Oh my God!! ,that Saab 93 is a real violin a Stradivarius!!! For me a real dream car come true!!thank you for sharing!!Greetings from an Argentine two stroke engines enthusiast!!!
Eric Calson, the guy who drove one of these to SAAB's rally championships said in an interview that a couple of times he reved these little guys up so far that they would reverse direction!! They may good power for a two cylinder two stroke motor. But, as it is right now, there will be no more SAABs of any kind as GM closes SAAM;s doors. What a cryin' shame.
@pencilneck22 I don't really know what you mean by "valves" because the only two-stroke engine I could think of using valves would be direct injected (huge 2-stroke diesels in ships for instance). I guess though these old motors run with carburators...
argh1989: Yeah, I forgot that they were threes. As for the "reverse direction", they way I get it, you can't float the valves, so if you rev them to high you can get to a point where they would come close to reversing direction. Apparently Carlson ran a huge amount of ignition advance and that is what did it. Now I have to say that I've never seen this happen "in color" so it could be an old wives tale for all I know but it has been in my knowledge bank for 20 years or so. Maybe a little longer.
ForRealBruh 01 i guess the Sonnet 2 was lighter so yes, but they was i plastic so. it was mostly these ordinary 2strokes that was used in rallye or on track. the 92 is only two cylinder, i guess copied from DKW, so thats dont sound as fun as this.
@Sunmilkcheerfan Look again closely! From about one minute of the video they race at full acceleration, neither is really any faster than the other. At the entrance of turn one the Elite driver backed off, so the 93 could overtake thus keeping space for that red roadster to pass. This is historic cars racing today they don't rist crashes and drive with much care and respect.
@19Fred92, he didn't "tell" me, I read it. He was doing an interview. That's all. OK? If it's bullshit that's his problem not mine. Just for the record, a two stroke SAAB doesn't have any poppet valves or a cam, they use the classic, for a two stroke, sleeve "valves" and those don't use cams. I'm familiar with 440 Chrysler's that run opposite (twin 440s in a yacht, one runs CC the other runs CCC) so I know all about that.
@argh1989: Let me try it this way. Forget valves, you are confusing yourself with what I said (they don't have any). As for the reversing. They ran the timing of the engine so close to TDC, to get extra power out of it, that IF they revved the engine too high, it could reverse direction. And that would be a very bad thing.
@pencilneck22 Basically, that's what I said. I don't understand why you are talking about timing valves when you already know this engine doesn't any. I'm pretty confused. ^^ What exactly reverses direction?
Hey I know it is ten years later, but the fact that two strokes don’t have valves means they can run backwards. What’s causes it is when they get started in the wrong direction, like putting it in first when rolling backwards to jump start. The Lanz Bulldog is a two stroke tractor that has no reverse gears, instead it turns the engine the other way round.
@@SgfGustafsson Getting the context is a little complicated, because these comments were made back when Google+ was around. So the thread structures were ripped apart since then. But the original comment stated: "Eric Calson, the guy who drove one of these to SAAB's rally championships said in an interview that a couple of times he reved these little guys up so far that they would reverse direction!!" That guy later explained it had something to do with advanced ignition timing. I know 2-strokes can run backwards, but a running engine in gear, suddenly reversing direction at 8000 rpm doesn't make sense to me. No matter what type of ignition you're using, in a racecar it will always be tuned for peak performance (high load and revs). So to advance ignition to the point of engine reversal (on purpose or not) it would do that while starting the engine or while idling, and would be undrivable in the correct direction right away. An engine at around maximum revs has way more inertia, so how should this be possible without happening at lower rev ranges first?
@@argh1989 Oh I see, yeah I remember how the comments used to work but now I can't even follow it. I agree with you, I don't think that any spark advance would ever even come close to sparking on bottom dead center nevermind before it.
@19Fred92, You'll have to go bitch at SAABs rally driver Erik Carlsson (19 victories in 92s, 93s and 96s) because that's what he said. I was just relaying it. If it's not true in your mind, OK. That's your right. But with a side sleeve motor, which the two strokes had, I believe it is possible.
It's a crankcase savaging two-stroke the intake port goes to the crankcase, so it's intaking below as it's on the compression stroke on top, when it fires it compresses below until the right port is uncovered by the piston and the compressed mix rushes around to the top simultaneously pushing through exhaust, into the exhaust ports it fires the piston down every time. If you set the ignition timing after Top Dead Center instead of the normal BTDC setting, it runs backward just as good, however if you weld the dog clutch for locking out the freewheel device (which only work one way) solid something some V4 people want you actually really get 3 or 4 depending on which transaxel you've got and what was reverse is 1 forward gear. Believe it or not! My 59 93B has been with me since 1974, I'd let go of my 70 Jaguar XKE roadster, hell just about anything, even my house, not the SAAB.
Love the sound of the old 2-stroke, sounds like rotary too
I was there and saw it run! But most importantly I heard it! It was deafening loud, so great!
Oh my God!! ,that Saab 93 is a real violin a Stradivarius!!! For me a real dream car come true!!thank you for sharing!!Greetings from an Argentine two stroke engines enthusiast!!!
The saab sounds like a angry wasp in a can
I miss two strokes :..(
I want this SAAB!! Great sound!
sounds like an angry mosquito
2-stroke = Musik + Love! :-)
2 of my most favourite cars!!!! Have a 1964 Saab 96 2 stroke rally car Appendix K !!!! Total lunacy!!!!
Lovely cars both of them but Two stroker hard to beat at the end of the day....
The sound really intimidating
såå underbart ljud! :D
That’s a PROPER engine sound! Not a ”designed sound” as in many modern performance cars.
it sounds like a snowmobile!

That' s a heavy metal song and not a noise.

Djevle musikk!!!
Never have I seen slower racing but boy does it sound good tho
my Saab 96 2 sroke Rally car!!!! Wow
2 wheels, 4 wheels, whatever. 2 strokes has tons of fun and power. 💪
little monster
Coooooool!!
OMFG!
Best car ever built! Aswell the 92 and 96!
sonnet 2t?

ALXDLRG its a 2 stoke engine.... it sounds faster than it is....
+simcaP60fan a 2 stroke is always fast!!!!!
if i was in a lambo and i heard that thing comin up on me id be scarred.
Sounds like a car going at: 200 mph
Is actually travelling at: 70 mph

Go Saaby..........
@pencilneck22 By "reverse direction" do you mean the back got loose? By the way these are three cylinder engines.

@Sunmilkcheerfan Looks like an Elite to me, too.
Hang on! Spyker from Holland has purchased Saab and, with a little luck,we´ll see some more caracterfull Saab creations in the future.
Oh man I wish...
@argh1989: Can't float the valves as it doesn't have any.
they dont have much of a powerband and no motorbrake at all its just rolls on.
The sound doesn't match with the speed!
what track?
I'd love to run one of these by the kids thumping their rap music.

Asmr for men
faster than Lotus Elite, well that wou7ldn't be too hard.
😕
it's faster because the Elite driver is very slow ! duh
