- In this exclusive scene from Episode 4 of Netflix's The Sandman, Dream (Tom Sturridge) goes to Hell to reclaim his stolen Helmet of Dreams from one of the demons of Lucifer Morningstar (Gwendoline Christie). The scene also features Matthew the Raven (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and Lucifer's assistant Mazikeen (Cassie Clare). Adapted from Neil Gaiman's seminal DC Comics series, The Sandman debuts on Netflix on August 5, 2022.

Gwendoline Christie literally has the sort of cherub-baby face angels were depicted with in so much Catholic art. A really cool and eerie effect
Lucifer was always often depicted as the most beautiful of Angels.

the casting for Dream looks so promising not just in the actor's look but his voice, intensity, movement and gravitas

One aspect wich is not talked about enough is Lucifers palace. The courtyard with the demons is the twisted image of Saint Peter square, and the Devil is standing in the same spot the pope makes his speeches. Really cool detail, props to the producers

She plays it like she knows she could trick anyone into doing what she wants, and make them think it was their idea to do so.

She's not manipulating him. He's playing along because it saves time. Dream does not fear hell. He reminds her why later on.
Lucifer is the ruler of hell, but dream is it's architect.
He may not fear Hell, but he definitely fears Lucifer.

Morpheus knows that Lucifer can destroy him in Hell; but killing Morpheus would gain nothing for Lucifer (another would take his place). Morpheus knows the only reason he is not attacked is because the temptation of a TRAPPED Morpheus, enhancing Hell's power, stays Lucifer's hand.
Thus Morpheus plays along hoping because it's his only option. Morpheus isn't powerful enough to simply take the helm; he has to wait for Lucifer to give it to him (by challenge or trickery).
...And she reminds him why he should...by leaving him its keys...
Her acting looks so spot on! She passes the feeling of superiority but at the same time doesn't look like the most powerful being of the universe.
The only way Lucifer could have been better cast is if 1970s David Bowie was available for the role, Gwendoline Christie nailed it
Had David Bowie been alive there would not even be an audition for the role.

Lucifer in its unadultered form (and far superior form) is a very stoic being, 15 billion years old that is well above human low humor and is UNAFFECTED BY THE ENDLESS (yet that is very important, he has no destiny, he does not die, he does not dream, he cannot be destroyed, he IS NOT ENSLAVED TO DESIRES, he does not despair, he cannot be confused)

@@jordanhunter3375 Lucifer Morningstar and Mazikeen both in this and on the Lucifer show come from the same comic book origins, but the adaptation is quite different (this one is much more faithful to the source, of course)

because he/she is in complete control. Morpheus knows it. In the comics he is very clear, had lucifer wished and morpheous would cease to exist. Even destiny IN HIS REALM is no match for lucifer or Michael.

@@lgnfve weird take. The characters always had subtle ways of displaying authority and lack of fear which translates well in the acting.
While I'd like CG or makeup on his eyes, the voice is spot on.

Tom Ellis at least carried the spirit of gaimens lucifer.
The funny thing about some people being angry about this casting decision is that she actually looks like Lucifer in the comic. He’s drawn to look very feminine.

Such a chilling moment to see Lucifer and Morpheus converse with each other. Literally on the edge of my seat during this moment.
That is almost ripped from the comic.
They could have made the devil somebody who would actually be intimidating like someone actually believable as the devil but na they went for Brean of Tarth 🤣
@@SidmanJam She’s classical, softly spoken, very tall and imposing with a wide strong frame. Actually works very well for a portrayal of Lucifer. Very intimidating indeed, being a man doesn’t always lead to being more intimidating or a better performance, Gwendoline did a stellar job.

The Ruler of Hell has a point-e.g., Sauron with his rings, Voldemort with his horcruxes. Darth Sidious with his apprentices, Pennywise with his fears, etc.
Sometimes you don't need tools to access your full potential, but you need it to weaken your ability so the damage and efforts can be minimized.

@@Beerbottles123 The Fox version is what Mike Carey (who wrote the Lucifer comic) originally envisioned before workshopping the concept further. That's why the first story has a kidnapping plot. Carey moved away from his initial concept as he developed Lucifer's motivations.

Gwendoline Christie here is an incredibly close match for how Lucifer was initially portrayed. The total Davie Bowie riff didn't happen until later. Also, Christie was cast with the expectation of playing the role in an androgynous manner over the course of the series - so make-up, hairstyle, etc, are going to change dramatically. Something underestimated by some commentators is that Christie is very tall, and has the ability to look imposing, icy. This will be important for Lucifer later on, and was probably a factor in casting.
The Bowie riff happened since day one. In Preludes & Nocturnes Lucifer looks like young Bowie on the cover of his first album.
Yes there is indeed need to be able to make Lucifer imposing and threatening.
Just this scene alone makes me excited to watch The Sandman

Both Lucifer and Dream looks timeless and familiar faced at the same time, impressive
here's hoping the story goes as far as we getting a sequel of Lucifer when he decides to shutdown hell and leave it cause he's tired, Morpheus, so very tired.
Pretty sure Netflix already made six seasons of that one, but the lead into that would be awesome.

@@JSTmore in fairness, there are now 2 separate comics that tell what Lucifer did after leaving Hell. Carey's Lucifer run, and Dan Watters'. Both are incredible, but don't fit with each other

An amazing thing they did with the lighting in this scene is to always have Lucifer Morningstar in a beam of light... it lets you know whose scene this is.
Samael isn't afraid of anything right? In the comics, even the Endless believes that he is the second most powerful being in the universe. There were incidents like him trapping the Death, Burning the book of Destiny and confronting a scared Dream who believed that he could be manipulated. The light bringer will be an interesting addition to the storyline.

@@audrionirks8881but they do have some degree of power over them. Lucifer was clearly wary of Dreams implied threat to cut them off from being able to dream after all.
When Lucifer approach the fire the light doesn't reflect on his/her face, that's a nice touch.
A nice touch, or bad CGI? Hard to say. Overall the set felt kind fake/low budget to me.
@@JorenMathews To be honest, it could be both ways. Indeed could be bad CGI but you don't know how fire and mundane things like it affects the Lord of hells, it even obey her commands.

I'm sure Swinton's portrayal in the movie was modeled after this scene in the comics.
That's the point. Angels doesn't have gender so usually in hard fictions they are portrayed in an androgynous way. Tilda and Gwen have the perfect facial features for these characters. You just need to hide the female body and you're done.

Her voice sounds playful, but in the dangerous kind of way, as if a predator humoring someone it won't take seriously.
And considering Morpheus is very much out classed by Lucifer that works perfectly
I'm so glad they skipped Tom Ellis as Lucifer here. Gwendolyn captures the essence of false diplomacy along with her quiet notes of pride in her speech; evil in it's subtlest form. Meanwhile, Tom Ellis is more of a misunderstood fallen angel with redeemable qualities; goodness in hiding. Lucifer at the very least should not be something fixable or broken, he should be simply evil.
Disagreed on the latter part. Anything and anyone is capable of change and redemption.

What's fun is that if you listen to the Audible audio drama series of THE SANDMAN, actor Michael Sheen plays Lucifer in the style of Bowie. It's a nice nod to both the man, and Gaiman's inspiration for the character while writing the comic.

This has to be my favorite show, they better give us more!
Was renewed for season 2 in 2022 october. They started filming in june 2023 the season 2, but the actors strike in 13 july interrupted the filming. Patience, at least the season 2 will be released in 2024 or 2025.
My favorite comics finally on the big screen. Love it!!!

Netflix Lucifer is based on comic called Lucifer which is a spinoff of Sandman comics.
@@luckystroke126 Netflix Lucifer is a very loose adaptation of the actual comic of the same name. The only thing they share is the obvious main celestials and Lux, Lux is a true piano bar and the characters have very different personalities (cruel one's at that), Hell is fire and brimstone of course now ruled by the Angels Remiel and Duma. The whole police and Chloe arc are made for the TV show and has nothing to do with the comic. Lucifer's relationship with Amenadiel is firmly based on hatred. Comic Lucifer is much much more powerful than his TV counterpart.

Don't forget, Lucifer was the most beautiful angel of the paradise (in Latin language it means literally "the light bearer"). It's absolutely plausible and intriguing to represent him/it/her as a graceful, charming woman dressed in white, noticing that it's the Devil just from the black wings and the palace.

Hes only really important in Seasons of Mist. If Preludes and Nocturnes didn't have to retain continuity with the rest of the DC Universe then they wouldn't have included at all.
I'm guessing they had to cut some things for time/budget. It's a shame but you'll never get everything in an adaptation, especially of something as big as Sandman.

They may show up later in the scene, but Azazel isn’t really required until A Season of Mists.

This scene is a little different than in the comics. There is no triumvirate and he sees Mazikeen in a cell before meeting Lucifer. But still looks great. Can't wait to see their battle.
