    I'd like it if all creative geniuses were nice people, but it doesn't work that way. I encountered Joe Orton's writing without biographical context and was floored by the brilliance of his language. When I read biographical material, I concluded there was plenty to dislike about the man (besides his cruelty to the pathetic Kenneth Halliwell, who was hardly the author of Orton's career). But conflating Joe Orton's many personal shortcomings with his enormous talent is foolish.
