yep that's because these engines didn't have any heater/glow plugs, used good old compression only to eventually make enough heat to get them going, if they had heater/glow plugs they'd start in seconds & with a lot less smoke
I use to travel on that bus from Commercial Road in Portsmouth to South Downs College in 1996. I guess it was one of the last mk1 Nationals to be sold off by First Hants and Dorset as it was one of the better ones. I miss the HOR and PCG Leyland Nationals as well as GCR727/728N. Good old times in my youth and will never forget the clatter of the 510 engine.
+1100HondaCB ... HOR 415L was a Leyland National that came within a foot of hitting me off my bicycle when I was 10 years old. I shot into the road and will NEVER forget the number plate of that bus. I saw it years later as a special events bus for Fareham College.
1991. I saw it at Fareham College years later in its silver livery and knew it was the one that nearly wiped me out. I last saw it in 2008 stored at HMS Collingwood. I'd like to know if it is still there or not. In fact, I'd like to go on board and hear that 510 start up.
There is no need whatsoever for a foot to the floor after the engine fired up Tim Moore! Will do a lot of damage long term to engine that is for sure my friend!
also depends how cold a day it is as well as these didn't have any heater/glow plugs, just cranked them till they eventually generated enough heat to ignite diesel
We had lot national,s out station, eastern counties,,lot would use easy start,,,always used a lighted rag on a stick up the in take,,,fired up up couple seconds,
Also probably less likely to have been ragged to death. Keep looking on ebay as they do come up now and again. An ex airport one might be tricky to find though.

The last proper diesel I've seen is the engine in the old Daf SB220's, they are gutless but sound like tanks, in fact they are tanks, because once they get going they don't want to stop haha. Check the videos on my channel and you will see what I mean, the SB220's can be dropping to bits, all the ones where I live certainly are but the engines are bulletproof, if they have the ZF gearbox they will work in harmony all day long, not like these new VDL's which are truly crap
Those 500 series engines were the biggest bag of shit ever to be assembled, they were useless and unreliable and cost Leyland millions in warranty claims and that's probably what finished them off, why they didn't stick to the old 680s is anyone's guess, they ran for years in trucks buses and trains with only the occasional head gasket problem but overall they were pretty good, not as good as a Gardner for reliability but a lot better to drive.
Nice to see a caring driver gently waking her up.
A hard starter with lots of smoke , nice :) Sounds good too , Nice old bus , nice to see it preserved :)
yep that's because these engines didn't have any heater/glow plugs, used good old compression only to eventually make enough heat to get them going, if they had heater/glow plugs they'd start in seconds & with a lot less smoke
I love hearing the 510 struggle to fire up and all the clag.
You could hear each piston popping to life one by one haha.
+James French the toughest bit on a leyland national is the starter motor. they outlive the engines
I love the sound of the Leyland National Great sound
if leyland put as much into the rest of their vehices as they did this starter motor, they'd still be around now!
Yes your right. It’s a wonder Ford didn’t go bust due to the old “banana” engine Transits inability to start cold after a few years use.😃
Wow that is a good old proper cold start I love it
Love the smoke! :-)
not bad when warmed up. the headless wonder engine.
I would hate to do a valve job on this engine. At least no head gaskets to blow.
You should see a Bristol VR on a cold morning!
+1100HondaCB or a leyland olympian a depot turns blue within a matter of minutes
Great Video Thanks I will change the headcode!

Acoustic Man What year did you have the near miss? HOR416L was donated to Fareham College and was turned into a 'cyber bus' and painted silver.
1991. I saw it at Fareham College years later in its silver livery and knew it was the one that nearly wiped me out. I last saw it in 2008 stored at HMS Collingwood. I'd like to know if it is still there or not. In fact, I'd like to go on board and hear that 510 start up.
I grew up with the MK2 Nationals with 0.680's and Gardners in them but have been on a few MK1 Nationals at shows. Very clattery.
I remember the HOR and PCG Nationals when they were brand new, travelling on them often. Also the GCR, PCG and JBP Nationals.
Hmmm that smells good
I used to have a Ford Transit that needed this much cranking every morning! Had 2 batteries constantly on charge just in case!
Nice gentle start not foot to the floor as most drivers did!
There is no need whatsoever for a foot to the floor after the engine fired up Tim Moore! Will do a lot of damage long term to engine that is for sure my friend!
I remember driving this on service.
Yep just as i remember them at least the driver didnt rev it flat out
What do you mean "sounds knackered?" That's a good 510, you should see how long it takes a tired one to start from cold.
also depends how cold a day it is as well as these didn't have any heater/glow plugs, just cranked them till they eventually generated enough heat to ignite diesel
They all do that Sir!
We had lot national,s out station, eastern counties,,lot would use easy start,,,always used a lighted rag on a stick up the in take,,,fired up up couple seconds,
Gardners dont need to be reved to warm up :) the driver understands that.
Only a littlw tap on the peddle will do it
It's not a Gardner. It's a Leyland 510.
Leyland 510 engine in this one.
I thought revving was done to build up air pressure.
I remember it well!
What engine does it have
were can i get hold of a leyland national..ex airport would be good(lwb) centre doors ....can any body help....
Also probably less likely to have been ragged to death. Keep looking on ebay as they do come up now and again. An ex airport one might be tricky to find though.
surprised this still exists, since halton transport was well known not be kind on buses
It is ex South Downs and then transferred to People's Provincial which then became First Bus. It was one of the better Nationals.

I thought the exhausts on 0.510 Nationals were at the back.
It is...

I see a Titan behind... In effect the double deck National.
this Ex Halton Transport No 35.

In my opinion, the AEC 760 mated with a 6 speed ZF was far better.
Proper diesel dont make them like that anymore
Can't somehow see Greta behind the wheel 😅😅

ja pierdolę, jaki ból dla tego silnika
Needs a lot of work that engine does!!
Are you sure? Maybe a good service is needed or new piston rings. I would have hoped it would have started far easier than this.
1100HondaCB nothing wrong with that in the slightest..one of the better starters!!
+Adam Bell nothing wrong with it!
***** Most Nationals were never properly maintained. I would expect this to start better than this.
nothing wrong at all! dont forget how old they are now! thats a good one right there.
There is something wrong with it trust me
