You don't need to be so textbook like in this interpretation... What Morpheus alkudes to is simple. All he is threatening is Lucifer's dream - of going back to Heaven one day
Dream of the Endless is also according to Sandman I is all incarnations of deities that represent Dream. I think one of his children does have the name of a minor dream deity but lorewise nor wrong
Well, the Anti-life is more than that. Is the living concept of predetermination, the absolute idea that there is no free will. And is also an equation that can destroy every bit of self in any who gets hit by it's knowledge. It's also the thing that turned Mobius the Antimonitor completely crazy (since his universe has no free will) and the thing Darkseid seeks the most.
Also, ironically, is the thing that Lucifer hates with all his soul. He has always tried to escape predestination but has always fail (except at the end of his comic line, of course). The funny thing here is that Lucifer uses it as a weapon against Dream because as much as he hates it... he believes in it. He has always struggle against but always failed to escape it and he has learned that he would never be able to win. It's like a twisted cosmic version of learned helplessness.
Some cosmology? As much as it is Gaiman's unique storytelling, it was also an IP he created for DC which was later merged as part of its 52 Worlds post-original Crisis. So it pretty much _was_ wholly DC cosmology at the time the show was made. Some retcons since have stripped the Endless lore and reduced them to basic gods.
This scene was mind blowing with the scale of how quickly they escalated it to best the other. Dream certainly knew he would most likely barely escape with his life, if he didn’t lead Satan on to stick with the focus of ‘force’ as their move, before jumping to the theoretical meaning of existence. Well played

Fun fact: As Lucifer is describing himself what he is. A wolf, A snake, a pestilence of life, a nova of cremation, the beast of judgement: anti - life darkness at the end of time.
Quite the opposite, that last line by dream was actually Lucifer. The "light bringer" was meant to represent hope and for Lucifer to defeat hope would be for him to admit defeat. So she just refuses to continue playing all together.
A battle of wits, intelligence and reality warping. One of the best battles between essentially gods I’ve ever seen. (Dream isn’t really a god nor is Lucifer but their powers put them on that scale to me) and I was extremely amazed. Instead of fighting with their abilities and their fists, they fought with their minds.
this is hands down the greatest fight scene i ever scene between too god it was soo clever and interesting it was like a battle of the minds i rewinded it twice to watch it ... that HOPE LIne that DREAM therew at her in the end was BEYOND EPIC and when lucifer decided for him not to leavae and the DREAM saying "WHAT kind of POWER would hell even have if no won can dream heaven ? wow what a line ....that got me speechless such a awesome scene mad props to the writers
you know if dream removes everybody of the dream and hope we would all be straight going to hell and lucifer would have to fight everybody to stay as ruler of hell. that's why Dreams threat was surreal to lucifer.
I will always love, love, love the way they changed this up from the comics. In the comics, it was just addressed to the gathered hordes of hell, but here, it is a very personal stab at Lucifer and Gwen absolutely SELLS it with her facial expressions. The shock, the anger, the despair...just flickering from one to the next when Dream twists that knife with his delivery of the famous line. The cheeky little bow without breaking eye contact and without lowering his head...Dream is often described as cold, cruel and arrogant, and they have managed to put all of that on brilliant display here in the space of a few seconds, the perfect example of "show, don't tell".
I love how much in abject denial Lucifer is about their situation. They're constantly and rather childishly dealing in absolutes when they know the universe doesn't run on them.
Just Managers at the best of titles go. CEO, Owner, CFO, and Board of Directors go to other factions that are in charge of keeping the show running... or this Manufacturing plant running.
I love that to escape bacteria, Dream seems to understand Lucifer's stradegy. And decides to become something bigger. Something you can't turn ill or kill. But what you can destroy- he is just seeing if Lucifer would be willing to do it. And Lucifer is. But at the end, when Dream says hope- something you can destroy or take away. Something everyone has. It is only until you youself don't believe in having it. To kill it is to say that the game has ended for both of them- that there is no hope for anyone left. And Lucifer can't do that to himself. (Nor to anyone in his realm- as that is the point of hell. To torture the souls that dream and hope to one day escape it.)
There was an answer to hope but Dream cornered Lucifer into being unable to say it. What beats hope is Judgement - hope crushing, freedom ending. Lucifer couldn't say that out loud because it would mean that God's judgement of Lucifer successfully crushed all of his hope at being loved again, so he conceded the battle rather than being forced to admit that.
“Well Lightbringer, it’s your move, what is it that kills hope?” She can’t say the answer because if she becomes reality, then she loses that small hope that one day she could return to heaven.
I don't get this take. If Lucifer says reality, then Lucifer becomes one with creation, is what I would take away from it. And since lucifer is the very symbol of separation from reality (the father of lies) Lucifer would quite litterally sieze to exist and return to (become one with) God. That's why Lucifer won't say it. Not because Lucifer hopes to return to heaven. Lucifer doesn't want to. Lucifer would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven.
@@LoreFriendlyMusic that’s a interesting take, the reason I still believe reality is the correct answer is the face she made when Morpheus brought up what if nobody could dream about heaven? I think that version of Lucifer, despite knowing what they did, still often dreams about being up in heaven again, maybe not as a servant of God but just being there. When somebody is in jail, even if they run the jail, they will often think about home. If she became reality, that would shatter all the hope she has of returning to heaven, and even for the Devil, that’s the one thing that she has left, the only thing. That’s at least how I look at it, and I see it as something truly special. The way the battle was fought and the way the battle was won. Morpheus, went with the universe and She went with the death with the universe, only thing would to be the concept of hope. ((It’s just my opinion, I watched that fight quite a few times and that’s all I got from it. Not trying to change your mind or saying your view is wrong.))
@@isaac15752 He is bound to hell. That is his current reality. I don't think reality really kills hope in the first place. Hope might not necessarily be at odds with it.
@@LoreFriendlyMusic In the Sandman continuity, Lucifer wants freedom. They want freedom from God's plan, freedom from Hell. They don't want to return to Heaven, they don't care about lies and damning humans. They want absolute freedom. And becoming something that destroys Hope to win the game would be to admit that their core desire, the very core of their being, cannot be fullfilled. That they can never hope to be free from the plan of thheir Father, everything is already set, they are just playing a part in an already written story. Which is something that Lucifer simply cannot accept, that they are too prideful to admit and afraid to even think about. Because it would undermine everything that they are. They most likely know what it is that kills Hope, they could do it, but in doing so they would be destroying themselves. That's why Lucifer does not respond and is forced to surrender, they could have won but the cost would have been too high, because during the game both Dream an d Lucifer are actually transforming and feeling the consequences of the creatures and concepts that they choose.
Perhaps, but the point is that Lucifer themselves have hope and to fight/defeat hope is to destroy the hope inside them. That is why Lucifer relents and why the line about those trapped in hell dreaming of heaven got to them, because they speak about Lucifer just as much as any other in hell.
Yet there will always be hope that the depression goes away their will always be hope that light will break through the darkness and rescue those imprisoned by it. Hope cannot be defeated except by that which Created it.
Depression is the despair about the fact that it should be better. There is no depression if there was no light to compare it to. And even the culmination of depression, its final symptom, süïcïde, is the hope for the pain to end. Which is why people with plans are relieved. The thing that kills hope could possibly be dystopia. No hope. Just misery, dystopia does not provide any light.
I actually preferred the graphic novel version...Dream is surrounded by the angry minions of hell. He utters the line about dreams in hell.. And the crowd immediately backs away and allows him safe passage
Hope can be beaten with despair but if lucifer decided to use that that's means he agreed he will never beat God and never obtained heaven So, magnificent
I have never seen a better representation of gods fighting. So much of media depicts gods with flashy moves, and brawling power. But what is physical confrontation? Just an exchange of energy between matter. gods can be depicted as so much more than that. And that is why i love this scene. It shows that they can become.
hell, the hopelessness at the end of life, the enteral prison of suffering, the one place hope can never touch, and I think at some level the Lightbringer knows that but would never admit to it, less despair takes them.
That's not quite true, though, is it? After all, Nada had hope that her Kai'ckul would rescue her. And, per her own words, that hope remained unabated after Dream's passing. Do you believe she is alone?
Gaiman's a genius. Even the choice of moves are in sync with the entity...lucifer choosing rabidness/ aggression (wolf), venom (serpent), decay (bacterium), destruction (nova) and nothingness vs. Dream's nobility (huntsman), glory (eagle), nurture/ nature (world), eternity (universe) and ultimately...hope. ❤❤❤
They wanted to do the Hellfire Club scene from the comic, but they didn't want to pay Squirrel Nut Zippers royalties for the only possible soundtrack for it.
So at my best guess. the rules are the challenger goes first. which puts them at a damage disadvantage but also they get to "Set the scale". which we see lucifer do at 1:10 where instead of being on single creature basis she goes to a more global / general concept of bacteria, and again at 1:33 where she goes to a cosmic scale which in turn allows dream to suggest counters of a planet, and a universe. It would seem each "Player" can chose to either attack, or Heal. during their turn. and whilst healing heals their "Physical body" it allows the opponent to take another attack. They do this until either one player "Defeats" the physical body or they cannot think of an appropriate counter to whatever move was previously played. So to give an example of a physical defeat which almost happens to dream at 2:40, One player could suggest they are a flower, the next player could then say they are "Winter".. Freezing the flower and thus freezing the other opponent. with the other opponent being unable to continue due to being litterally frozen. thus loosing. Where a mental defeat is what ultimately defeats lucifer since as the "Lightbringer" and knowing that Hope and dreams do infact rule over hell. gets stumped and ends up conceding.. Now I would take some assumptions but I would say that the game can only go to the "Scale" it did cause lucifer and dream are litterally gods pretty much. So they are not only able to imagine such concepts but understand what it would be like to physically be them. thus they are able to use those concepts in their attacks. Where as Dream seems confident in defeating the demon lord.. because the demonlord is inheriently not as powerful as dream. sooo the demon probably cant picture himself as "A nova" or "Antilife" like lucifer can. thus limiting the "Scale" that he can fight at. but then likewise since the demon would be the challenger(and thus able to set the overal power of attacks) dream wouldnt be allowed to go to that scale anyway. (So he was probably just confident in beating him mentally, where lucifer he knows is more intelligent and powerful) These rules also explain why dream dosnt just use "Hope" from the start as lucifer didnt change the scale of the fight to the "Metaphysical" level until she played "After life" thus allowing metaphysical concepts to be played by dream.
"You say I have no power here. Perhaps you speak truly. But to say dreams have no power in Hell. Tell me Lucifer Morningstar, what power would Hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of Heaven?" The BEST shut down line I've ever heard. Dream of the Endless is also according to Sandman I is all incarnations of deities that represent Dream. I think one of his children does have the name of a minor dream deity but lorewise nor wrong
Reminder: This series has some DC cosmology. Hope is an element of light. And Anti-life is the black void of all light.
Lol no
@@highlandusYes, it's DC
Well played

Dream: “I am Lucifer, king of hell”.
Lucifer: “Yeah, I’ll give you this one…”

48:35 first episode. The way he says "what" as well as the rest of the line. It's always stood out to me.
Also, in the comic the duel was directly between Dream and Choronzon, not Lucifer.
"True hope is swift and flies with swallow wings. Of Kings it makes Gods and meaner creatures Kings." - Shakespeare.
my favorite comment on hope comes from the comic fables. " never forget, hope fights for both sides."

Lucifers one shot at taking Heaven is Hope... Even Lucifer knew that there wasn't a trump card after that
There was an answer to hope but Dream cornered Lucifer into being unable to say it.

@@LoreFriendlyMusicno, if lucifer says reality, then he is bound to hell, cus that is his current reality
3:15 "What is it that kills hope?"
"I am chronic depression, eternal darkness unending"
Perhaps, but the point is that Lucifer themselves have hope and to fight/defeat hope is to destroy the hope inside them. That is why Lucifer relents and why the line about those trapped in hell dreaming of heaven got to them, because they speak about Lucifer just as much as any other in hell.
I am therapy and friendship
Yet there will always be hope that the depression goes away their will always be hope that light will break through the darkness and rescue those imprisoned by it. Hope cannot be defeated except by that which Created it.
That would leave Lucifer unable to endeavour.
That's true, but the plaza looks like vatican City. Quite the irony
Hope can be beaten with despair but if lucifer decided to use that that's means he agreed he will never beat God and never obtained heaven So, magnificent

(So he was probably just confident in beating him mentally, where lucifer he knows is more intelligent and powerful)
These rules also explain why dream dosnt just use "Hope" from the start as lucifer didnt change the scale of the fight to the "Metaphysical" level until she played "After life" thus allowing metaphysical concepts to be played by dream.
Hope is sometimes just a consolation we offer ourselves

How can that be? When Hope is one third of God?
@@isaac15752 What kills hope? Answer is Determination. Determination in being firm in your purpose and resoluteness regardless of the outcome. Determination erases the reason to even have hope. When you have that you dont need hope. Not needing something means it is nothing. You know what the worst thing in Pandora's box was? It wasn't the sorrows, destruction, wars, or plagues.
