The thing that separates Fiona Apple from so many other musicians is that she doesn't just make music, she's a highly skilled and technical craftsperson. A composer, a technician. There are others who can do what she does, but people of her technical capability and calibre are generally very few and far between.
Her latest album ("Fetch the Bolt Cutters" for those who haven't heard it) made every current big-name singer/songwriter look like amateurs. I think she'll end up writing an avant-garde musical at some point or she might make a musical out of work. I'm probably just dreaming, but boy would it be amazing if she did.
Yes, she is so brilliant, every album of hers is amazing! I’d recommend several more from this album (Tidal) like “Shadowboxer” “Sleep To Dream” “Never is a Promise”, and from her other albums: “Fast As You Can” “Paper Bag” “I Know” “Extraordinary Machine” “O Sailor” “Tymps (The Sick In the Head Song)” “Not About Love” “Every Single Night” “Hot Knife” “Periphery” “Valentine” “Werewolf”, and from her most recent album (which is brilliant) “I Want You To Love Me” “Shameika” “Under The Table” “Ladies” ”Cosmonauts”…. I could go on! ❤
True, but how she was initially marketed turned me off to her music. Similar to PJ Harvey and even Alanis...they were marketed as the angry feminists in the 90s and for me personally it was turn off. PJ and Fiona ended up being two of my favorite female artists that came out of the 90s.
This whole album is fire (Tidal) . Fiona has had a rough life and has always been able to poetically express her feelings through her music. I think people forget she was only 17 when she wrote this. She’s such a beautiful, tortured soul. ❤
I'm not typically a contrarian, but the Beatles never did much for me. When Fiona Apple took this song on she opened my eyes to a lot of what the Beatles were doing that I hadn't appreciated previously.
Her then husband directed the fantastic video which is included on the bluray for yhe film Pleasantville as it was dine for the soundtrack. Great movie.
Thing about Fiona is that she cut through all the female singers out there. She was sultry and jazzy without sounding like a little girl, which most 90’s singers sounded like. Her music was on another level. Paper Bag, Fast as you Can, Shadowboxer, On the Bound are some of my favorite songs
Tori Amos was on par just a little different. I saw both live and they both delivered, the Fiona was probably at the end of her tour because her voice was wrecked. Damien Rice opened for her and he was superior that day.
One of the best-produced singles of the 90s. The bridge is particularly well-arranged. I guarantee there isn't a big producer alive who doesn't think of this as a hallmark song of the 90s. And Fiona Apple was the arranger. She's also a gifted pianist. Like seriously gifted. Her latest album will go down as one of the greatest of the 21st century.
Fiona Apple...the moody, depressed, bad girl lounge singer. She was so popular when she hit the scene. This video was on MTV every hour on the hour. It became very iconic. She's actually a mucial genius.
I don't think people who are just now discovering her understand how omnipresent she was when she hit and yet she never felt overplayed IMO. Just absolutely incredible.
I am pleasantly surprised that you picked this very original song from 1997. Both the song and video have a dark, forbidding, and mysterious undertone. And personally I thought Fiona Apple looked rather sultry and seductive….perfect for this video and song.
Her lyrics are so full of wonderful lines. I've always loved that one and from Paper Bag "He said it's all in your head and I said "so's everything" but he didn't get it".
"That's the best part, is when it feels like she's just kind of mesmerizing you with that very, very beautiful voice that she really knows how to use." Yes, exactly! She is amazing. Another great song from her to check out is Shadowboxer.
“what would an angel say the devil wants to know,” is my favorite line. Fast as you can. That should be the next song. The beat and instrumentation will knock your socks off.
She’s a fantastic singer, song writer, and musician. She was only 19 or so when this came out and the album won multiple Grammys. She won a Grammy just a couple of years ago for a recent album too. The 90s were full of amazing female singer/songwriters and she is definitely right up there with the best of them.
FUN FACT - Fiona wrote this song in 45 mins when she was 19 years old. I saw her in an interview and she said the song was about feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality.
She was only 17 years old when she wrote "Criminal" and all the rest of her songs on her debut album 'Tidal'. She was 18 years-old when the album was released.😊💖🙏

not only is she a unique and excellent singer she can play piano very well...I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she played piano on Bob Dylan's epic song A Murder Most Foul. Apparently she was so nervous to play her part on the song but Dylan told her "you are not here to be perfect...you are here to be you"

Fiona Apple. Way too smart for her own good, and one of the best lyricists of her/our generation. Just bars after bars, but poetry. (ESPECIALLY for only being 19 when she released this) The album was recorded from 1995-1996 and this single didn’t drop until 1997 so she was even younger when she wrote it. *1. She's an amazing poet! The last commentor is absolutely correct about her cover of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. A different side to her vocal range, very beautiful. And a super cool video to go with it.
This is classic 90s heroin chic and all us sad chick's in the 90s appreciated her. This whole album is a 10. Sleep To Dream is amazing but you can't go wrong.
Another 90's song for Female Fridays would be #1 Crush by Garbage, it has a simular vibe to this, and their song Only Happy When It Rains. outstanding band!
For more of that sexy, dark vibe there are a couple of other 90s ladies you might enjoy, "Down By the Water" by PJ Harvey and "Walk This World" by Heather Nova. I mean, there are lots of others, but those are two that immediately sprang to mind. Also, "Down By the Water" was featured in a Leonardo DiCaprio film that you should definitely check out, "Basketball Diaries." It is so so good and based on a true story.
PJ Harvey has quietly had one of the best careers of any rock musician of the past thirty years, in my opinion. "Down by the Water" is great. Her grunge-adjacent songs like "Man-Size" and "50 Ft. Queenie" would be a good introduction as well.
She is brilliant, and this song is the perfect example of her genius. I believe she was only 15 or 16years old when she wrote and recorded this song. If you listen to the production, you can hear the Beatles influence especially the piano and the outdo of the song. Her Lyrics are fantastic and to be able to write like that at such a young age is amazing. She has other songs that are very good, but this was her first and very best. 🕊❤️🎼
I saw Fiona in concert in the early 2000s and she was so high on something she was forgetting the lyrics to her own songs and would just hum parts or repeat the same lyrics. Still loved seeing her.
I remember hate this song for how often they used to play it on MTV, and then a friend came with the album Tidal, and I just fell in love with Fiona and heer music. She is so pure, so honest and talented! Of course this honesty cost her the fame 'cause she would never give her music up for the industry. Long live to Fiona Apple, the princess of rock.
Oh...I've been waiting and waiting for you to discover Fiona Apple. Her songs are amazing and you can tell that they are echos from her own experiences. Off the top of my head you should listen to "Fast As You Can", "Under The Table", "Every Single Night", "Paper Bag" and one of my all time favorites "Hot Knife" which is seldom referenced but wonderful.
This song takes me right back to my teenage years in the 90s - what a time to be alive! Also check out Paula Cole "This Fire" album is, well, FIRE!! Keep smiling y'all!!
One of the few singer/songwriters of the past 30 years you can actually describe as a genius. Her music only gets better with time. This video however was a freakin’ sensation, it played on MTV nonstop when it came out. Good times.

Wow. It's about time. Yeah it's me. The one always strongly encouraging people to react to more female artists. THIS is a real good example of why I keep doing that. Finally.
Fiona is an AMAZING songwriter. PLEASE check out more of her catalog. Really any of it is impressive. Her pain comes from being sexually assaulted as a teen. The song "LIMP" is about that.
My first time hearing this song was back in 1997. I was staying with my sister in her dorm room at the university she was attending and this video played on her tv. This became my new favorite song for sure! Fiona Apple is one of the best as well as one of the most underrated musicians of the 90s. She's super talented and actually inspired me to get into the music industry.

White girl angst was big in the 90s.
@@blackblake3658 lol it was
Fiona Apple is an absolute genius and honed talent and a master musician. She deserves more shine.
Another 90's song for Female Fridays would be #1 Crush by Garbage, it has a simular vibe to this, and their song Only Happy When It Rains. outstanding band!
Fiona Apple's rendition of the Beatles song "ACROSS THE UNIVERSE" ❤❤❤
For more of that sexy, dark vibe there are a couple of other 90s ladies you might enjoy, "Down By the Water" by PJ Harvey and "Walk This World" by Heather Nova. I mean, there are lots of others, but those are two that immediately sprang to mind. Also, "Down By the Water" was featured in a Leonardo DiCaprio film that you should definitely check out, "Basketball Diaries." It is so so good and based on a true story.
Love the Heather Nova suggestion
@@nadzee7101 I don't think I've seen anyone react to it. I think Jay would like the bassline a lot.
PJ Harvey has quietly had one of the best careers of any rock musician of the past thirty years, in my opinion. "Down by the Water" is great. Her grunge-adjacent songs like "Man-Size" and "50 Ft. Queenie" would be a good introduction as well.
Very unique artist, i love her. I think everyone had a crush on her in the 90s
She's killer.
The musical style reminds me of Macy Gray's music. Of course Fiona's voice is a good octave lower and the lyrics much darker.
Fionaaaa 🥰
Queen of rock of the 90s (along with PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, & Sheryl Crow)!! This is not even one of her best songs, but still very good.
This song takes me right back to my teenage years in the 90s - what a time to be alive! I loved the entire "Tidal" album by Fiona - please consider "Never Is A Promise" and "Limp" and "Not About Love" and "Sleep to Dream" - she has so many other gems to discover.
Good times.
Finally Fiona!!!! I’ve been waiting forever for you to discover her. She truly is one of a kind!
Thank you for finally giving us a Fiona reaction and I hope that we will get another one as fast as you can. 😊
Wow! Great song I've again a heard a million times. The video with it makes it even better. Mesmerizing production and vocal. "Wow" is right.
Next Friday: Fiona Apple "Fast As You Can / Veruca Salt "Seether / Tracy Bonham "Mother Mother" the original video where she's on the television while her mother cleans the room/ Imani Copola "Legend Of A Cowgirl"
The talent, vibes and singing abilities of Fionna is gift. She has many cutting lyrics sung with power and beauty - one of the best!
Her genius and importance is becoming impossible to overstate.
Fiona Apple is one of my favorite artists - so glad you guys are getting around to her! Along with the other songs people have suggested, I would highly recommend “Hot Knife.”
Ok guys, you’re in for a treat!! Fiona Apple is amazing and does beautifully crafted music that you wouldn’t believe it’s been made before. I highly recommend Paper Bag, Fast As You Can or O Sailor
Thank you for this one! I had completely forgotten about this song! My favorite by her is Sleep to Dream. Love it!
