is one of the most important things in maintaining battery health. Almost all evs use liquid cooling...except the Leaf. Do not buy a Leaf.
I just bought a 2020 Bolt and had to look into all these things before deciding to buy it. I really like it so far even though there are better things on the market now.
Anyway I'm sure you won't read ths ridiculously long comment but love the videos!
Doug is most definitely not the best resource for choosing an EV. His reviews are still useful, but he doesn't cover the fundamentals of what makes a good EV. For that I think Bjørn Nyland is the best.
Wow this is very well thought out and good to know!
I own a 2017 … it's been a wonderful car, but if you ever want to take it outside of its range, you need to get a Tesla for the supercharging network. The level 3 charging network is too unreliable for road trips no matter what all these reviewers say.
I think the Doug missed the ‘value’ argument in this one. The crazy good value is in the new Bolt EV at $31,995. A good EV for around town driving that does the basics well.
Once you move into the vehicle being reviewed here, it’s anywhere between 2-4K more than a comparable Model 3 SR+. It’s hard to argue the Bolt is better ‘value’ at a higher price with all around less features and capabilities. The paltry DC fast charging speed of 55KW compared to the Tesla’s 170KW is just one of them. Tesla is also expected to add driver monitoring with their existing interior camera on the Model 3 which will take back the crown from super cruise in terms of convenience.
Technically, there is no such thing as "level 3" charging. There is level 1 and 2 AC, and level 1 and 2 DC. Level 2 AC is using the built-in charger of the car and is limited. The car can sit for a few hours and charge. DC charging is level 2 also, but much much faster. Typically where you see the 50, 100, 150+ kw charging stations. Unfortunately, the Bolt is still limited to 50kw max DC charging.
It seems like Doug just enjoys saying “Bolt EUV” over and over again

I feel the same. We used the brake light are one packed with tailights
yeah when i saw them i immediately thought that some people driving behind this car will not realise when it's braking/indicating because the brake lights & indicators are not where most people would expect them to be. this seems like they're choosing design over safety.
@@SeanWithaFada it's not even design, it looks tacky in my opinion, like if it was in addition to the normal lights then sure, but it's not, it's just change for no reason
I thought GM had already learned their lesson from this. Cars like the 1979 Malibu wagon were deemed to have a less than optimal brake light mounting placement in the bumper. All the newer model wagons had higher brake light placement. When GM changed from the G1500 van to the Express and Savana vans all the brake lights were moved higher too. I guess the current engineers have nothing to do with the engineers of 30 years ago and the lesson will have to be learned all over again. I just cannot support a company like this.
I agree. I had a driver who cut me off and it wasn’t until they proceeded to the next lane that I saw that low positioned turn signal. I couldn’t see the signal because they were in the blind spot on my passenger side. In California ppl love to signal the last minute and with this type of turn signal it’s dangerous.
every time I watch Doug's video I checked if I accidently set the video speed to higher than normal and realized that it's in normal speed.
That's because Doug's the type of guy who operates at the correct speed, by default.

They are so bad that I had to Google chevy bolt taillight malfunction. That is what led me to find out that in fact the tail light design was intentional. I read on a forum that a lady has been pulled over twice and rear ended once due to this incompetent design.
Hyundai and Kia are also doing it in their newer cars, and yes it is very stupid and dangerous
The outer design is the kind of "yeah, that's good enough. Now I am off to the pub" look.

I think it’s because the standard of speed has improved so much over the last three years.
Even the base model Tesla three and Y are the doing five seconds 0-60
And not just Tesla’s, cars in general, He probably adjusts to the improving curve because of his lifestyle so those 6 second plus cars are losing their oomph
General Motors produced a car 35 years ago that had the aerodynamic qualities of a brick, a V-6, that seated five people, that could hit 60 MPH in *under 5 seconds* - and it was a Buick, lol. I realize "quick" is, for some, a relative term. However, to use it on a car that takes six and a half seconds to hit 60 MPH, well... that relative must have been adopted sight unseen.
I was thinking similarly... but just from an "objectiv" point of view. 7 Sec 0-60 is considerably fast in my opinion.
Guess at one point we say: "oh its above 3 seconds: it's sooo slow" :D :D

It's true, especially with a car this small, you really don't need it. The only benefit I could see would be opening it from like 20 ft away with the remote so it's open by the time you get there
I get the same feeling with dampened tailgates on trucks. Makes no sense to me why I’d want it to open slower.
I think the main benefit is being able to close it with the push of a button
Chevrolet: puts brake lights where they can't be seen in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
"That's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them"
I think someone inside GM just wants to see the world burn. So many people are going to get rear ended in this car it might actually change legislation so brake lights must be obvious and the only rear facing lights on the car.
Yeah that's a design flaw in my opinion and something I absolutely see being a massive issue in the future
Technically, we shouldn't be so close to a car that we can't see the whole back of the car in front of us.
@@dbmabe that’s not the problem. The BIGGER lights that LOOK like brake lights aren’t actually the brake lights. The smaller bumper lights will never be noticed in heavy traffic.
those are reflectors... one of regulation that all cars required to have in the states.
Great review Doug. I own a 2017 Bolt EV which has been a great car. I actually think this EUV is better looking than the EV model, but that is a matter of preference. Seems like a great value and believe this will be a terrific vehicle for Chevrolet. The two things Chevrolet needs to add is all wheel drive option, and a faster charging system. I do think you scored it a little low for fun factor however as I find it very fun to drive and it has better acceleration than most gas cars. Thanks again!
I guess that GM couldn't make AWD affordably, but I think even if it was overpriced it would be a good halo option to improve Bolts image.
Has yours had any problems
@@bigess I have had no problems and still love my Bolt EV. Of course, GM has had the battery recall, and my battery was replaced a few months ago with a brand new higher range batter with a new 8 year warranty. But I hadn't noticed much if any degradation of battery range after 4 years. I really believe these batteries will last a long time. The Bolt is great as a commuter and city car or for day trips within it's range. I personally would probably consider a Tesla or a gas car for cross country trips however until we get a better infrastructure of charging stations and faster chargers. I have fast charged my Bolt several times, and it works great with charging it to 80% within an hour.
Thanks Doug! I drove up to pick up my son at school with my new bolt EUV and presented it to him how you did!
I screamed out to him, “this is the Chevrolet Bolt EUV! We had a good laugh! I just picked up my Bolt EUV premier in Mosiac Black with a Black/Blue interior pleather, it was 38,500 MSRP, Rotolo Chevrolet in Fontana, California sold it to me for MSRP. Surprisingly, they didn’t nag me about any all of the unneeded extras such as ceramic coating, extended warranties, or any other crap add-ons. So far, I have 12K in rebates/GM discounts and I am still looking for more cash back. I ended up getting my car for net 26,500 + tax/fees, I’m happy. It can be done for a good price, it took me about a month and a half to wait for the car, etc., and I think it’s going to be worth it in the long run. I hated the idea of spending upwards of $60,000 on an way overpriced Tesla (so Elon can, “Occupy Mars”, I think that’s so foolish when we have so many more pressing issues down on earth, but I digress) that was still just going to get me from A to B, it seems like such a waste of money to be so “high-tech”.

As a car enthusiast having physical controls for things like the tailgate and having a large traction control off button, makes me feel like I am controlling the car to do what I want, not riding in the car and doing what it wants.
I have a power tailgate. Don't see the point really.
Exactly, I hate power tailgates, I think they're a drawback. They're slow as fuck, takes three times as much to open and close it than if I did it manually. Such a simple operation doesn't need to be powered.
I wish they hadn't discontinued the Volt and made an all-electric version of that car instead of the Bolt. I've always thought the first-gen Volt looked way better then any of these Bolt models.
This car got slammed but it's actually a really nice car would like to buy one
The lower break lights and turn signals are because of cost cutting reasons. As you said, they are required by regulation if the normal ones would move away with the trunk lid. So they make these required (fall back) ones the only working break and turn signal lights. In expensive cars with split rear lights (I.e. Audi Q7) you do have the regular lights AND the auxiliary lights below if the trunk lid is open.
Other cars without that redundancy are MINI countryman or some Korean models.
But it doesn't make sense because they have a tail lamp assembly on the quarter panels that don't move, where they clearly can put brake lights. Because they didn't, now it requires making 6 tail lamp assemblies with 6 circuit boards and 6 different wiring harnesses rather than 4. On a ferrari California or a q7 or a clubman or a lucid air I get it because they made the tailgade opening the entire width of the car. But on the bolt they didn't.
The fact that I'm genuinely looking forward to buying a used Chevy EV in the future is just... a weird feeling
You won’t be feeling much after you get one. These are extremely prone to getting rear ended with those dummy brake lights. People aren’t going to pay attention to the bumper lights and think it’s just a reflector or something.
@freepieanchipsgarage If that’s your only defense you must work for GM. The 3rd brake light is meant for drivers at a distance or behind a hill to see at first glance before the rest of the car is visible. I doubt you pay attention to the bumper of the car in front of you when driving in heavy traffic. You usually just look at the red brake lights that are already illuminated. If they never light up and it’s the lights in the bumper nobody is going to see that out the corner of their eye. Imagine someone switching lanes and getting behind one of these that started braking. You would crash right into it and never know the bumper lights even existed.
is not weird to think really considering they made the EV1 in the 00's (still a shame that they've killed those)
@@markm0000 if you’re paying attention to the road correctly ( good luck with that Americans. ) you would see the 3rd brake light. But i’m sure getting rear ended in this would be an issue with semi drivers but for an average car that is lower to the ground i think it would be just fine. but only time will tell.
This is why I luv youtube. You all make good points. With that said, virtually all rear end accidents are considered the fault of the rear driver.... Just saying..
It's kind of weird how normal electric cars have become in the past few years. Doug is reviewing this car as a small hatchback that just happens to be electric.
The idea that a Chevy Bolt scores lower than a Model 3 in terms of value is, to be frank, an insane indictment on the person doing the scoring lol
WHY is this STILL not available in Europe?! Chevy, I'm literally begging you, bring your European division back to life! This is simply a dream commuter for us! I'm tired of importing your amazing stuff myself.
No one would buy it here as simple as that. You have ev citroens opels nissans bmws and others that are made here so it's cheaper to buy than an imported chevy.
@@gergogorgicze2830 GM selling Opel to PSA was a mistake... Sure, they made a loss, but that was a great way to introduce American cars to us. The sale turned out great for Opel itself, but for GM, it feels like a disaster.
Yikes, why would you want Chevy's? You... like this? It's a hideous shitbox. You have plenty of your own hideous shitboxes to choose from. Hell, you can get much, much better cars than anything GM will build you nowadays.
Because they catch fire 🔥. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

So true, even worse, it works!
Always has been.
My car salesman watched one of Doug's videos and used his review to get me to buy a new car.
did you get it?
@@vladvulcan I did! 2020 Lincoln Corsair 48 hours after I watched Doug's video I bought it and had no plans on getting car so THANK YOU DOUG!

Bruh, that’s how I was a couple years ago. Now Doug is love, Doug is life.
Next time try the sport mode it adds a nice boost of power that can match or beat many cars on the street off the line. I really enjoy sport mode in my chevy Volt.
Is it just me or does this look like the illegitimate love child of a Prius and a random crossover
Every crossover be like:
And ugly

Yeah your comment is completely different
@@gamechip06 Yep I edited it to better express my feelings on it's styling
Welcome to 2021, where you can get a 2022 car 4 months into the year...
Maybe its a preproduction model made for review???
For real tho✅😂😂😂
(I agree jack)*
It's not out yet though
haha, meanwhile I'm hoping to get my 2021 bronco before 2022
Idk what’s going on with American Companies Rn but the cars coming out are actually really nice.
From the F-150 Powerboost to this.
It’s cool.
Seems they just don’t want to make sedans and coupes anymore though :(
@@1blackice1 Yeah..
Even though Chevy is known for bad quality and unreliability, I've heard good things about the Bolt. It's even rated higher than Tesla! Maybe electric cars are Chevy's thing 🤔
@@noahpehowic6080 styling definitely isn't a chevy thing this and the newer camaro looks horrifying.
Last and this years is belong to American CO (bronco lucid Rivian MachcE etc all of them are awesome)
I love how it doesn't have a giant overly expensive touchscreen in the middle of interior
My wife owns one of these and it has been a great family car for the year we’ve had it
great car! I personally am always excited for a new EV, even if it's from Chevrolet. also if you get to this comment where did you film this it's beautiful.
Probably Southern California

I'm glad GM is turning around from their days of crushing EV1's. Mary Barra is doing good work.
Doug, you can't remember which button is on top? Common now, I think with a little practice, you can succeed.
That rearview mirror technology just blown my mind.
Chevy marketing team yelling at the screen "IT'S NOT A HATCHBACK, IT'S AN EUV DOUG!"
Best thing about this car: It’s got proper buttons, switches and dials, which you can feel and operate while driving without taking your eye or attention off the road, unlike those touchscreens (fun fact: manufacturers install them because they are cheaper than proper switches), which are, quite frankly, downright dangerous to operate on the road.
Yea this is the reason I never want to get a Tesla, still waiting for a high end EV with proper knobs and buttons.
The new upcoming Ioniq 5 and Kia ev6 seem to have lots of physical buttons and stuff, and I believe the new Audi E tron GT also seems to have them
@@thatpersonsmusic Ioniq does not
"The model’s modular dashboard includes a 12-inch full-touch infotainment screen exempt of hard buttons and a hoodless 12-inch digital gauge cluster that displays EV-related information while driving, such as battery status and nearby charging stations. Adjacent to the digital gauge cluster is a metal insert that can accommodate a multi-purpose tray holder."
The Kia does, looks nice, thanks. I was checking out the Taycan and waiting to see what the new 5 Series EV looked like but the Kia looks good for a mid-range EV.
@@joeking5679 guess I got mixed up a bit

Doug, I, as many people do, watch most of your reviews. There are some things you should get right, as people make decisions based on what you do here. A base model Model 3 costs $37,990. Autopilot is included. 263 miles or range. If you want the driver assist function in the Bolt EUV you need to buy the launch edition, for which Chevrolet is hiding the price, as far as I can tell. It is surely more than the $38,485 "Premier," which has adaptive cruise control, but not Super Cruise. I would suspect that adding Super Cruise will push this price a few grand over 40K. The Tesla model 3 is considerably cheaper than the car you reviewed, and pitching this as the other way around to several hundred thousand viewers does them a disservice. It comes off as dishonest, or lazy.
The launch model ia sold out, pretty sure it was 41k, the premere version can get supercruise as a package, also as he's said, he perfers Supercruise to auto piolet because of the camera, so its more of a subjective descision. From what I've watched Tesla autopiolt is very flakey on city roads and personally I wouldn't trust my life to Elon Musk
Thanks for that info. 41K is more than $37,990, no matter how you feel about Elon Musk. Pitching the car he is reviewing as less is dishonest or lazy. This car is good "for the price point," is the theme of this video.
Quoth Doug: "It's no Tesla in terms of performance, or technology, or brand name, frankly, but it presents an attractive alternative at this price point, for people who want a lot of the benefits of an electric car without paying a fortune." Except it costs 4K more. Dishonest or lazy.
@@murdertooth11 Exactly what I was thinking. I think he just didn't do any research because all it took for me was a quick google search to find that the Bolt he reviewed is at least $43k. Not at all in the "$30k range" like he mentioned
That brake light design is stupid and seems potentially dangerous
Supercruise + practicality that's all I need! No need to be super fast
If I ever an riding a Bolt EUV I am making sure that my cup goes in the chosen cup holder. 🤣
Yeah the other cup holder is for the peasen- I mean passenger
10:33 mustang on the right side: rolling shutter effect! That's so cool!
Good catch Chaz!
I own a 2020 EV premiere. Most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Recall aside it’s a wonderful value. Cost me $14.60 to drive 623 miles over 8 days of commuting. Charging at home.
The term EUV is now permanently burned into my brain.
Seems like a great car for the money. I was honestly surprised of the interior being as nice as it is, and the features are pretty good.
He's gonna break his neck saying "EuV" 🥴🥴 every 30 seconds lmao 🤣😂😂
Ehh.. I'd cut my arm off before driving this..
This has got to be the most normal and modest review he has done so far.
For anyone interested, the super cruise is a $2,200 upgrade and only available on the premier and above trim levels (which start at $38,500).
There is only the LT and the Premier trim and honestly, I'd get it especially since you most likely will get the $7,500 credit for an EV car that the US govt gives out
@@pandamom6336 Chevy doesn't get that incentive anymore.
