She wrote this song after traveling to India, where she learned meditation and self reflection. She came to understand that things we tend in the West to think of as "bad" are often really there to teach and grow us spiritually and are worth being thankful for. Lovely song!
That song is actually saying she's thanking all things in her past that made her who she was at that time...she was thanking everything. She talked about it awhile back.
“How ‘bout how good it feels to finally forgive you.” Such a brilliant lyric, and gives a message of a complete recovery from the trauma expressed in her previous album.
@@peaceisnature As I interpret it, she’s moving on from the anger she’s held for so long - looking to move forward rather than get revenge for the past.
Dude, this brings back so many memories of friends (shipmates) when I was in the Navy back in the 90’s, doing those 6 month deployments jamming our songs down in the laundry room on the ship! We worked 10-14 hours at sea and all we had was music to keep us sane! Lol
Love this tune! I believe she wrote this sometime after a trip to India where she explored Indian spiritual culture and practice. Supposedly the trip to India made her analyze all the good things and success in her life, hence “Thank You”
During the pandemic she appeared on the Tonight Show to sing Ablaze, a song about her kids. Performing from home, her toddler interrupted. A lot. She held her daughter throughout and not only sang beautifully but paid as much attention to her as she could. No headphones (daughter took them) and still sounded perfect. She's just incredible.
She is an incredible vocalist, philosopher and poet. If you watch the movie Dogma, you will see her playing God! National pride moment… of the 4 artists you mentioned, Alanis, Celine and Shania are all Canucks! 🇨🇦♥️
This song from her is about how she felt after touring and promoting her album "Jagged Little Pill" for a year. She had achieved what people told her she needed to as a music artist, but didn't feel any happier because of it. She had been looking outside herself for happiness and validation which didn't help. She also spent a year in India which was a strong influence on her coming to terms with herself. This song is about learning through adversity and becoming more empathetic with herself and others.
One day my husband came home with this cassette of 'some new singer named Alanis Morissette". I was like, "WHO?". But, Holy man! When I first heard her song, "You Ought To Know" in '95 her voice and explosive lyrics captivated me. And, frankly, some of it's rawness was off putting until I immediately realized here was a singer who's painful relationship experiences were bleeding out onto the sheet music. Her healing journey can be followed in all of her songs. "Thank You", being one of them that tells fans she's working out her demons, found and given forgiveness to those who deeply hurt her. I contend that she's not in the spotlight as much now because she's finally found happiness. How beautiful. I absolutely love her music.
We need the bad time. When things are good we coast thru life. It's only when things go bad we stop to think. If you can find one positive thing, a lesson to make you a better person then you take your power back and that bad time? Well it isn't so bad after all. I got thru my teen yrs doing this. I still do it.
Another Canadian treasure. Interesting that the official video was not selected, though I get why. I live across the street from her high school. I believe she went on a spiritual journey to India.
Morissette was considered one of the biggest music stars in the world, and many fans anxiously awaited a follow-up album. During a trip to India, in 1997, Alanis wrote some songs, including "Thank U". In 1998
You guys already reacted to some of my favorites from Alanis Morissette but not this yet, "All I Really Want". That song is like the prequel to this song. Almost like she was crying out to find an answer and "Thank U" was written after a trip she made to India. Almost like she found an answer and wrote this song. I mean, that's what it feels like to me but I could be completely wrong. 🤷🏻♀
THIS is my favorite Alanis song!! LITERALLY changed me life, started me on my path in Eastern spirituality, a lot of introspection. It''s a masterpiece IMO. Thanks for doling it!!!
“Kind and Generous” by Natalie Merchant is another beautiful song that explores the themes of Gratitude. Jay and Amber, keep diving into Natalie Merchant’s solo career (and 10,000 Maniacs, as their lead singer) You’ll love her music more with each song. Enjoy!
Definitely Kind And Generous. So much great music from Natalie with the Maniacs and solo. Like The Weather, Don't Talk, These Are Days official videos. Beloved Wife, Seven Years and Motherland solo. She is still touring for her album Keep Your Courage which came out last year. Check out the Sister Tilly video.
this is my favorite song from her, what gets me the most is the line "how about unabashedly balling my eyes out" I have been through so much, the only relief i get is doing exactly that
I love seeing Jay in his happy place. I could see he didn't want to stop the song. Alanis has such a unique sound and like the band Rush, shows her musical genius with the lyrics. Let's hear Uninvited soon. You can thank me later.
I love singing this song... I used to sing her entire Jagged Little Pill album and knew it word for word lol. In my 20's, during the 90's, I lived 5 hrs away from family and really loved to drive. So I would take the weekend and make the trip, my favorite part of it was the drive lolol. People sing in the shower, i sing when i drive. ^_^
Loved how the drums were hard and sounded like a loop at the very beginning and as the song picks up steam the entire drum beat kicks in and c sounds like a live drummer. Dope !!!!
Alanis is so gifted, a true artist. Great song, she has a wonderful catalog. I do suggest "Hands Clean." Btw, "divinity" is a delicious white taffy candy.
I remember buying this song when it first came out. I was at a crowded airport and I put this on my portable Kenwood CD player with my headphones on and while the rest of the airport was rushing and fussing around while I was transported into my own little Zen happiness.
The lyrics to this song delivered by her amazing voice has always had more of an impact on me than any work of art in any category. Providence. It means so much. Embrace the pain in your life, you'll be a better person. This was a masterpiece of a song. A perfect work of art.
Alanis wrote this song after returning from a much needed break with a trip to India after the chaos of Jagged Little Pills enormous success which obviously up ended her whole life as she knew it. She loved that no one knew her there and the kind and generous people of India literally changed her life.
I love Alanis since my teen years, and til this day. What I love about her is that she keeps doing music about her current life. Having children, being adult on a collapsing world, and she talks about it on her last album. Really an artist that grows along with her audience.
This song is actually one of her best, in my opinion. The writing and vocals along with that soothing music has such an impact. It's such a freeing song, and it really is a lesson we all need to hear.
I love this song so, so much. The lyrics are so meaningful, and I try to live my life according to them. I just wish you had watched the official video.
I actually preferred Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie album to Jagged Little Pill and this was one of the best songs from it. There are 2 artists I have seen live whose voices fill an auditorium, with their power, Alanis and Billy Ocean
“That I would be good” from the same album is a masterpiece.

forgivness is the most powerful weapon a person can wield. or yield?
@@dieselfeesul4928 Oppenheimer would disagree.
Is she forgiving herself?

I personally preferred Supposed former infatuation junkie to Jagged little pill for this very reason.

India with her mother as well I think
And it was after the HUGE success of the Jagged Little Pill album. She took stock of her life. With a bunch of reflection.
- paraphrasing.
India's culture has changed a lot since the British made them quit burning widows at their husband's funerals.
Yeah India will make you appreciate a lot of things, like not having diarrhea.
@GrimrDirge very mature answer. India also has Hindu wisdom.

Not sure who else you have today but another Canadian songstress to listen to with a beautiful voice is Sarah McLachlan.

Very well said, Sir..... she certainly is, most assuredly.... I love her so 🥰
This song didn't click with me when I was younger and heard it, but decades later it hits really hard! Thank you, Rob Squad :)
Agreed! Angsty teenage me wanted more rockin’ F you Alanis and didnt appreciate it at the time 😂 But beautiful music was made post Jagged Little Pill!
