The recovery after a poor start was amazing. You hit all the turns just right and used the engine and brakes at optimum points on the track. I have recently completed (never really completely done) a 1960 Saab 93F for Vintage Racing in the U. S. It made its debut last September at the Put-In-Bay Road Races in Ohio. Fought off a few gremlins, and it really needs a good tune up, but it is very fun to drive. Look up Fart-hinder Racing.
*This is the best car video I've ever seen!!! - I started out in a '67 '96'' two-stroke Sport at the age of 14, on twisting and turning country gravel roads in Norway, talk about evoking sweet adrenaline filled memories!!! - I've driven a lot of different cars over the years (the latest 'roadrunner' I had was a Celica GTFour Turbo, but let me tell you, **_nothing_** gave the same feeling of **_driving_** as the Saab under full throttle!!!* *(Imagine if this pearl of a video was complemented with drone footage of those laps!!!) This i s a pure classic . . . .* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💓
Having owned a 1965 SAAB 96 (and a early production 1967 with 3 carburetors) I felt every turn in this video. Anyone that was never behind a two cycle powered SAAB is missing something. Fun is putting it mildly. In the winter it really gets amped up
Had a '60 93F as a senior at University of Florida. Thirty-seven horse, three speed with a GT exhaust. Great fun. On the drive home to Orlando, "raced" a Renault Dauphine for miles...door handle to door handle, both of us laughing our heads off, until with a toot and a wave he had to back off for his exit. One of my best UF memories! Wish I still had my little corn popper!
@@Pede711 Old car brake systems tend to lose pressure after a while, so you need to pump up the pressure before the desired braking point. Without pumping the brakes it will act as if without brake fluid just like the brakes have failed. I have 70's Suzuki ST20 back then and pumping the brakes before braking point just become my second nature.
@@Shadaole Thank you. I thought it had to be something like that, but I havent ever had to build up pressure on any of my classic cars (90 Peugeot 309 Rallycar and 69 Firebird "Sunshine"-car) so I wondered if it was a SAAB 2-stroke thing with that freewheeling-thingny they have in the transmission :-)
@@Pede711Wow, what a nice car you have. I don't really understand whether this could be because the braking system is not as good as other cars. But from my experience with some old Japanese cars (my Suzuki st20 and Daihatsu Hijet), it often has the same symptoms. Unlike old German cars which have reliable braking system. It is also possible that there is a very micro leak in the brake line. I think in the future I need to redone all my brake line to find out if its make a difference. Cheers mate
@@Shadaole Giving the car slight braking when entering the corner or cornering is a good way to plant the front tires and to get the rear end to "rotate" in my experience.
I would love to own a 2-stroke like this in So Cal, LA but sadly they are diamonds in the rough and would need major attention. My 9-5 Aero will have to do till trick for now. Thank you for the beautiful race footage, that orange paint is to die for.
Great recovery. Looked like air in the brake system or badly adjusted rear brake because I can understand the brake taps before the real braking coming up to a corner otherwise. That old Datsun was the only car in the class that put up a fight but it's difficult to beat the SAAB's high rpm.

From zero to hero: I had exactly one race like this, in my Datsun 1200, and the one reason I was able to go from last to first was the same reason that this SAAB driver did too! His car handled better than all the rest of them… :-)
Nice recovery :) the stomach must have been pure acid at the start tho. what's the reason for needing to pump the brakes in the straight? making sure he has pressure built up? Maybe that 2-stronke isn't a great compressor.
@Eastern yes, it does use premixed fuels, but some road cars used two tanks, one of gasoline, and a second with oil, and the oil was then fed into the gas and mixed
I can't believe what I'm seeing here that car is nowhere near it's limit and you are lifting your foot off the throttle for heavens sake.. keep that thrittle hard to the floor, if you want to lose speed, scrub it off or nose, that's what your left foot is for..that baby will out corner all that junk in front of you. Trouble is, your nerve is failing before the old 2T. It's a hell of a car ( I've one) but don't back off... it's ridiculous. check out how the swedes drive them....they dont know what a brake is. You have one of the best handling cars..
This is SAAB at its very best! Very skilled driver! My congratulations!🤓

Fart-hinder racing😂😂😂
It’s not the fart that kill it’s the smell. Old “Swenglish” saying😉 (Smäll = crash in Swedish)
Two stroke madness at its best!! Very nice Saab 96 and awesome driving skill!! Cheers Maestro!!!

Best in-car footage ever. Beats F1 hands down. And I'm not joking
I agree with you, the current F1 hybrid is beating the most.

What a beautiful interior. Especially for a racecar.
Beatiful driving. Stumping at the start gives You a lot of opportunity to pass others!
Great driving, that car is a real flying machine.
Under the helmet is a grinning racer. What a car and race.
Very cool! I never had the pleasure of driving a Saab, but I used to drive my grandfather's FIAT 127 when I would visit Italy. Great car. Great times!
Roll cage, gauges...and the friggin ignition switch key😊
The Saab sounds axactly like my DKW 1000s that I drove for 36 years. When a 2 stroke is good it's very good!
Yes. It’s the same engine.
That was racing at its finest, Saab I just love the madness of two stroke, great video, thanks.
The engine see,ed to be going stronger by the end of that session. Nice drive
And he still catches up to them ! 😁
One of the best footwork I've ever seen.
Beautifully sorted car. Well done!
Glorious 2 stroke sound!
Great job. Looks like a blast!
Brings back memories ❤
I thank the RUclips algorithm for this video.
I searched it...
me too. Incrrdible video!
ditto on the algorithm
I like the little left foot pumps on the brakes before the corner........been there before! 👍🇦🇺
Why is he doing that? What are the benefits, and what is there to loose if you dont ?

why dont these cars run on the Goodwood track? id love to build a racing saab and take it there :)
Nice engine sound ! And great video, too !
What a suprise car... OMG! Super nice car!
Really good rhythm in driving. Nice change to a smaller one-foot intermediate throttle.
I did the same thing once on the ice rink and it slipped!

That engine sounded awesome!

Is it the camera angle, or are the pedals in the middle of the car?
Can we see the build process or like maintenance

Fantastic
The sounds of a 50hp Evinrude being...shifted?! My brain is broken
0:58 touching the brake pedal while on the gas to warm the discs? Or to clean then surfaces?
It is for the gearshift, 2 strokes work better at high rpm.
SAAB Power!
that's a gear shifter i would not want to use lol
nothing like a lovely little 2 stroke at 8k rpm to better my mood

So, does it use pre-mixed oil/fuel in the tank? Never knew there were two stroke cars.
What the spec of the engine?

It looks like he's pumping them up slightly to get a firm pedal before he has to actually use them going into a corner.

Yes there is, but on these cars with free wheeka and everyting you can manage without it.
