Nice review. Since this book was called Badlands, may I suggest another book you should read. Please read “Badlands” by CJ Box. It is the third book in the Cassie Dewell series.
I, too, don't like flashbacks. I have no idea why. I would much rather have all the older stuff together at the front of the book, then the main story is not constantly being interrupted.
I think flashbacks can be done well. Take the tv show Lost for example. However, I believe there are some rules when utilizing flashbacks. 1. Don't linger too long in the past. Make it a short flashback... or break up the flashback into multiple parts. 2. Relate the flashback to the main storyline in some way.

I hope Brian, you will do a review on Chris Carter books, in his books the Seriel killes are wickedly brilliant 😊
My first book by tgis author is the rosary girls ☺️
I think Book 6 is The Killing Room. That one might be the best in the series. At least tied with Rosary Girls
Nice❤
