There were games against Brazil and Portugal where they were able to play more direct when the opportunity was available. Since winning the world cup they took the Pep tiki-taka system to an extreme and it has not worked out for them. So, though it's tough to admit Pep can have bad impacts on football. Giving him credit for the 343 when it's was Conte who took it from Gasperini and brought it to the Premier league or the recent City using Stone as CB, CM and CF who took it form Inzaghi after what Inter did in the Champions league is Bullshit. But when it’s 2 heavyweights going against each other, you have to use everything in your Arsenal to win. Best Examples are the 2 last WC winners. France and Argentina weren’t playing the best nor attractive football in the world but they were talented squads and played the game to their strengths. Tiki Taka isn’t for everyone. Plus most of the players in the team comprised of La Masia players which led to magical chemistry between the team. Germany did not win the WC just because Pep started coaching Bayern a year or two prior. German football was traditionally hard nosed stuff, rugged in some senses, get the ball in and challenge for it - Not necessarily the pretty stuff but still great to watch in its own way.

      1. De Bruyne > Bellingham
      2. Declan Rice > Bernardo Silva
      3. Sakaa > Rodrigo
      4. Harry Kane > Halaand

As a German fan since 2006, I think he has got a point although it seems like this video is clipped and I would like to see the entire interview. In my opinion Pep is one of the reasons but he is definitely not the only reason, in fact FIFA is a more important reason in my humble opinion because they changed rules of referees decision making because a) they don’t like every team mimicking Spain and b) only a couple teams similar to Spain dominating the soccer world, because it’s apparently not good for commercial reasons. Another big factor is the overhyped domestic political correctness in Germany as it makes everyone on the team worry more about things like diversity, races, LGBT etc. rather than sheer competence and thus lead to the loss of the good old German values and fighting spirits.

No but he threw a spanner in the works. There are other factors also, hopefully Nagelsmann has analysed it thoroughly and implemented an action plan to address the issues (eg number 9, fortifying the defence, reviving the old style of play which is a time-tested method).

He's talking BS. Germans' change in stye of play had very little to do with Pep. It had to do with the trouncing by the Brazilian team in the 2002 WC finals. Germany had nothing to offer. They just couldn't cope with the fluency and skill of Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Ronaldo.
Voeler was the head coach, and he was replaced by Klinsman, who initiated the new style of play for Germany in preparation for 2006, which they hosted. It was under the aegis of Joachim Low that Germany began to impose itself with steely resolve and fluency culminating in the historic win in Brazil and trouncing Brazil and Argentina on their way to victory. That style served Germany well. Remember the demographics that produced archetypal tall German player had changed. There were more immigrants of great talent like Boateng, Ozil and Khedira.
Pep only coached Bayern Munchen from 2013 a year ahead of WC 2014. Germany had long changed the style of play under Klinsman and Low.

Yes, ethnicity of players has a major influence on playing style. It's really hard to merge these different styles and use only their strengths to create something successful. They managed 2014, though. But success wil never be as consistent as before

jupps treble winning bayern which also made up the core of the WC winning squad matched up extremely well against possession based teams.
madrid and barca both got shat on by german teams in the CL semis that year because of their style. high press high tempo and being efficient with few touches and passes.
the pep comes in, sure he starts destroying league teams because they have lower quality.
but come big cl matches we lost to the exact style that jupps squad was playing.
time and time again we got beat on the counter or a high press turn over.
the same thing is happening at man city. they walk the league, but they struggle in europe at the top end against clinical counter teams in namely madrid and psg.
sure they won one. but when they've got access to any player they want, just like Chelsea did under Mourinhos first run you're bound to win it eventually.
put pep in a team without infinite money or messi and his style will make that team worse.
bayern during peps era could've won the league without a manager due to the amount of legends there at the time.
if they had not sacked jupp or even just focused on a cl specialist manager it would've been historic in terms of results.
but Bastian is right. peps bs has infected football for the worse in most cases. now that klopp is retired theres a real lack of that german geigenpress style that took over the world in 2012 to 2014

Germany’s problem isn’t their style of play, its their values, attitude and mentality on and off the pitch that has set the tone for their demise. The last 2 WC’s attests to that.

I totally agree with this ... The German team and Bayern Munich for that matter are at their best when they are a counter attacking team that exploits the mistakes in another teams possesion and being very efficent on those counterattack chances... The German teams from 2008 to 2016 were very strong counter attacking teams and very direct .. same with Bayern from around 2009 to 2013... And then again after Pepe and under Jupp and Flick
The Spanish system eventually broke down and became pointless side to side passing and few actual chances... (This is coming from a Spanish and Real Madrid fan)
Plus the quality of attacking midfielders that play through the center dropped off after the mid 2010s ane has lead to an age of wingers and wide attacks..

People need to understand… pep is killing football. I don’t even put pep in my top 10 best managers ever. You could’ve put a doughnut in charge or all the clubs he has manages and get the same results. He picks the best teams of the best leagues to go and coach. When he gets there he destroys creativity, controls players and stifles growth. You’ll see in the long run he is bad for football. I believe he is a pure narcissist. More of these stories will come out how he damages places but people won’t see it until he has left those places.

And in time systems were developed to counter short-pass football.

Germany won the world cup with players that were trained, formed and heavily influenced (as they themselves say) by Guardiola when he was at Bayern. After Guardiola left Bayern, Germany dipped.
